I took my '03 CPO 325i to the dealer for occasional clunking noise from the rear before coming to a full stop. Usually does it when cold, however lately it happens even warmed up.
Anyways, I got a call from the SA, he said they tracked down the problem and it is a OUTPUT SHAFT FLANGE. He said this is not covered by the CPO warranty.
Is that considered tear/wear item? Or should I try a different dealer and see if they cover it?
This is the weird part. The car normally idles at 500-550 rpm with the shifter in DRIVE , which I think it's kinda low. But when I got the car back today I drove it for quite some time and all the time it idled at 750 rpm- perfect, there was no clunking noise when coming to a full stop or anything like that. That lasted for maybe for few hrs. , and now it's back on 550 idle and the clunking is back.
Do you think it has something to do with the transmission( which btw shifts perfect) and not with the flange?

I'm not positive but it seems that part is a part of your transmission.

I would take it to another dealer for a second opinion.

The flange that connects the diff to the halfshafts? Regardless, NO flanges are normal wear and tear.

That flange is covered by CPO. It's not a normal wear and tear item. It's a mechanical failure. There's a bulletin for it.

They probably cleared the adaptations for your vehicle and that's why it idled better for a while.

And fwiw, my car idles just above the 500 mark too, I'd put it at 600-650. It's 1/4 the way up from the 500 mark.
