Guys, in my 79 323i...
I have replaced the spark plugs and most of the fuel system and its still stalling.
I have a new used FD on the way. In the meantime:
Can you tell me where the ballest terminal is and how to check it?
I posted this on the email digest and someone said this its corrosion on the ballest terminal.. I dont know What the heck this is...

its connected to the distributer cap ... on my car at least. do you know what it looks like? if not it looks like a tiny coil with one wire coming out, if the wire is loose or corroded. it will stall you car and seem like its flooded out. keep in mind my engine is a 3.5 so it might be different on yours
good luck

Jim, thats called a capacitor or a condensor, and it prevents radio interference. Has nothing to do with running the car.
JJG, whoever said that must have been talking about the ballast resistor. Its hidden somewhere in the wire that supplys power to the coil. On a 4 cyl car its a few inches down in the wiring harness near the coil. Can't say where it is on a 6.

So its where the coil is on the 4 cylinder? Hmm I get to check this out on the 323i..Does anywhere know where the ballast resistor is on the m20s e21s????

Some distributors mount the points condenser externally, that's likely what's on the outside-with a broken wire on that it will not run.
