I was wondering if anyone knew if the oil level indicator would ever show "1/2 quart low". I read in the manual that the indictor will inform when it's 1 quart low but it made no mention of an intermediate level. With previous cars, I'd always keep the car at 100%, adding 1/4 quart or 1/2 quart when needed, but without a real dipstick, I have no way of knowing and do not want to overfill the engine.

Thanks for any information.

I added a half quart in that situation and when it updated, it still showed a half quart low. It will not say half quart low, but just show the bar half full on the cluster.

You don't need to add any oil as long as it is not lower than 1 quart from max. But if it gives you peace of mind, go ahead and do so.

Yes, I was a few bars low and put in 1/2 qt and now it's perfect.

At 3500 Miles my 335i had dropped two bars. I took it too the dealer and they added 1 QT at idle and stay the same. I asked them to add 1 more QT and it still did not go up. On the way home I rechecked it after driving it for a while and it showed full. I have heard from members that it is .5 QT per bar, so mine might be overfilled but now. Just noticed that I am showing 500 miles to oil service. Hmmm

overfilling can damage the engine much as underfilling.

I know but is show full and without a dip stick. I don't know if I can tell on the bar gauge. I think there is an other bar past full and I will check tomorrow. also mryakan I replied to you on the OEM wheel. Check them out and let my know what you think. Later

I posted about this in another thread:

- Changed the oil & filter myself on my lift, max 4 deg up angle on the garage floor
- Refilled with 6 qts, expected to add most of the 7th after checking the oil level.
- After starting and running for 5 min. the oil level indicator said it was full (at max)
- Did *NOT* add any part of the 7th qt.
- Drove the car 30+ miles, still said max full!
- Drove another 60 mi. and it finally indicated 3/4 way to max full, added 1/4 qt., now read max/full again.
I need to check the level again since my wife went on a 300 mi. trip but the car hasn't been driven again yet.
I've only put 6.25 qts. when it's supposed to hold 6.9 qts.

Update: After my wife's 300+ mi. trip and my driving the car for 30+ mi. to get the oil warm again the oil lever still shows max/full. So either the electronic oil level indicator is not completely accurate or all the oil does not get drained out even after 15+ min w/ the drain plug out....

Give me back the damn dipstick! People that are not concerned enough to check w/ a dipstick aren't going to be concerned enough to check it with the gauge!
