I have a 1992 318i automatic and every now and then the orange light with a cog in it comes on. If i pull over and turn the car off wait a few seconds and restart the light goes off and the trans runs fine. I have just changed the oil and filter hopeing this might be the problem, but it wasant. The light still comes on every now and then.
Anyone have any ideas please.:redspot

Use search... there have been a number of things that people have pointed out that could cause this. But the first thing you'll need to do is pull the code off the computer that tells you which fault tripped.

You need a code reader, I believe. A BMW mechanic did it for my 92 once and said based on the code that was being thrown, an upgraded computer chip would help because the original chip had tighter tolerances. I actually ordered the chip for $20 but never installed it (problem kind of went away on its own for the most part :P)
