im a nimcompoop
as i was closing my car this evening, i didnt realize it was on drive while i was trying to get the key out...
i finally pulled hard enough that it lodged out
now, it doesnt stay in, the car works, the key just won stay in the entire ride
is there anything i can do manually?
if not, will this be under warranty?
what should i tell the dealer? what if he tells me that it was obviously damaged manually?

If you have a decent relationship and attitude with your dealer, they may just take car of it for you. Tell them exactly what happened so they can repair it properly.

Do you have a little kid you can blame on it? Still doesn't fix it under warranty unless the SA is cool, but it could save face and make it look like something out of your control?

Just take it in a say the key won't say in, don't mention anything else. If they ask you if you forced it out, blame it on your wife.

You are much stronger than I am as I tried to do the same thing when I first had the car. I stopped the car tried to get the key out but it wouldn't come out. I gave it a few hardy tugs but it was a no-go. So thinking it was a problem I called BMW Assist. First thing they asked is the car in park? Embarrassingly no it wasn’t, put the car in park then amazedly was able to remove the key.

So after reading your post I am very glad that I wasn’t able to pull the key out.

I must say that was a spectacular move on your part. What do you do for an encore? I'll have to call my buddy over at bmw canbec and tell him to put the word out to all the dealers in the area.
i bought mine at laval lol
if i have to pay, is this expensive?
i hope theyll cover it for me, i have the car for only 2 weeks

Did you try another key? You obviously broke it...go down to the dealer and talk to a SA.

It is amazing how I can place the key fob in turn on the car, then turn it off, remove the key fob and turn on the car without having to put the fob back in there.

I would say fess up and tell them a legitimate excuse. Its pretty hard to remove the key if you blame it on a kid. Warranty will not cover that type of expense, but it is worth a try. Talk to your seller. The guy who sold you the car should be able to help you out.

Not had this problem and to be perfectly frank, only time I would have done this if I had been drinking too much.

I would go back to the dealership and fess up to what you did, but also add that this was never run through at vehicle hand over when you purchased the car. Explain about being new to this style of keyless operation and that this will be the first of many BMW's you will own and hope that they can help you out.

You wouldn't rip the key out in a traditional system...pleading ignorance with that is....ignorant.

Uh, some of us didn't order our cars with the comfort access.......

just take it to the dealer, and talk to them.....hopefully they'll fix it under warranty :dunno

Maybe you are right, however last time I checked a "Traditional" system did not eject the key when you push it in and release it. So the style of the BMW's fob system is new to a lot of people, hence the issue some people have with breaking the fob when pulling it out.

Pleading ignorant but admitting fault would be my course of action, and hope the dealer is feeling generous.

This isn't the Jetson's, one assumes you have some common sense...car is running don't try and pull the key out. You have to understand BMW doesn't want to pay for stupidity. The dealer usually has to explain why they replaced a part and send broken parts back to be looked at. I'm going to bet replacing the key housing isn't a quick fix. I'm sure you're dealer isn't going to want to eat the part and the labor.

the key slot is easy to change.

just tell the dealer that the key won't stay in, and they'll fix it. don't tell them you broke it unless you feel like paying for it.

Hey, since we are speaking of this already, does anyone know the R & I method of pulling the key slot out to change? same thing happened to me...the key wont stay in.

carefully and gently pry out the trim cover. then the key slot is held in by one or two screws. be carefull not to damage the ribbon cable that's plugged into it.

You know I can see how someone can get confused if they are not used to this type of system...

I'm sure glad I read this thread before picking up my new Bimmer..knowing me I probably would have done the same thing...
