View Full Version : Back from repair but sound is worse!!
2006 X3 - 10,000 KM ONLY.
Story- A few weeks ago I noticed a sound coming from the left side when I had my window down, every pothole or small bump in the road would trigger the famous ''bird chirping'' sound. Went to the dealer, could not find the problem because as everyone knows, when you bring your car in to fix a problem, its, never there when the guy sits in the car with you! So I go back home, a few days later the sound comes back. So I schedule a visit to change my oil and finally they heard what i heard during a test drive. My left rear shock needed to be replaced. So back again, get winter tires on, alignment and rear shock replaced. Get back in, drive 10 minutes to my place and as soon as I turn a corner and turn the radio down I here this AWFUL rubbing sound coming from the back. But I can clearly hear it from inside with the windows up. I'm sure people outside can hear it. The sound is like an old rusted wheel rubbing up against a metal rod or plate. It's clearly rotating and even when I come to a complete stop, I can still hear the sound ''rotating and coming to a stop a couple of seconds later. VERY WEIRD. So I end up turning back and head over to the dealer but now it'S 3pm and everyone is gone except a couple of administrators. It's Friday so I left my car there over the weekend to get checked on Monday, I'm not driving it in that condition.
What is the problem!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Thanks to any helpers out there.

A rotating noise after the vehicle has come to a stop?

Novajoe 11-10-2007, 09:58 PM so after you've come to a complete stop, the sound keeps going?
And the sound is for sure coming from the rear left wheel?
... got nothing...

not 100% sure it's from the left wheel, it seems to be from left to right! The whole freaggin back side!
riding around in a new 323i right now that they gave me for the weekend. I have a 1 month old and driving my X3 seemed too dangerous.

will do.
Novajoe 11-10-2007, 10:18 PM I'd say try throwing it in neutral while coming to a stop and see if the sound keeps up, but you're car is already in the shop...
It almost sounds like a differential problem, but it makes no sense that the sound would keep going after coming to a complete stop. Once stopped, theres really nothing in the rear moving.

I know, it's very strange. But how can it go from a simple shock replacement and winter tires to a poltergeist non stopping spinning sound!?!?!?!
somebody gots some splaning to do!

Well chances are they just didn't fix the problem in the first place. And when they put the winter tires on and replaced the strut it just made it more noticeable.
does the sound CLEARLY keep on for a few seconds or so after you've stopped? Because honestly that just doesn't make any sense to me if the sound is coming from the rear of the car...

110% sure it does. My wife was also in the car and she was the first one to notice the sound not stopping and she was sitting in the back with my son.

Well hopefully the guys at the shop can get the problem sorted out for you. Actually being there to hear the sound and witness the problem makes a big difference.

that's very true.
Thanks for your help and interest.
finally got it back today. I was told that a metal plate was interfering with my brake pad and that was the source of the sound. They did not see any damage to it. The sound is gone and it seems to be running fine. Was not able to get any more details because I did not speak to the rep directly. They brought my x3 to me at home which was nice, no traffic to worry about but i'm still kinda confused as to how this happened.
What metal plate could get loose in that area after a shock replacement????

They could have been talking about the dust shield. Still seems wierd that the sound would continue after the car is stopped though. Oh well. Its fixed and that's all that matters right?
c2autoinc 11-17-2007, 05:33 PM They probably messed something up when they were working on your car and felt too stupid to admit it to you.
