More pics! I am charging my battery on the good camera. Will have better pics later but she is very dirty so no big deal right now.

highboostingm3 11-10-2007, 12:14 AM Thanks guys! :buttrock
I am super stoked but there are a couple little items I need to square away.
1) She rubs a lot on bumps so I need to click up the COs just a bit and some 10mm spacers in the rear. Better suspension wouldn't hurt.
2) Need to align her ass up in a BIG way!
Just big ass tire and custom widebody typical stuff. :)
Other than that I am simply amazed! :redspot:buttrock:alright
bmw-97m3 11-10-2007, 12:23 AM what a teaser.....but still very nice!

camshaft 11-10-2007, 12:31 AM Awesome Cam, I'm really happy for you now that you have it running. With the way the camera keeps zooming in on the car as it drives away it looks like a typical 1/4 mile amateur recording where you expect the last shot to be the camera lifting up to show the ET.
Austin
xjeeper 11-10-2007, 12:31 AM Dude... WTF?!?!?!? I have never heard an e36 sound like that! That is siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.... it almost crackles like a ferrari raspy tubi style setup. My god cam, I literally lol'ed and backed up the video to hear it again and again. That sound is visceral man! Like tearing jeans..... And to think that was just steady state cruising at what seemed to be 3-4k rpms (very) part throttle. I cannot wait to hear it opened up and breathing.
Wow. Fukking wow.... that sound is inspirational.
turbosporttsi 11-10-2007, 12:37 AM Holy sht, dude. Can't wait to see it in person! Glad the wait is over.

:lol Yeah that was one of Tim's workers. I am just glad he got video and TIm was able to load it up so fast.
I was down at Speed Force since 12 noon and I just got back to my office in my M3. M5 is at the shop overnight. Need to work a little and catch up since I took half the day off.

I am so glad you said that! The guys at the shop were all laughing when I pulled up. We actually made another run after that coming the other way but he ran out of tape. Anyway...the guys were saying they never heard anything like it...that it sounds more like a Ferrari or F1 type car. We watched the video and they were telling me that in person it is 100 times better than that. I don't know man but I can tell you what...I am happy with it. :)
Holy sht, dude. Can't wait to see it in person! Glad the wait is over.
Can't wait to show you! I am glad the wait is over too. I have to get the wheels aligned badly though.

m3jasper 11-10-2007, 01:30 AM Sounds good man! Soooo happy for ya man! Enjoy her and break her in slowly...
el bob 11-10-2007, 01:31 AM Cam that is AWESOME!!! The best old school, hand alignment shop I know of up here in LA is Bear Frame and Wheel in Glendora. I think all the computerized alignment places can only do factory suspensions (what their computers are programmed for), but I could be mistaken.
Julz69 11-10-2007, 01:53 AM F*ck that sounds amazing. I can't wait to hear you get on that b*tch.
Oh stop posting and break her in by the end of this weekend, so come Monday you can up the boooost. And put up vids for us of course.
Congrats I have been watching your car since the beginning with its other setup and I must say it has evolved into something truly amazing. Wish I had a sick car like that.

Hell yeah! Thanks for your help with the belt issue Nick! :redspot
Sounds good man! Soooo happy for ya man! Enjoy her and break her in slowly...
Thanks! Ah hell no! I am doing load and then vacuum back and forth with different rpm ranges. I will have her broken in by Monday!
Wastegate spring is only 5psi for safety and my 60mm wastegate keeps it at 5psi solid!

hey thanks! Yeah I heard about that place. Takes 3 weeks to get an appointment they are so good. I will have to find one local. I think it is more the balancing of my tires that is all messed up. Maybe CCW never balanced them. That would make sense.
F*ck that sounds amazing. I can't wait to hear you get on that b*tch.

5mall5nail5 11-10-2007, 02:34 AM I am very happy for you Cameron - I know how long you've been waiting to get the car moving again. I also know the frustration and thus rage you inhibited during this whole process. Again, glad to see this thing rolling under its own power! Best of luck with it.

Thanks a ton for all of your help behind the scenes on AIM Jon! I feel pretty darn relieved right now. I can't wait to get her tuned up right on the dyno and take care of the suspension/alignment issues. Then it is on like Donkey Kong! :buttrock

Unfortunately he will not post numbers:(, just time slips. Very respectable, though.
SiGmA 11-10-2007, 03:46 AM Congrats Cameron!! Its been a long road, but I'm sure its worth it now! I can't wait to see the car again next year, and hopefully see it drive too! (Side note: Drag strip day around Bimmerfest weekend, so we can kill two birds with one trip to So-Cal??)
Keep up the good work, and good luck with her!!

Master tuner nearby who has 4 dynos (3 are Dyno Dynamics) will be tuning her. No numbers for you guys other than trap eventually.

Awesome news! I know you've been waiting a long time Cameron.
Regarding the giddy hysteria about how the car sounds, and not to rain on your parade Cameron, but it sounds like any turbo BMW that I've heard.
A Ferrari with Tubi exhausts sounds totally different. F1 cars sound totally different .. and so they should since they are NA and revving about 400% higher.
Again, fantastic news the car is getting there! Can't wait to see it get used in anger!
dakar>e36 11-10-2007, 05:22 AM AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it looks and sounds absolutely amazing, im sure it drives even better!! congradulations!
ps. will you pm the dyno sheet and numbers?? :naughty i promise to not leak them ;)

This is actually smart ,Take me for example Just because I dyno'ed 996whp
does not mean I use these settings at the track and I might never.I have traped 143mph in a 3400 pound car then you get people saying Thats not 996hp
So Cameron is doing the right thing and avoiding all the drama.

Very well said! I agree with Cam's decision not to release the dyno numbers. His project looks great and is well desearved for a person who has waited so long! Looks and sounds great Cam!

really, the only conflicts like this I can think of all stem around the ICS numbers. and amongst those... its only among a few extraordinary circumstances. 95% of the dyno numbers posted are accepted at face value, it is only when a certain combo winds up making much more than anyone else has been able to wring out that people start questioning.
I for one would love to see cams numbers on a dynodynamics dyno set to shootout mode. I dont think anyone will put up a stink about the numbers... unless the numbers are real high and the corresponding trap speed is (by comparison) low. I am dying to know how the knife edging, ceramic piston and combustion chamber coating, equal length mani, etc etc etc etc etc will manifest itself in the power curve. This combo has never been done before and we all can serve to learn from the build. :buttrock

The dumbest thing he could do is tell everyone the numbers...it will only start a huge debate that will most likely end up in a huge argument.
I have been there and even spent money to prove people wrong, but at the end of the day...people still hate and always have some sort of excuse. :eyecrazy
IMO, he's doing the right thing. Cam...keep it to yourself.

bimmeracer3 11-10-2007, 04:06 PM To add to the dyno argument, could you at least post the dyno with the AFRS and The Curve and just Photoshop out the numbers?
I would love to see the curve of that setup also, especially with that turbo.

I can't quote everyone so I want to say thanks for all the nice comments! You guys are like family to me. I have had the pleasure of meeting some of you in person, I hope to meet more some day! :buttrock
Thanks Kenny! :wave
Is this you in the pic below holding my head?

Sooo nice Im excited too I can not wait for her to get tuned.Remeber alot of long deacceleration will help seat rings.
This is actually smart ,Take me for example Just because I dyno'ed 996whp
does not mean I use these settings at the track and I might never.I have traped 143mph in a 3400 pound car then you get people saying Thats not 996hp
So Cameron is doing the right thing and avoiding all the drama.
Thanks a ton Ulysses! Yup, did a ton of decelleration last night and will continue to do so! :buttrock
Congrats on getting it running Cam, you deserve the "Man with the most patience award"
:)
Thank you for saying that! Tim at Speed Force has told me many times how much he appreciates my attitude and that he can't believe how cool I have been throughout all of this. He has a lot of other customers who cry over little mods because they don't want to pay up and they are taking too much time when it takes a week. It hasn't been easy but I don't like to stress too much so I try to avoid stress and just let things go until they work out sometimes. Otherwise I wouldn't live to 50.
Niiiice Cam :redspot :redspot :alright :alright :alright :evil2:devillook :buttrock :buttrock :buttrock :redspot
You da man! Now I have to learn to launch like you!
why would one person have 4 dynos when he can only use one at a time?whats his name or shop name that just sounds funny for one person to have 4 dynos. I am not saying he doesnt that just is a little weird but cool i guess.
All the guy does is tune. Anything from motor homes to sand buggies to street cars to whatever. Master tuner.
The Dyno Shop (http://www.thedynoshop.com/)
Looks and Sounds Awesome. Congrats Cameron.
Chris.
Thank you Chris! With your high perception of proper turbo system engineering, it will be interesting to get your take on her in person. I will give you a ride at Bimmerfest too! :)
:stickoutt
Laughter is good for the soul.....
That was a great gif buddy! Thanks! :lol
Very well said! I agree with Cam's decision not to release the dyno numbers. His project looks great and is well desearved for a person who has waited so long! Looks and sounds great Cam!
Thank you very much!
EXACTLY......!!
Cam just go out there and spank some ass and then they will know that the car is POWERFUL!!!!! thats how I do it go out there and pick fights with worthy opponents who will spread the word:buttrock
Thanks Pat! I will do exactly that!
You definitely know what it is like to be in that hot seat Dave. Thanks for that. There is no reason that I need to post dyno numbers.
I thought I posted in here last night, than when I went to watch the video again didnt see my post :confused. The car sounds amazing! congrats :buttrock .. MORE VIDS!! even just driving down the road in the day breakin her in.
Thanks! I have more video of the tuning from an in-car camera mount last night. :devillook
To add to the dyno argument, could you at least post the dyno with the AFRS and The Curve and just Photoshop out the numbers?
I would love to see the curve of that setup also, especially with that turbo.
I said that I would do that. No sweat bro.
.Tom. 11-10-2007, 06:20 PM :eyecrazy I cant wait to see this thing on wendsday:eyecrazy

i cant wait to get mine going, we will have to get all the local FI bmw's out for a late night duel:devillook
highboostingm3 11-10-2007, 06:31 PM I posted some extra pics on post #1.
Grey Phox 11-10-2007, 06:53 PM Damn! Can't get over that sound. Congrats on getting it up and running!
95RogueM3 11-10-2007, 07:24 PM I said it in the other thread, but Ill say it again:

CONGRATS!!!!
MrBlonde 11-10-2007, 07:30 PM I agree that dyno numbers are pointless. By now the mainstream consumer (read: you) are aware that dyno numbers vary from dyno type to dyno type .. and from dyno machine to dyno machine. Also that it is laughably easy to fudge the numbers for a dishonest operator.
For those who take their car to a drag strip, the raceweight and trap speed is all you need to know for a very accurate engine power number.
For those who bust a number in the dyno cell with a huge peak horsepower number, but then never again run that setup (less boost or what ever) yet still tout that once-in-a-lifetime dyno number I ask you to reconsider. It's that sort of thinking that the BMW FI community should have grow out of by now.
Schneller Bayer 11-10-2007, 07:55 PM Congratulations Cam!!! It's great to see your plans materialize, Can't wait for more:buttrock
dcvee 11-10-2007, 08:28 PM I don't see what the big deal is about numbers on a dyno. It's a dyno. It's a tool for tuning and comparative output. People get all worked up about dyno numbers. I don't understand why. Car's are built up for a reason. Sometimes it's to go fast in a straight line. Sometimes it's to bust big numbers on a dyno. Some are even built to turn left and right:D. Whatever the "builder" wants is cool with me.
I know another guy that didn't dyno after a build. Funny all the hell he caught.:devillook
Cam I hope your car does what YOU want it to do....and I'm glad you got it running.:buttrock

gboezio 11-10-2007, 08:47 PM Congrats, that sounded awesome, you waited long enough for this, you must be thrilled like a child.
You deserved it.
 That was funny! I will do a drive by their shop at WOT during business hours once the car is tuned with 30psi! :buttrock :buttrock :buttrock
That would be a bad place to blow a headgasket

My spring is solid at 5psi right now so I could see if I can race an e46 m3 and beat it with only 5psi and like no timing breaking her in while shifting at 5k. :)

It is totally custom but Speed Force can make another one if you are interested. $1800 including Accufab throttle body and custom fuel rail. $1900 polished.

Ulysses, I understand totally about finding the best compromise between all out power and reliability.
I guess what is misleading to some is when they look at drag strip results and then compare that to the advertised power number. For example in your car, ~141 MPH and 1,000 rwhp. That leads to most forum members assuming that you need 1,000 rwhp to run 141 MPH in an E36.
I hope you undertand what I'm getting at, no offence intended brother!

el bob 11-11-2007, 12:52 AM Daytime pics look great. I was down in San Diego picking up some E30 parts this morning and stopped by SFR. I chuckled a bit to myself when I saw your M5 was still sitting there, knowing you had probably been driving the M3 non-stop since after work yesterday. I can't wait to see it.
I got a chance to talk to Tim and wow, he is exactly like you described, really knowledgeable and business focused, but totally chill and down to earth. Patience seems to have paid off in this case. :)

Car is getting tuned on the dyno Tuesday. No plans for the M5...I like her stock. If I want to mod anything the money will go into the M3.
do you still have A/c?
The compressor and everything is in there except the lines and the belt. They did not have a chance to do the custom lines yet. Luckily it isn't scorching weather anymore and I drove around with a long sleeve shirt today with the window cracked and all good. I will have A/C though!

I will video the dyno Tuesday for sure!
Turbo is a 0.81 hot side pt76gts non BB non ported shroud.
Congrats Cam! You have the patience of a saint. Have fun and BE SAFE.
Oh and if you ever sell that car, and don't tell me first so I have a chance at outbidding the buyer, I will hunt you down and ........
Hypothetically? Absolutely!
Seriously? I will be burried in this car!

highboostingm3 11-11-2007, 09:31 PM I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I gotta say it, this car is absolutely beautiful from the body to the drivetrain, nothing is missed including paying it's proper homage to the e30 m3. Good luck with a great car.
That horse is always alive as far as I am concerned! I appreciate every compliment. Thank you so much for the massive compliments! :alright
As I said before, I absolutely understand this car is not for a majority of people (specifically the OEM/must have mouldings guys ;) ), so I am stoked when anyone appreciates her.

While I must admit, I prefer mouldings, with a car like yours it's very very easy to forgive such a small shortcoming :stickoutt The engine bay is a work of art, and I love the e30 m3 look.
Congrats Cam, it looks like your patience finally payed off :buttrock

Seriously man I personally don't really like (at all :help ) any of the popular widebody turbo E36 cars on the board as I think they are overdone or there is just too much stuff going on but yours, yours on the other hand, is just plain gorgeous. PM me your phone number and I will call you when we decide to set it up. I hope Ryan would like to be involved...he has been MIA for a long time.
Thanks a ton for the nice words. I will most definitely give you a ride in her some day soon. Vids will be coming very fast now that I have the software and know where to host them in decent resolution. Only thing is the current software makes a sound like your speakers are broken so I will keep working on that trying to find one that works flawlesly. I can't wait to get her back after the tune and do my first burnout in her! I need to look online for a suction cup camera mount so I can stick a camera on the side of the car looking down at the tire for my burnout. :buttrock

That is a GINORMOUS compliment from you bro! I so appreciate it! It took so much thought and work to pull off. I had started with a Zeemax kit and hated it, absolutely hated it. I had to change it and went through many variations in my head. Then when I figured it out (after a bit of research on the e30 m3), I contacted Jon Sibal for his massive artist talent. He came through and put what was in my head down on paper. I sent a few angle shots of the car in current widebody trim and we spoke on the phone many times to make it happen. He then sent me his artist renditions which I gave to the body shop guys. It made everything a piece of cake for them! Thank you Jon Sibal!
In the big thread I will show pictures of what she looked like before I ripped off nearly 50% of the widebody and started over.

bimmeracer3 11-14-2007, 01:22 AM Couple of quick question
First, for the strip, what kind of tire setup are you going to run?
how do you think your wide rears will affect your cars performance?
Although I am pretty sure this has been beating to death (and I have searched and cannot find anything), what made you choose that motor? IIRC, your car is a 97 M3 which would mean it would come with a S52. I am just wondering what made you swap motors and go with the M50NV.

1) For the strip I will get some 15" rims and run slicks that are approved by MrBlonde to fit under the stock bodywork so I can be on the street car list. I want to run skinnies up front as well...basically the same setup as Mike R.
2) I believe that there might be a change in the steering around corners but I have the backspacing as deep as they can go (in fact too deep, need to add little spacers to the rears) so it's not like most of the tire is outside of the stock footprint area. Use Vic Sias's car for example. The guy owns the autocross in his widebody M3. link (http://www.siastuning.com/)
3) I chose the motor because of the hype at the time. Lots of guys (especially ones not posting publically but I found out) were blowing head gaskets left and right with built s50 and s52 motors at 550+whp because the cylinder walls are so thin in between cylinders and also a waterjacket or two. So since the m50nv has 84mm bore the thickness is nice in between and some guys don't like vanos because they fail at times. Truth is after the build I realized the motor I really like is the m52 because it has the 84mm crank plus the same 84mm bore = extra displacement needed yet nice thickness so you don't blow head gaskets as easily. The bonus is it comes with vanos and you get a cool OBDII valve cover. The s52 I sold...one thing that is nice about the non-M motors is they are much cheaper than the M motors. So you can sell your M motor and purchase the cheaper non-M to build up for MOPOWA! But what do I know...Mike R. ran the first 9 with an M50NV head. :dunno
Want more!!!!! Awesome stuff man. Looks so clean.-Chris

I'll see what I can do. It might all come down to who gets traction because his engine blows mine away. Will be fun regardless of the outcome but I bet he whoops my ass.

Cam what did you do to the head on this motor? If you're willing to let me know, I'm curious as to how high you plan to rev this beast, and what you've done to the head + valvetrain - it seems like an NV motor would be better suited to running 7500rpm than a VANOS one....:shifty

Car is not on dyno yet. They have sand cars which had priority over my car so she is waiting but they hope to get her started today.
The good news is that I spoke with the manager at The Dyno Shop and mentioned to him that all the hard work will be done creating the first map and a race map with just some added timing/fuel in the higher KPA shouldn't be that big of deal. He absolutely agreed and said it would be no problem.
So I won't have to wait for another dyno day to have the race map tuned! :redspot I will have 25-30psi on 110 octane to video this weekend! :eek2

What is "our" cam? I don't have the same cam as you, nor the same turbo. When you see the dyno you will see the difference in the curve.

All the different motors have different cams and the power band greatly depends on the type of turbo. A turbo like mine should pull horsepower all the way to redline without falling. Possibly same with torque. Your GT35R is different where it has awesome mid-range but will fall off up top. You probaboly don't feel that though because it still has so much power.

Exactly! I said it has has awesome mid-range! Insane turbo and I might get one to swap for road racing. Hell, that is what I had purchased and ready to go in the box before I sold my last turbo system when I decided to go stupid with the car. That is the best all-around street turbo IMO.

Thanks! I have been busy but I will start working on the big thread where I will tell the story from start to present about the car. So far most of the car has exceeded my expectations. The widebody and the engine/turbo build definitely have. Yes, before it was widebody it sat there for about 5 months doing nothing so I collected the pieces and brought it all down south for the big build to begin.

You mean what is in it now? Or what was at Danzio? I had a new GT35R that I was going to use and was thinking of sticking with the turbo system I had before except with a built s52...then I changed my mind, sold my Supra and a whole bunch of craziness happened. I am constructing a full thread telling the entire story about the car from when I bought her with pictures and video. Anyway, it now has a pt76gts turbo.

Good point, but I wonder what boost response would be on x turbocharger (Say a 61 trim - T3 T61 / 60-1 / SC61) with Twin Vanos, tempting to even try a hand at a non M Twin Vanos motor just to see. Speaking of cost though, as you said, it is unfortunetly so true, someone has / had? a N/V M50 for $100.00 (Block) :devillook

Yeah I was basically starting at the same level no matter what motor I chose because I would be building, boring and stroking anyway. So it saved me money to sell my s52, start with a cheaper motor and build from there. I have a friend doing the same thing with an S50 but I talked him into an m52 as the base (which are still cheap motors). Bummer about the m50 is you have to change the crank to stroke more displacement.

Awesome news!, you must be losing your mind at this point, sooooo close to the end but not quite there yet. Can't wait to see that curve make a sharp northern swing at about 3500, I HATE that I will never know the horsepower figure, but I understand. Good luck.

highboostingm3 11-17-2007, 12:22 PM But since this IS the FI forum, numbers (or trap speeds) mean a lot then.
I will see if the 1/8th mile is open this Friday night. Might do it just to see what 20psi traps.

Your right trap speeds and et time i would post because that is how fast you went. But what i meant was because a person, lets say has 500hp doesnt mean his car cant trap as fast as a 600hp car. But what i think people are talking about with Cam not posting numbers is his power numbers not trap numbers... am i right?

Yeah they want dyno numbers. Not happening.

Are you going to post both your trap and race weight? That would be a good way of providing rwhp #s without actually posting the number and dealing with the BS.
Excidium28 11-17-2007, 02:44 PM Ok so if no dyno sheets, than a video goin sideways at 70mph on the street is a must. :buttrock

if that vid was WOT, and in second gear...that lack of spinning at that speed tells me that hes got too much traction to pull that off :eyecrazy

Its gonna be 3rd gear for him ...second is cake
eurotekm3 11-17-2007, 03:46 PM ......come on we need whp/wtq numbers!!....who cares what other people think about your dyno...just ignore them. :)

as much as i agree with you i think this is a hopeless battle haha
lughed 11-17-2007, 07:10 PM when i finish my e30 335 combobulation i might not even get it dyno'd, i rather just get it corner weighted.. By the way Cam? How wide is your car now with the flared fenders.
smashed99cbr 11-17-2007, 08:25 PM that thing is scary... i think i might have just wet my pants...

Benny is right Dragan. It is weird but I have never driven a car this fast that hooks. I get full traction with the combination of 315 drag radials and a 2.79 gear. I started in 1st gear in that video and the main pull was only second gear. See how long those gears are? Personally I love it. I love having traction. I did the slippety slide thing for years in my Supra so this is a very nice change. Tire slip just makes you slower and more out of control anyway. :buttrock
In-car video of a crazy 4th gear freeway pull coming soon guys! The car was all over the road, it was pretty scary. That is the fault of my bad alignment/tire balance issues which I will sort out ASAP.

Its not so much the dyno as when you go to the track with the hp numbers people think you should run 7's.You know how a few people are.Take me for example I push my car on the dyno very hard.
I made 996whp.That does not mean that is what I run at the track I want to know what it is good to and stay under.I have been 26-27 psi and the car can go to 35psi.so there is room to play.
STICK TO YOUR GUNS CAM...but hurry to the track:D
(Im sure on day the number will be revealed)
Oh yea have I said you wide tire guys suck:lol;)
