Took my Z in for Inspection I last night. Told them my rain sensing wipers were not working. They called me back this evening to tell me they needed to replace the windshield to fix the rain sensor and it would be late next week before they could get it back to me.

I'm just wondering, has anybody else had this kind of experience? This is my first experience with this dealer. Not sure if I am being BSed.

Yep. The sensor is attached to the windshield. If the sensor fails, they need to order a new windshield.

A coworker of mine had her Z4 windsheild replaced under warranty 2 weeks before the warranty expired because of this problem...

Why would they BS you about a repair that is covered under warranty? :confused

Yesss just had mine windshield replaced by the dealer for the same thing. Its the best way to do it as the sensor and the windshield assembly works better than trying to glue an new sensor on the old windshield. Look at it this way you get nice clean glass and new seals.

Thanks to each of you! I feel better now. I guess I thought they had damaged the car somehow and needed time to get it fixed. Hey, that car is my baby; I was worried about it.

Thanks again!

Just curious, how you know the rain sensor broke?
It didn't wipe the windshield fast enough?

I noticed that my right wiper squeeks when wiping the windshield even though it's wet enough.

Try changing your wiper inserts, maybe. It is covered under your maintenance warranty, so next time you take your car in for an oil change, request that they change the wiper inserts.

Skim - the wipers would not come on at all in the intermittent mode when it was raining. The variable part worked with a speed change if in the slow mode. Two separate controls - speed and rain sensor.

Kelli - not sure what the wipers have to do making the wipers start when it starts raining. The manual says you can leave the wiper control in the intermittent mode and the wipers will start on sensing rain and stop when the rain stops.

I was replying to skim's post about his right side wiper squeaking. My post had nothing to do with the rain sensing wipers.

If you stopped engine, then you need to reactivate wipers at next engine start. It seems true for BMW and Mercedes, however Lexus acts differently.

Thanks! That's important info for when I get it back. Probably saved me much frustration!

Closing the story - windshield replaced and rain sensing now works at no charge. BTW, my Z has just over 14,000 miles. No hassel at all from the dealer.
