I have always been a fan of standalones, but I am really impressed with the things that have been accomplished with chip tuning. I want to learn more about it and figure out how it works. I tried reading techno's thread on dme tuning, but alot of the software code and terms were way above my knowledge level. What kind of books should I look at to learn more about chip tuning. I am taking matlab next semester, will that help? Thanks guys.

shit what we need is a free editor, like ones found in every other automotive community
The threads/info/instructions techno has already posted are about as close as you're going to get, I think.

if you want a "free editor" you can use tunerpro. Same thing used in many of those "other communities".

:rofl (at the class, not at you)
The Matlab you will be learning will not teach you how to use the control systems in Matlab, it will teach you how to do basic graphing and rudimentary coding. Truthfully, you will learn Matlab over the course of the next few years, as each class will essentially require you to do something new in it. It's not until ME3015 you will really start to learn the control system dynamics anyway.
Additionally, given the very closed nature of current BMW tuning, to really get into it, you need to understand machine code, something they really don't ever teach, unless you take Mechatronics.
This isn't to say, however, that you could not learn it by yourself. I'm just saying, don't expect your current studies to help you much.
How's Tech treating you, by the by?
