My stereo now runs non stop. Even when the key's out of the ignition. It started working funny about a month ago when my stereo would cut out when I used my blinkers then come back on before the blinkers went off.

About this time my digital clock flashed on and off irregularly when the key was out. But now the clock stays on all the time and so does the stereo.

What the hell is going on?

had this exact problem about two weeks ago. ruined my brand new bosch battery.

its more than likely your hazard switch. try wiggling it and see what happens. If it IS this, pull it out, crack it open and just go over all the pins to make sure they arent shorting each other out inside.

Let us know how you go :)

Took the hazard switch fuse out this morning and that solved the problem. Thanks guys. I'll pull the switch out when I get a chance in the next couple of days and maybe clean the connectors or get a new one. Are they expensive?

Not really in australia. They seem to last. From memory, my stealer hazard switch had to be imported from germany, but its lasted a solid 10 years now
without dieing. A hint dr Z, when you next put it in, if you dont mind having it hanging out like an eye out of a socket, then thats what you should do. Adelaide weather gets pertty hot, and these things don't like the heat at all. so let it ventiliate.

Oh crap, I think I did something stupid. I took the hazard switch out but I put the new one in without disconnecting the battery. I got a terrible noise from it and now my blinker leaver isn't working properly.

I'm hoping it's something simple.
Little Help?

:helpOk, the whole indicator/ Washer lever has no effect when the hazard switch is off. When it's on I get a buzzing noise and the left blinkers work but the right ones don't. The washers don't work all but the high beam lights work all the time.

I know it must be an electical problem but where should I start? Am I looking at a new blinker leaver?

Help!:help

You probably just blew the fuse. Even if the fuse looks good - wiggle it around. Did you put a brand new switch in? The switches are such a poor design. It's amazing what the switch can effect from an electrical standpoint.

Thanks Rob I was freakin out there for a minute but I pulled the steering column facia off and found the relay that was causing the bussing noise. Here are some pics of it. I think It's pretty safe to say it's blown.

:stickoutt

I went out and bought some screw drivers and a shifting spanner I needed which is why I never disconnected the battery in the first place.

Did you take a look at the fuses under the hood though?

The last time I had that funny buzzing sound it was the h switch that was causing it and the fuse under the hood would blow. I never had to replace the relay in the column.

You know when you can turn a light switch to just the right spot and cause it to make an electrical snapping sound? It's almost as if that was what my h. switch was doing and it blows the fuse.

You may have already checked the fuses - let us know.

Rob

PS: the hazard switch is such a pain in the ass. I try not to even look at mine let alone use the damn thing :rolleyes

Yeah, totally. The fuse was the first thing that I looked at. I wasn't too hopeful though cause I changed all the fuses about 2 months ago.

With the column panel off it was pretty easy to find the buzzing relay. First chance I get I'm gonna shove the new one in! This financial setback is gonna put off the rust removal I'm saving for.

Hazard light switch.

And, Dr.Z that's not a relay, its either a buzzer or a flasher. (there are no relays in the steering coulmn) The fact that is was buzzing points to it being the buzzer :shifty although that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't your problem.

Yeah I often don't know the real names for the things I'm playing around with on my car. I called it a relay because it looks like the relays in the fusebox, same shape teeth and all.

Anyway, I pulled the cover off the thing and it has a circut board with connectors and a kind of reel of copper wire, like a stitch reel or for the fishers out there one like on their rods. Do you think its a buzzer? Parts of that were fried too so I got the new one and it buzzes too. So I tried a used indicator leaver and had the same problems. Next thing is another hazard switch. Hope that works!

But I'm working insane hours atm so it might be a couple of weeks before I get to it.

F*cking Hazard switch!!!!!!!

It was very hot yesterday and i thought I was lucky that my hazard switch hadn't died yet but nooooo, it popped out while i was driving and then didn't go back in again. I jammed it in with some paper just for the time being.

Today my indicators stopped working, the fuse had blown. In fact, both the indicators and hazard fuses had blown. I put a new indicator one in and left the hazards one out.

I ended up pulling out the switch and taking it apart, jamming the thing in the "off" position permanently. Unfortunately, when i put in the new hazards fuse, with the car off, the stereo and clock where on... So I wiggled it and then it sparked and smoke came out!!!!

I pulled the switch out again and I am going to leave it out until i find a replacement.. I'm really not sure where to get one though.
