I have the sports package, and it doesn't fold down; I think the cold weather package gives you access to the trunk but not totally fold the seats down.

The cold weather package has the fold down seats and the ski bag pass through.

It was an option from what I understand and non folding seats is standard unless specified otherwise.

Only standard on the vert if I am not mistaken. Other cars it is a standalone option or bundled with the cold weather package in US.

I was surprised that my first E46 sedan it not have a fold down seat. It is standard now on the coupe.

I have a 328xi and I had to order the cold weather package to get the fold down seat...you think when you're buying a BMW you wouldn't have to order a package to get an option thats standard on 99% of the WORLDS cars

Is it really standard on most cars? (I'm asking, I don't know...) Thinking back to all of the cars I have become familiar with, only wagons / minivans have had fold down back seats, and one of our Ford Taurus's when I was a kid. Things might have changed over the years though.

I haven't used my fold-down back seat, but will very soon when I need to take a large painting to be repaired. Worth it IMHO.

Agree. Seems like most vehicles have fold down seats for the occasional large item to fit.

You really won't miss it that much unless you have the convertible. I had a the 318ti hacthback and that feature was standard and essential on it.

I think the OP does miss it, otherwise he probably wouldn't have posted! :)

I'm with the OP, really wish mine had them.

It still doesn't make sense to me why it is standard on the Coupe but not Sedan. Seems like an odd option to differentiate based on # of doors.

Really based on trunk size and overall storage space and accessibility. e.g. to put my 4 winter tires to take tem for installation I could only fit 2 in the trunk and 2 in the back seats, now imagine I had a coupe, how would I get the tires in the back seats!!! Not an easy task, thus the standard fold downs. In the Sedan, unless you carry long items on a regular basis, you won't need the fold down since the back seats are very accessible. Just my opinion on the reasoning behind this.

If the fold down seats are standard on the coupe, and headlight washers are standard on the coupe, then what comes in the cold weather package on the coupe? Just the heated seats?? this makes no sense to me since the cold weather package is more expensive than the heated seats.

also comes with the Ski through w/bag :stickoutt. How much more expensive is it than the heated seats alone?

From BMWUSA.com:

335i Coupe
Cold Weather Package - $750

3-stage heated front seats (includes heated side bolsters)
Split fold-down through-load rear seats and ski bag
Retractable, high-intensity headlight washers335i Sedan
Cold Weather Package - $1000

3-stage heated front seats (includes heated side bolsters)
Split fold-down through-load rear seats and ski bag
Retractable, high-intensity headlight washersLooks the same, no?

Must be some nuance that I am missing, because on the 335i Coupe standard features list, it shows "Split fold-down rear seats" as standard.

The reason for the cost difference is like you said, the folding seats are standard in the coupe, where they aren't in the sedan. The cold weather package adds the pass through ski bad only for the rear seats in the coupe, the seats fold regardless.

Head light washers are not standard on the coupe. I think the cold weather package adds a pass-through behind the armrest and the ski bag to the coupe. It adds the above plus folding seats to the sedan.

Seems pretty goofy to me as well. Is it really that much harder to just put the fold down seats in all the cars? If someone doesn't want it, then they can just NOT fold the seats down. But, the converse doesn't work. I want the fold down seats, but I can't do anything about it. Weird.

They cost more and some don't want to pay for them. Would be nice if BMW threw them in for free, but they are not Santa :D.

But, how much more, really? You get them in Toyota's and Honda's without even asking. You think BMW owners are MORE sensitive to price than those who buy economy cars? No matter, I still love the car. I can't fault it. I just have to find a better way to pack dead bodies in the trunk. :)

Pretty much all the cars on the dealers lot here have the cold weather package, fortunately.

I use the fold down seats all the time. Very handy for the golf clubs.

And I love the heated seats (did I say that already?)

$1000 - Cold Weather Package

* 3-stage heated front seats (includes heated side bolsters)
* Split fold-down through-load rear seats and ski bag
* Retractable, high-intensity headlight washers

$475 - Fold Down Rear Seats w/Ski Bag

Through-the trunk loading system with 2:1 split-folding lockable rear seats and ski bag allows clean and secure transport of up to four pairs of skis and ski poles. When not extended for use, the ski bag can be stored in the seat, and the center armrest can be left down for use, or folded up to create a third seat.

So for the extra $525, you get heated seats and headlight washers.

Oh well, still, it should have been standard...

feel weird for not having a fold down seat car, is there a cheap way to convert it from non-fold down to fold down?

Sledgehammer?

Seriously, though, it looks to me like it's just the seat-backs and locking mechanism. I bet you could unbolt those suckers and figure something out. What might be difficult is making sure the seatbelts function properly and the seat-backs stay in place in the event of accident.
