View Full Version : Rear Climate Control screwy on my 540
fragzem 11-08-2007, 08:04 PM Even with the heat at 90 degrees, that rear vent blows cold. What gives?
And in the summer with a/c on, it will still blow cold.. and as a bonus, water spurts out of it...
Ideas, gents?

DarthMaul 11-08-2007, 08:42 PM if they are anything like the E34 rear vents....they ONLY blow cold air
of course now i have to go check mine...i forgot whether there was a temp control on them or not.

Ah...you got the BMW individual misting system - a nice upgrade for sure.
I'll check mine and see what it does - never heard anyone complain during the winter though. Stay tuned.
fragzem 11-08-2007, 09:49 PM yah man its got summer mist.. hmmm
but its nasty coz it gurgles and crap too..
i never have anyone in the back of the car... so.. i dunno if its always been doing this or not
scottycs 11-08-2007, 09:55 PM Mine has a red/blue know like the front.
fragzem 11-09-2007, 12:38 AM yah mine doesnt have a temp. adjust
e39dream 11-09-2007, 01:34 AM mine has a temp adjuster on there. If it's blowing out water your ac coil drain is clogged- a fun project for you to put off until spring. :)

Beat me to it....
BTW, I guess I have the winter package on my car, it has headlight washers, heated seats, I think it even has a seperate window washer resevoir for winter washer fluid.... yah know, the yellow de-icer kind.... at least I think thats what its for all I know is I have 2 window washer fluid resevoirs one of which has the blue kind, the other is empty cuz I havnt bought any de-icer fluid yet.....

If your rear ctr console vent does NOT have air temp controls...then it is like the older generation BMWs that have this vent. It only blows fresh air from the outside, or "conditioned" air (when the AC is activated).
During the winter months you should close the vent (unless you have the air temp dial which you can adjust accordingly)...it will help in getting the interior of the car up to the temps you set on the HVAC dial because you won't have extra cold air coming into the cabin (similar to having a window cracked open).
The rear passengers receive their heat from the floor vents under the front seats. If they get too warm, the rear ctr vent can be opened (by rear passengers) to help regulate a comfortable climate for themselves without the driver having to change or shut off the heating system to accomodate the rear passengers.
Below is a diagram of BMW's air distribution system...remember that there is always the concept of "stratified" air distribution where the driver can have cooled air blown toward them to help keep them alert on long journeys, while the passengers can stay nice and toasty warm...or have a limited capacity to regulate air flow & type for their rear cabin accomodations without having to disturb the driver:

I have the winter package on mine too. The smaller reservoir is for a sort of BMW concentrated soap solution which get mixed with the normal washer fluid in the bigger reservoir. 1 liter (quart) is about 7 bux at the dealer. I suggest you stick with that. Every 5th time you will spray the windows, that soap will be mixed with the washer fluid and the headlights will be cleaned as well. And trust me it works great.

Wow that is odd, my 99 has temp adjust. I believe that they also have ducts under the seats. You can always close the top ducts and the ones under the seats will blow hot air.
My 626 only had the ducts under the seats, with the front blowing, it might be okay
Another thought it, why would it blow cold without ac on???
Qsilver7 11-09-2007, 03:06 PM Wow...why would it blow cold without ac on???
Because fresh air from outside blows thru that vent when the AC isn't on...take note of the morning temps for the east coast...I believe the morning low for Long Island NY today was 35 degrees (F)...so if fresh air from outside was blowing thru that vent this morning...it would be COLD...without the AC being on. :D
fragzem 11-09-2007, 08:07 PM well it all makes a bit more sense now
i dont think the ac system is totally clogged as it also drips under the car some... but oh well
i can have fun with that and the aux fan next spring
ezbmr 11-09-2007, 08:54 PM Awwww, such memories, I owned a Nissan Maxima for about a week, turned out that it had a salvaged title and the ac didn't work, but it was cold out, so you would hit the ac and it would feel like it was on, and no hessitation. I lost 250 dollars, but gave the car back
