View Full Version : What kind of MPG? jrhaile 11-08-2007, 12:53 PM I'm getting some crappy MPG out of my 77 320i. Maybe getting 300 miles per tank and putting in 14 gallons or so.. is this normal? wayfast 11-08-2007, 01:02 PM 20-25 mpg is about average Layne 11-08-2007, 01:06 PM Is the 2.0 noticably worse than the 1.8? I used to get 30 mpg (1.8) but I knew people with the same car that got 18 and never figured out why. peperry 11-08-2007, 01:07 PM I get 20MPG even with driving the hell out of my car every day. On the highway I usually get around 25MPG. jimdemonic 11-08-2007, 01:09 PM I get 13mpg highway.... then again I also have carbed 3.5 jrcook320 11-08-2007, 01:23 PM I get between 20-25 mixed city, hwy beating the crap out of mine on a 2.0L 230 hp turbo motor. winstontj 11-08-2007, 01:32 PM you said 77... I assume it's carb'd? What carb/jetts? Cam? How do you drive? Any fuel injected 1.8 should get in the neighborhood of 30mpg but an out of tune carb'd 2.0L will be lucky to get 20mpg. Was it better then got worse or has it always been this way and you just want better? jrcook320 11-08-2007, 01:39 PM US e21's all used Bosch K-jetronic mechanical fuel injection. blitzed310 11-08-2007, 01:50 PM I get about 20 on avg, but I drive the piss out of them when I do. gabmwdrvr 11-08-2007, 02:59 PM I have been getting about 26-27mpg, mixed driving, 1.8L DrewDude320i 11-08-2007, 03:05 PM I get 13mpg highway.... then again I also have carbed 3.5 lol, that's no fun. I bet the small gas tank doesn't help much with that either. jrhaile 11-08-2007, 03:33 PM humm sounds like it's normal... I don't drive hard at all simply because it can't be done :rofl Maybe I'll look into selling this and getting an E30 318is. They seem to get better mileage.. rocket859 11-08-2007, 03:34 PM 20-30 MPG here o.o And thats beating the SNOT out of the little bugger. I dont know why, but she loves revving high. wayfast 11-08-2007, 04:14 PM james, don't leave us so soon :( dustbunny007 11-08-2007, 04:59 PM if i keep it 65 and under i can go between 400-500 miles on a tank.. if i drive over 65 (which i frequently do) it will barely get to 300 miles and i need a fill up BoomerDJ 11-08-2007, 08:39 PM damn something is not right on my car i am lucky if i get 220 miles out of a tank i drive with the pedal down all the time in the city of course i did mess with the fuel air mixture myself, tunned it by ear. i get about 18-20 mpg city 320btp 11-08-2007, 08:55 PM i got about an extra 2-3 mpg after i got a new 02 sensor. im about at 26mpg mixed ATLBimmerkang88 11-08-2007, 09:06 PM speaking of 02 sensor, i cant get that crap loose on my car, it's like it welded in there. OLD MAN 11-08-2007, 09:45 PM I average 25 with my LEAD FOOT! :D 320btp 11-08-2007, 09:53 PM speaking of 02 sensor, i cant get that crap loose on my car, it's like it welded in there. you need to give it a good bath in wd40. mine wouldn't come off either until it saturated and soaked into all the little cracks. ATLBimmerkang88 11-08-2007, 10:10 PM you need to give it a good bath in wd40. mine wouldn't come off either until it saturated and soaked into all the little cracks. ok. 320 bimmer 11-08-2007, 10:30 PM i get 22-27, depending on my week. every day i drive it to hell an back on the back roads. but sometimes i get behind a complete asshole who wont pull over and there aren't long enough straits for me to get by! yeah, around 300 miles a tank, sometimes more jimdemonic 11-08-2007, 10:31 PM lol, that's no fun. I bet the small gas tank doesn't help much with that either. Oh yeah its fun. even with stopping for gas I still get their the fastest:lol MattE21 11-08-2007, 11:59 PM just filled up tonight. 267 miles on 10.3 gallons of gas. im no mathmatician, but that looks like close to 25-26mpg to me. :dunno JTFormula 11-09-2007, 06:14 PM My 77 with the auto got 25mpg when we went to the Bavauto show and shine two years ago. Actually, it gets 23-25 on the highway all the time and around 18-20 around town. Thats just normal. I have a vintage road test for these cars from 77 and they said 24 mpg for auto and 26 mpg for manual. You think 300 miles to a tank full is bad when you put in 14 gallons, try the same miles and having to put in 23-24 gallons! Thats my Hemi Ram 4x4 that I drive everyday. Gas companies love me right now at $2.79 for plus (89 octane). goinstrong 11-09-2007, 06:37 PM I'm at 25+ with a VERY heavy foot and 220,000 miles on it...30+ straight freeway driving in 5th gear... Don't give up yet; it is probably something simple if the car runs well. Tim jagclarke 11-09-2007, 07:00 PM i get from 30-48mpg depending how i drive, 1.8L carbed engine. 45 get when crusing from about 70-80mph and 30's for town driving. its 5 speed. doesnt seem to loose much mpg at high crusing speeds at 90 320 bimmer 11-09-2007, 09:08 PM You think 300 miles to a tank full is bad when you put in 14 gallons, try the same miles and having to put in 23-24 gallons! Thats my Hemi Ram 4x4 that I drive everyday. Gas companies love me right now at $2.79 for plus (89 octane). haha, you don't know the meaning of bad gas milage! my truck has two 17 gal tanks, i can go through both in 7 days!:mad my bimmer is heaven compared to that. yes, thats right, 34 gallons in 7 days, now thats crappy gas milage EDIT- oh and it takes 91 octane or it knocks, and i can't get rid of it, so like 3:40-3:60 a gal JTFormula 11-13-2007, 12:09 PM That does suck - I had to deliver two cars to MA and ME with our company truck towing a 42' trailer. Loaded I got 7.5 mpg. Now that sucks! At least I got 13 when I was unloaded. My buddy was on tour with his band and they didn't even do the last show because of the cost of gas to go from Kansas to New Mexico, they really wouldn't have made enough money to make it worth the exta 24 hours of round trip driving plus hotel. He figured out at $2.75 a gallon when they left a month ago and last time they filled up, they paid $3.49 for regular in a E350 van towing a 20' enclosed trailer full of equipment. Gas mileage sucked too! jagclarke 11-13-2007, 06:05 PM u think u have it bad in uk cost eqivilent of $8 per gallon 320 bimmer 11-13-2007, 08:07 PM oh yeah, i forgot about that :( thats pretty bad, i have some uncles and family who live in england. gas prices there are through the roof! blitzed310 11-13-2007, 08:09 PM u think u have it bad in uk cost eqivilent of $8 per gallon Pfft I'd take your transportation system any day and gladly pay the $8/gal. to never sit in traffic again and go ANYWHERE on a subway. 320 bimmer 11-13-2007, 08:12 PM yeah, british transportation is pretty amazing. actually, european transportation on a whole is really really good. jagclarke 11-14-2007, 05:35 PM lol you oviously have differnt idea most people think uk transport system is poor. trains are crouded and overprised to go about 100miles by train you are talking about $60, bus service is ok but slow as there are many stops aboout $20 for 100miles. roads are often very busy and blocked up with trafic. there are good roads for fun driving though lots of bends and little traffic. in uk driving is expensive but public transport is even more expensive. our subways or as we call it underground is only in the capital london, its price is ok but alot of people are scarred to use it as alot of attackings go on and risk of teorist attacks as has been targeted in past. underground is also run down track is worn so very bumpy ect. if you go to france germany italy ect you will find it much nicer new high speed trains that arnt very expensive. i gess fuel prices kind of balence out as things are nearer in genral in uk, cruse control is pritty usless tho as so many junctions and corners. i think we get payied more in uk also but everything costs alot more. everything that is priced in $ works out so cheap good when importing car parts from us. JTFormula 11-15-2007, 12:18 PM u think u have it bad in uk cost eqivilent of $8 per gallon I was thinking about that when I sold a 1963 Ford Fairlane to a guy in the UK. Look for this running around over there: http://www.futureclassicsnj.com/Cars/fairlanedside.jpg http://www.futureclassicsnj.com/Cars/fairlaneeng2.jpg jrhaile 11-15-2007, 12:51 PM james, don't leave us so soon :( Might have too.. this gets worse gas mileage then my M5... I went 270 miles on 14.8 gallons :eyecrazy AlaskaBimmer 11-16-2007, 05:01 AM My 323i baur gets about 17 on a good day on the highway, sometimes I get 200 miles to a tank, but then again it's frankensteined eta motor tuned for power and not economy.. my 320i however gets realy bad milagae 12-15 in town, and I can't figure out why. the car is properly tuned passes emissions, the fuel brether issue was fixed, no leaky lines, ne cap, rotor, points, plugs, i'm becoming stumped....The only thing I can think of is my points aren't dwelled correctly...I don't know... My M3 gets about 16 in town, worse now that I use the autostart all the time after work...getting in a warm car sure is nice. jagclarke 11-16-2007, 08:57 AM il try but although uk is small there are alot of roads and cars here population is about 70 million so id gess there are around 50million cars 320iAman 11-19-2007, 02:08 AM I get about 30 mpg depending on city or highway driving Cheers!!!!!!!!!!! |
