Hello everyone!!

Dent Fest 2004 is just 3 days away! I hope you all are as excited about it as we are. I just wanted to ht on a few points so as to limit confusion on Saturday.

- There will be NO ALCOHOL available or consumed at the event. Also, NO burnouts, either at the event or on the roads near the the event. This also applies to taking your pals car out for a test drive. If you want to go beat on someones car, go somewhere far away from the event and have your fun. We will not be responsible for you acting like a jackass, but we will ask you to leave the event.

- You are responsible for your guests. What your guests do is a direct reflection of you. Please ask them to act accordingly.

- We expect everyone to leave the attitudes at home. Come out and have a great time. The forcast is for clouds, but don't let a slightly gray day bum you out.

- If you have any questions, comments, or need anything at the event, come see Chris, Lisa, or me and we'll do anything we can to help out. We will have name tags on so you'll be able to pick us out of a crowd. The 3 of us are the only spokespersons for the event.

- Auto Assetts will be working hard on getting cars on and off the dyno. Please try to be available at least 1 hour before your scheduled dyno time. Auto Assetts will also be offering day of show discounts on detailing products, day of show sales, and day of sale orders. If you think there is something you might want, please ask them and they'll go to work for you.

- Come out and have a great time. Rain or shine, we're going to have a great time!

- Lunch will be available for $5.00 per person. You will receive a wrist band to show that you have paid for lunch.

- Please bring pocket change for the Red Cross. With each donation you will receive a goodie bag from Bridgestone as well as a raffle ticket. Raffle prizes have been donated by Carbon Fiber Solutions, Understeer.com, Apexcone.com, Dent Solutions, Mpact Motorsports, Cobalt Friction, and others.

We look forward to seeing evryone on saturday morning.

I am coming in from Indy, and I wanted to know if there is a BMW dealership near the Dent Fest Dyno meet ?
I bought some clear corners for the front from Importvision and put them on yesterday, and they fit like CRAP !! I should say they don't fit!!
I was wondering if anyone could check and see if there is a local dealer and if they have the front clear corners for my '97 M3 sedan ?!?

The ones from Importvision.com are horrible! I have huge gaps between the fender and light, and they only have one notch on the clip to hold in. One side doesn't even reach the clip !!

The local BMW dealers here don't stock the clear corner lights, had you let me know a few hours earlier I could have had them VOR a pair... sorry :(

I remember seeing a complete set of clears on the shelf at Auto Assetts. However, I do not know if they are for the 2 or 4 door. Might be worth a quick email to Chip.Vance@autoassetts.com Tel him that you're coming down for Dent Fest. Or, have Agap pick some up on the other side of the bridge.

Not to sound rude at all but myself and all the other Employees @ Auto Assets would love for this event to turn out sucessful as hell, but I think I speak for all of the other employees when I say we are a little in the Dark about who is going to be helping and who Isn't. Sorry that Chip has left you guys in the dark a bit. Chris, Lisa, Aaron, and I have been doing 99% of the planning. We want to bring AA a packaged event that is basically going to run itself. We've talked to Chip and have worked to address his concerns and comments, but it really has been our event to run. Last years event was run in basically the same manner and was a huge success. We are sure that everyone at AA will have just as much fun as we will, without the stress of being more than gracious hosts. Everyone on our end has been working hard to keep our hosts at Auto Assets from doing much more than hosting the event. That will allow the staff to do a bang up job in the shop and the showroom. We have asked all of the participants to come see us, not AA staff, if there are issues. In turn, only 4 of us will have to interact with Chip and the staff if a problem arises.

I hope this makes sense to you. We want to make sure Auto Assets is not out of the loop, but rather a partner in the event. I;ll be at AA at 9a on Saturday. If you have questions, come find me. You should already know my car, as it's sitting in your back room. Also, Justin is an old friend, he knows hw to track me down.

I just wanted to take a second and announce another door prize to go in the Red Cross raffle. BF member Rich D. has been kind enough to offer 4 tickets to any Cleveland Indians home game this season. Hey Brian I didnt Meet you @ the lazy Chameleon last Saturday did I? Me and Justin were there acting like fools, as usual.

Great, I guess I am just malinformed as to what is happening. I am just so used to the VW days and I really want to see this day be great. So I will be there doing everthing I can to make the event a more pleasureable experience. I thank all four of you for all your hard work and dedicantion in advance because I'm sure this event will soon be remembered.

Auto Assets is a full service facility. They are mainly a Porsche and VW shop, but take care of all european makes. They also have a very nice race shop, a body shop, and are the new headquarters of PAP (Porsche Audi Parts), one of the biggest Porsche parts business. THe entire facility is top notch. I think you'll all be impressed with the shop, the staff, and the cars they prepare.

His mother dated a mutual friend (who is old enough to be our father, so don't get any ideas :) ). Anyway, Justin is a great kid. I'll be looking forward to seeing you both on Saturday. It couldn't have been a better day outside for the event. Chris and Brian you did a great job in picking the loacation and setting up the event thanks again... Auto Assets was a great place. I think I still have a smile on my face after I heard the numbers from the GTS:D

I am SO tired, but what a great day! Thanks to everyone that came out... especially those who drove in from West Virgina, Indy, Pennsylvania, Michigan and even Canada. It was really great finally meeting some a lot of non-local BF members in person :)

Anyone that didn't come out: you missed an awesome event. The array of cars that showed up was really nice. There were plenty of modded E36 M3s, two M6s, lots of Z3s and a few E46 M3s. The day started out with a croud around the dyno to watch a pair of Vipers churn out 400rwhp each, followed up a much more low key looking new VW Bug putting 279whp. The dyno techs worked their way through 24 cars today, ending with Lisa's SCed 318ti putting down 190rwhp and 165ft/lbs.

Man, I wish I could have gone up for the event. More pics please!!!

Chris did they ever the printer working or saving the data from the Dyno runs? Just curious...We had to take off before that problem/dely was fixed...

Actually they didn't manage to get the printer working. They're planning on printing them Monday or ASAP and mailing the pages to everyone. I'll keep you posted if I hear an ETA on those.

Dent fest and Dyno day (and rear shock washer day as Chip liked to add :) ) was a huge success thanks to all of you who came and spent part of their day with us. Auto Assetts set a new one day dyno record with 24 cars on the rollers. Heck, even after they were standing around drinking an end of the day beer, they still insisted on getting a few more cars on the dyno, including my M3 (245 SAE at the wheels on a 3rd gear pull...that means the corrected HP is roughly 305-310 with stock headers and cats. The dyno operators quote with a big grin on his face after the first pull "this one runs" But, enough about me). Auto Assets was a wonderful host and we sure hope to do more events with them in the future. Thanks to Lisa for (wo)maning the lunch and raffle table, a big thanks to Aaron and Renee for spending their day taking photos and quickly getting them up for all to see, and a special thanks to the guys crawling under cars and strapping them down all day. We also need to thank Ed and Eric Claeys from Dent Solutions for coming out and doing their thing. If anyone didn't get a chance to have work done, Dent Solutions will offer a Dent Fest discount for the next 30 days. PS, when the tent was torn down yesterday, someone made off with all of the unclaimed raffle prizes. If anyone knows what happened to them, please let me know. Everything was in a small box on top of my large Bridgestone box. We are missing the following: 2 Porsche Motorsport Tshirts (1 XL and 1 Lrg), 1 Lrg Porsche 996 Tshirt, 1 XL Cobalt Friction shirt, Dent Solutions and Apexcone gift certificates. Please help us find this stuff so we can get it to the raffle winners. This is the only dark spot of the day. A reward will be made for the safe return of this stuff.

No cai, no exhaust, no software, no hfm, and no cams!!!! This car has been such a rough time for me and my friends @ Auto Assets but I think after that everyone had a big bright smile on their face, maybe it was all worth it. On behalf of the AA team I want to thank everyone who showed up, and especially want to thank everyone who helped make this day possible

I assume you meant 228 rwhp? If so, how on earth did you make 228 rwhp on a stock 1995 M3? I know it wasn't with the K&N filter. The highest I have ever heard on a stock 1995 M3 was 223 rwhp which is very, very high. Normal is more like 195 - 205 rwhp.

I had 222.6 rwhp with my 1995 M3 (highest of the day of the normally aspirated Ms up until I left at 3:30 PM that I saw...Brian obviously went later in the day) with Conforti intake and Conforti chip. My goal is 250+ rwhp normally aspirated which shouldn't be too hard with the mods I have coming down the road.

PS - Brian, I think your being a little generous on your drive train loss factor (20%) :) Using your math, my car would be making 278 hp at the crank. I am figuring about 268 hp at the crank using 17%.

FYI, to correct for a 17% loss you actually do multiply by 1.2 => 1/(1-.17)=1.205 ;)

I don't understand why Brian did a 3rd gear pull. I know that most of the guys on the 300ZX boards make a point to dyno cars in 4th gear so that the transmission gearing does not enter the equation (1:1). If one followed that, everyone with an M3 should be dynoing their cars in 5th gear. Why is there such a difference?

I don't know how the heck Joe's M3 made 227rwhp and some change. All it's got is an aluminum flywheel, K&N drop in and the fan delete mod. It is an early build date M3 (mid-'94) so it may have higher compression. Very interesting though.

Apparently spinning the dyno to 80mph is less stressful on the dyno than spinning it to 120. I was kinda ticked off at the shop I dynoed my M3 at a few weeks back right after I installed my new cams, they dynoed in 3rd, but last year they ran it in 4th. I'm half tempted to take it back over and have them run it again in 4th for a better comparison.

I would like to try and paint a picture of my/ and my wife’s experience on Saturday at Dent Fest, Auto Assetts, in Columbus Ohio.

I have been driving BMW's for quite a long time. Beginning with a 1976 2002 to my current 97 M3/4. I have seen several changes in the attitudes of BMW owners and their gatherings, where people are made to feel inferior and not welcomed if you don't have the latest mods, the lingo or the monogrammed attire. I have kept going to these events over the years because of the marque and the hope of meeting people with a genuine heart for friendship and sharing the love of our BMW's.

However, I must say that Saturday's gathering was probably the best I have been to in quite some time. It was definately not like what I described above. It was very unusual to be approached by others introducing themselves and making genuine conversation. It was also good to finally put a face to "usernames"

The selection of cars were absolutely amazing and the host, Auto Assetts and the entire staff, did a really good job at making guest feel comfortable. Well done!!!!

To Chris, the first to introduce himself, Brian and Lisa, thank you for your hard work in putting this event together. It was worth every minute of the 3+hours drive to Columbus.:clap:

Lisa, thank you for making my wife feel comfortable being there. Aaron it was also nice to meet you. Renee, it was nice to meet you too.:D

Auto Assets had their printer die early in the morning, so they're going to mail out hard copies of the dyno runs ASAP. I'll check back with them in a day or two to see when they're going to mail out... plus I want the print out for Lisa's 318ti ;)

Yes, we had a good time and dinner was very good. Lisa's car was very nice and it surely impressed my wife. Very imprressive also was the dyno run with Lisa's car. Good job Chris!!!

I heard a couple people say “hey I thought it would be bigger than this”, but I can say that we defiantly had probably 70 maybe more BMWs there total since you could count ¾ of that at one time. I know a lot of people that were there at 10am left around noon, as we got different people arriving around noon. Good turn out.

I am one of the non-bimmer guys who showed up just to hang out and watch. It was fun meeting a lot of you, and thanx Renee for the ride in the coupe. Too bad it is just a little to small for me ;)

I don't remember the names of most of the people I met, but it was a lot of fun. BTW, how did Lisa's TI dyno? I had to leave before it was put up on the rollers.

Chris, Brian and Lisa. You did a great job putting the event together. Aside from a little sunburn, it was a very nice day and the weather was perfect.

Chris, are we still on for the Airbag Light Reset tool, I can't wait to get rid of that light. I will also contact you in the next week about the Fan Delete and new water pump. I have decided to go ahead and do it, and just put the fan back on in the really hot months (you may have to show me how).

It already is :) This was actually the 2nd anual DF&DD, last year it was at Passen Motorsports in Westerville. We're definitely on for the SRS rest tool, I'll probably pick that up in a week or two.

Maybe, but to go from 245 rwhp to 305-310 crank hp as Brian stated, you would have to multiply by 1.24 to 1.27 (which is more akin to a 20% to 21% loss).

I am pretty confident I know the math.

Ahhh, yeah Brian was also being optomistic about the difference between a 3rd gear pull vs a 4th gear pull. I think Chip (@Auto Assets) told Brian they sometimes see a 5% diff between 3rd vs 4th. Whatever the case, it runs pretty dang good :)

i flushed my coolant on Sunday...and there were 2 or 3 pieces of aluminum shavings...and a ton of mineral deposits...that is what you see at the bottom of the bucket...

My dumb ass managed to forget to stick a couple of washer on there. So when they grabbed onto the shock arms the one shock pulled off and the other slid over. I still managed to pull 184 peak hp and 198 peak torque so I was pretty happy.

Yeah I would have liked to talk to you about Beaver Run a bit more. Good to at least meet you. Maybe I'll see you there this summer if I can get my butt in gear.

I thought when I got a BMW I would become a member of a pretentious community, but I couldn't have been more wrong. One of the great things about this meet was that I didn't notice any condescending attitudes. Everyone was very friendly and approachable and there was a great deal of respect, regardless of your ride or number of mods.

All the pulls with my car were in 3rd gear. 244.9hp and 220.1tq were the numbers it made. As I stood there scratching my head Chip told me that the dyno has a very low correction factor and that all pulls were made in 3rd gear. I shall bug Chip and get the equation they use, he explained it to me quick, but I didn't pay alot of attention. His number off the top of his head to me was 305-310 based on what Porsche motors do on his dyno (FYI, Porsche uses something like a 12% driveline loss). Anyway, I was bummed to not have done a 4th gear pull and had I known they were doing it in 3rd, I would have pushed for one more pull, but in 4th..just for grins. Oxcart has a pic of the computer screen and from the chart, it pulls like a freight train to the top. All in all, AA claims it made the most of any NA BMW that they've ever had on their rollers. I haven't seen the video (my hotel room connection blows), but I hear it's pretty cool. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to stick it up there and see a bunch of tired car guys grinning like school kids when it popped some nice numbers.

The VW clan has invited the BMW group their future events. The VW guys who came to the dyno event had a good time! (They especially liked Lisa's S/C TI). They are a good group of people. Most of my friends in that group are the "old timers" (meaning late 20s - mid 30s) :stickoutt They have a few BMW people who already hang out with them who I have not seen at any BMW events (like Mason with the E30 M3).

FYI: Brian's lamps are modified hellas. Just ditch the eyes and they're factory hellas. The new chrome preinstalled angel eyes from hella... well they're nasty.

The Hellas in my car are not elipsoids. They are the Euro "free form" lights. I really like the light pattern that they out out, the only kind of goofy thing is that they are made for RHD cars. If you want DDE's, get the ZKW from JSP and go with it. The LED/rings in my lights are really dim, and I honestly regret putting them in.


The new Hella with rings installed and the InPros are just gross.

It is one the stops for the event. It is just a chance to get to see some really nice cars getting beat on, with some guys that not knowing how to drive them and some really nice cars getting worked by guys who know how to drive them. I am just planning on going with a cooler and hanging out, plus I know a few people that are in it.

Grove City is about 30-40 minutes from Beaver Run.

This one will be sometime in Aug. and we will have The Radio station The blitz, full catering from City BBQ -- located on henderson rd. in Columbus/Dublin; and.....The Amp girls will be on Hand sighning free hats and what not. Do you go to IRP to drag? I live close by to it, and am thinking of going this summer to see what I can muster up in the 1/4. Let me know when you go and maybe I can meet up also.

i don't know if i could ever drag after my first experience.. had so much wheel hop that i busted the bolt that connects the diff to the body... that was pre-coilvers.. now i don't have any wheel hop.. but it was also a shitty track.. i think it was called edgewater in cinci.. anyone take any driving classes??? i think thats my destination this summer.. just gotta find where to go.. where i can drive my car..

The first place I ever drop was at Mid-Ohio. I did their teen driving program was I was 16 or 17 and then their advanced drivers school when I was 19. It really was a lot of fun, but it's VERY expensive. I've heard good things about Skip Barber. BMWCCA drivers school are great for the money.

money doesn't become and issue when it comes to cars.. now when it comes to the girl, or basically anything other than the car, i have a problem spending.. lets see here.. Eat, or go to driving school :95

If you really want to do it and still eat, I'd do a BMWCCA school and start eating 99 cent cheeseburgers from McDonalds. :D

Skip Barber is a good organization and the school is run very well. The pricing may seem expensive at first, example the three day racing school but price also includes insurance. Also they are SCCA recognized unlike most out there. The BMWCCA schools, which I am a member and have participated in, is also quite good in their own way. Most instructors drive BMW and some race them, which is a benefit to us BMW owners. It all depends on a combination of two things. Your goal and budget. That’s my reason for not doing too many modification at this time so I can get more seat time.
ZKW are next for safety, seats/harness and suspension.:redspot

yeah i would love to get some 4 pt harnesses and keep my stock seats.. although.. the seats i have right now weigh a ton.. vaders, with power and heat..

I am getting 4 point schroth harnesses here in the near future.

I graduated from IU last May, but unfortunately can't make it down to Little 500 because I've got way to much to do this weekend, and that sucks!
My brother is a freshman there and will be livin it up! What year are you? Do you have your Bimmer there?

I got my dyno printouts today, however they aren't the same numbers that they showed me on the computer screen after they ran my car. Also, it shows 3 runs on the printouts, and I'm pretty sure they only did 2 runs. Could I have someone else's?
The #'s shown are:
For HP: run 1: 165
run 2: 166
run 3: 175
For Torque: run 1: 180
run 2: 180
run 3: 188

They showed me a best of 184 hp and 196 torque on the computer after the run was completed, and said it was almost identical to Matt Smith's #'s. So, I'm thinkin they sent the wrong sheet?

Actually, I think they forgot to add the SAE Correction to the printed copies. Does yours say "SAE Corrected HP" or just "Horsepower"?

I have the same issue. The day of the event I was told 211 HP, 210 torque. The charts that arrived show 203 HP and 203 torque. (This is more accurate since the car is bone stock 240 HP).

Shouldn't the chart be labeled with RPMs rather than MPH? I wonder if all the numbers from that day were actually overstated. :az:

I am not upset about it, just curious which numbers are correct.

Well I got a printer working on Auto Assets old version of DynoJet's software. They're trying to track down a similar printer because my dad wanted his DeskJet 600c back for some reason :dunno Anyways, they should be reprinting graphs soon and sending them out. However it does look like a few of the tach readings weren't recorded correctly, mostly on the OBD-2 M cars, so those ones won't graph correctly to RPMs. Hopefully their dyno expert will have some tricks to fix that.

Dunno who "Sheridan" was, the dyno data was not from last weekend. FYI, I copied ALL of their BMW dyno data, not just the ones from DF&DD '03. However I forgot to copy the Viper and VW data :(

On the ones with messed up RPM info you need to map only HP and MPH to see the correct max HP. Also make sure you select "SAE Correction".

Is there a way to view the torque and the horsepower together on the same graph?

Here are my dyno runs (1995 M3 with Conforti chip and Intake):

Yup, click on the right side of the window where it says "None", a little box will pop up allowing you to pick "Torque".

I was pretty happy with my results. I have some pretty intesting plans in the near future along with some plans later this year. I will be sure to do more dyno runs before and after my plans to see how they compare with these results. My goal is 300+ hp (at the crank) or 250+ rwhp which seems feasible based on the baseline results.

Also, based on the MPH on my graphs, my runs were done in third gear :az: So, does that mean I get to add 5% to the correction factor :12: (ala Brian/AA's math....just kidding Brian)?

Based on the AA math, I would be looking at 285 hp at the crank (too high in my opinion). I think I will stick with a 17% correction factor even for my third gear runs which gives me 269 hp which seems pretty solid with my car and the minor modifications.

Other than Brian's M3, my results were right there with Joe (who looks like he pulled 228 rwhp). Our dyno plots are nearly mirror images except Joe's peak out a little higher at the top end (6,000+ rpms).

Joe, what kind of mods does you 1995 M3 have?

I think that they are, as soon as they track down a Deskjet 500c or equivalent. Mason (the guy with the red E30 M3 that works there) thinks that he has one at home and was going to take it in if he does. Otherwise they're going to try using their 812c and if all else fails I'll borrow my dad's 600c again :devillook

Sweet, thanks for checking on that! So they used your printer last time to send out the graphs? Why don't they bite the bullet and get a new one, can't be that much seeing they need it;)

The ones they mailed out were printed on a non-color printer from a Win98 PC using the Run Viewer software that you can DL from dynojet.com. The problem is their actual DynoJet software is DOS based and officially only supports the DeskJet 500c, so they can't just go out and buy a NEW printer... they need an OLD printer ;)

I have the fan delete mod, a lightweight flywheel, the 3.2 clutch kit, the air box resrictor mod and the fan shroud fan flap delete. A K&N dropin and a e46 guibo..... <a B&m short throw with the steel bushings and the uuc tranny mounts(even though those have nothing to do w/ hp ;-)>

I am in awe with your results which are the highest I have heard for a nearly stock '95 M3. I guess deleting the fan gained some power (how much I don't know). Previously, I had heard of one in Texas that pulled 223hp. I don't plan on removing my fan though although I should try some back-to-back dyno pulls with it on and with it removed out of curiousity.

Any idea what your compression is in each cylinder? Any specifics about the types of fluids you use?

Chris: What was the guy at AA saying Saturday about not being able to view power and torque on the graph at the same time?

So will I need to also produce the corrected graph myself like Matt did above, or will AA get on it and send out new ones?

AA says they will send new graphs out by request. If you would like a new graph printed call them @ 614-793-1050. Otherwise you can download the software and data and print your own :)

I just had my tranny overhauled and I use mobil 1 atf, and as far as the engine I use Castrol 5-50. A mixture of 80-75w-90 in the diff. All fluids just changed. Everything else is bmw fluid, exept for the addition of two bottles of water wetter, in the cooling system.

No Idea on the compression, but I will let you guys know shortly.

Could someone that has already downloaded the dynojet software and dyno run files and knows how to correctly combine HP and TQ vs. RPM on a single graph with the SAE correction possibly do it for me for my best run? That was run #3 for me and my name is Matt Baker and I've got a 328is (that info. might be needed as I'm not sure how the files were saved).

Yup, that's why I only have one decent set of torque curves.

Gary,

You need to click on the right vertical axis label where it says none and change it to torque. Then click on the horizontal axis label and change it to RPM.

Try run 2 (you're Slutz right? that was the only z3 I saw on there)
There's something up with runs 1, 3, and 4 (the lines are almost verticle when plotted against rpm. The hp numbers look fine (heat soak?) but the torque is not accurate bec. of the tach chasing problems.

Just have to figure out how I am going to do it. They used the stock airbox if I cant find a way I like I might try that. Passenger side is for symmetry. Brain - I heard from my dad last night and he explained to me what happened. His Sales manager screwed up and was not there yesterday to explain why he did what he did. Believe me when I say this Brian it was in no way intentional, my dad is not as successful as he is by screwing people over, so lets not acuse him of f'ing you. It was not Patrizio's fault either. My dad feels terrible and is doing everything he can to rectify the situation, and if anyone can make it right he can.

I know that things happen. I'm not calling your dad, Patrizzio, or anyone at the dealer names. But, in a way, I did get F'd. Probably not on purpose, but F'd either way. I was planning on picking up a new car on monday and now I can't because someone screwed up, thus screwing me. The thing that burns me most is the way it is being handled, Patrizzio made it sound like he was doing me a favor in offering me another car (that he know I wouldn't want) at the same price, instead of manning up and taking one on the chin. I'm still so pissed off I can't see straight.

I'll email and we can talk more. I'm in no way insulting you, your father, or his people, I'm pissed about the situation that someones F up put me in.

Oh, you didn't want to leave the BMW world anyway. Just get a 2001 M5 and call it a day. The M5 would run circles around the Boxter and you can mod it up to 500 HP NA, at least DINAN did, so it is possible. Then you can teach some Vipers a lesson. :redspot
