Hey Guys, I’m new to the forum here. Well not really, long time lurker, first time poster. I’m in the market for a 03-05 automatic or SMG Z4; either a 2.5 or 3.0, power doesn’t matter much since it’s going to be a weekend driver for the lady to cruise the mall, beach, etc... I wanted to know what things/problems I should be looking for when checking out and test driving Z4’s. Any input would be great. Also any other recommendations out there? Thanks!

Bimmer and BMW Car magazines have Z4 buying guides on the stands this month, with pretty good lists of common issues.

Check out the conbertible top motor -make sure the things not rusted up from sitting in the elements-just replaced the motor in mine ($2390) -mine just failed -luckily it was covered by the CPO warr.-Make sure the person you were buying it from maintained it-if you have any concerns,bring it to a trustworthy mechnic and have thay give you the rundown

I just baught a 03 3.0 6spd for my wife with 40k, Silver on black. I have had some small problems, I would find out if the car was garaged that would help lower the risk that the conv top drains have clogged and water damage has occured to the conv top motor. Mine was garaged and my top drains were not clogged. look under the car its vary low and under carrage and front bumper damage is common on the z-4. Curbs and speed bumps are the enemy here. Mine had some under carrage and front bumper rash, no big deal. I was able to get a copy of the title before I baught the car from the dealer and from that I got the previous owners name and called them and got the vehicle history. Anyway find out as much as you can before. Every car has a story, the older the car the longer the story.
