View Full Version : Will I be happy with a 2.5?
GMUFlier 11-05-2007, 10:44 PM Well, I have been lusting over another car for a little while now, and am really looking hard at a Z4. As of right now, I can afford a 2.5. Will I be happy with this, or should I wait six months until I can afford a 3.0? I just don't know if the 2.5 will provide enough power to appease my boyish side.
inTgr8r 11-05-2007, 11:03 PM IDK - how can we say if you'll be happy?
Treepusher 11-05-2007, 11:32 PM The 2.5 will still put a grin on your face, regardless. And even more so at the gas pump. But only you can measure what makes you happy.

curley2 11-06-2007, 03:24 PM I woudn't be happy. That's why I bought a 3.0i sport
GeorgeT 11-06-2007, 04:28 PM You will be happy with the 2.5 but I would wait and get the 3.0 and then be more happy. I drove a 2.5 nad a 3.0 back-to-back and thought the 2.5 was great until I drove the 3.0: it was more better.

PDo91203 11-06-2007, 06:35 PM If its not going to kill you financially - wait and go 3.0. Otherwise you'll have fun with the 2.5 for sure...
Ridgeway 11-06-2007, 07:48 PM coming from a 328ic you will be happy [enough] w/the 2.5 but there is no question you would be happier w/the 3.0
but if your keeping it long term i'd hold out for the 3.0i
Roffle Waffle 11-06-2007, 09:14 PM 3.0 SPORT or you're not really getting much
Codeman 11-06-2007, 10:21 PM Is the 2.5 a REAL 2.5 or is it a low power 3.0? I'm asking because they "mis-badged" Z3s and the E90 325/328 are 3.0L engines.
Ridgeway 11-06-2007, 10:31 PM it's 2.5L
the n54 iterations are both correctly badged as 3.0's on the z4 (i & si)
Roffle Waffle 11-07-2007, 10:05 AM the 3.0 also gives you the new 6 speed tranny.
Manny34102 11-07-2007, 12:14 PM Further, don't forget that in addition to having an overall better visceral experience with the 3.0i, you'll recapture more dollars when you decide to eventually sell it.

Ask yourself a few questions... Be honest!!!
1. What cars have you owned and loved in the past? What do you own now?
2. Where do you live? Unless you live in the DEEP South, your car (hopefully) is about to sit in the garage for the winter. Wait to buy. See what things look like around late January/Early February. You may have more money by that time (plus it isn't quite yet spring, so prices will be very cheap on roadsters. It may not make sense to buy anytime soon.
3. Is fuel economy important to you? Is this a 'toy' or a daily driver? If the former, fuel won't be a huge deal. If this will be driven regularly, then the 2.5 makes more sense.
4. Are you (or do you want to be) one of wierdos who swear by roadsters, masturbate to pictures of twisty roads and love nothing more than the roaster feel of the wind in your hair and all that? Or do you get off on pulling up with a shiny, fast Bimmer that has balls to lend, despite it being an inline 6?
FWIW, I'm one of those wierdos. The 2.5 does it for me, man. I've driven both and really am happy with the 2.5. The price was insane, it does everything I want it to, and there's really no one I can't hold my own against that I the 3.0 can (save the newer Boxters and possibly the more powered 300Z's. But I hate drag racing. I think the show "Pinks" (and drag racing in general) is as queer as a football bat. Google "Georgia State Route 348" and you'll see the reason I dig the 2.5.
However, if you think I'm queer for saying what I just said, you probably want the 3.0.
There's plenty of other things I could probably mention, but answer those and tell us what you like about the Z4, why you want one, etc. And again, honesty is ok. I have no problems saying that one of the reasons I bought my Z4 is that the aggressive look gets so much attention. Most of it from the ladies. But because of that, I realized that the 2.5 and 3.0 aren't any different in looks and it became a "pro" for buying the 2.5.
If you do get the 2.5, there's no reason not to get a nice example with Sport and Premium packages. You'll be so glad that you did.

Generally, if you're asking the question, you should get the bigger engine.
