View Full Version : Reseting check control on the OBC

Ok, I must be stupid because I searched and couldn't find anything at all.

My OBC consistently yells at me for a 'low beam failure' while both of my headlights obviously work just fine. I have regular halogen bulbs installed and it says "low beam failure" every time I start the car. I also get coolant messages most of the time and the occasional 'lic plate light fail' message.

How do I reset everything so it doesn't keep screaming at me every time I start the car? I hope I don't need that tool...

Thank you.

HMm first one is kinda weird.

Second one is a known problem. The sensors for the coolent can be problematic, resulting in that message. I had it once, went away and never came back.

3rd one...hmm, that's very likely and boot wiring harness on its way out. Also a known problem. BMW did a new replair loom for this.

You better check out the loom that's on the inside of the boot as the first clip is too close at the pivot point, the loom gets kinked. Over time this leads to insulation wearing off the wires (inside the outer most insulation).

So I would carefully slice it open to check before much more damage is done from molten wires.

Here's the piece about the loom from the UK board:

Boot wiring loom

I noticed in the past week that one of my rear number plate lamps was off so went to change the bulb today. First of all, I put the sidelights on to check which bulb was out and found that they were both working. Probably a bad connection I thought so I opened the boot to check the bulb contacts. However, as soon as the boot was opened one of the lights went out. Having heard about problems with the boot wiring loom I decided to dig a little deeper so first disconnected the battery and set about carefully opening up the boot wiring loom with a Stanley knife only to find this nasty surprise under the plastic coating.

The brown wire for had completely sheared and three other wires were badly split exposing the bare wire below, although luckily none of them had shorted together. The brown wire was fixed by soldering a new section in and the other wires were repaired with insulation tape. I then taped up the loom and refitted it into the clips on the bootlid as shown below, making sure it didn't pull tight when the bootlid was opened and closed.

Thought I was quite lucky to get away with just a faulty number plate light bulb after seeing the mess the wiring was in, if the wires had shorted i'm sure they could have caused a lot more damage. Well worth checking on this wiring every now and again purely as a preventative measure.

If you don't fix it, once you reset the OBC it will just show the error next time it happens. Only other option is to short circuit or make a bypass so that the error isn't triggered.
