View Full Version : 6 1/2 in. speakers in the back deck.
teufel530 11-05-2007, 03:01 AM So I wanted to share pictures from my latest project. Last weekend I was at best buy and I was able to snag a set of 6 1/2 Apline S series (SPS-17C2) for $52. The retail prices was $109 but the box was open and everything was missing except the speakers so the customer service manager hooked me up. Hell of a gamble since I have read mutilple times that the larget speakers that fit the back deck of an E-34 are 5 1/4.
As you can see from my pics it took some customizing but I got them to fit and OMG the sound difference is amazing. I actually have base from 6.5s!!!.

Definitely some trial and error. Had to punch a couple of extra holes in this one to fix a mistake.

Here's the first one installed.

Took the oportunity to refurbish the back deck. The sun had faded it to a light purple color so I painted it with a fabric and upolstery spray paint I baught at Kragen Autoparts.

Let me know what you think.
brods525 11-05-2007, 03:32 AM Awesome that you made those fit.
I like it. Makes me want to do my speakers.... Also makes me wish I had a black interior.... :)
Nice job!
EurotrashDew 11-05-2007, 03:43 AM Nice write up and pix... think I'll be picking up some 6.5's.
WolfStrong 11-05-2007, 05:12 AM Awesome!
MSHii 11-05-2007, 06:39 PM Looks good!
Goathumper 11-05-2007, 06:48 PM dose that little plastic enclosure come with the speakers or did you salvage it from the stockers?
atl530i 11-05-2007, 10:43 PM Not bad. I have the same speakers in my rear deck also. Minus the tweeter to its side, that is just too much highs, lol.
rsnajork 11-05-2007, 10:52 PM very inspiring I am really thinking about venturing into this type of audio redesign soon ty for the pics

I salvaged the enclosures from the stock speakers.
Not bad. I have the same speakers in my rear deck also. Minus the tweeter to its side, that is just too much highs, lol.
I played around with the wiring, combining the tweeter and main speaker wiring, and found a few things:
a. don’t do that, I almost blew my amp
b. depending on how you mix them you loose the highs or the lows.
c. because the stock amp has built in crossovers, the new speakers are working more like a cone and midrange than a cone and tweeter, so the stock tweeter is a must. My Blaupunkt stereo gives me incredible flexibility for tweaking the sound.
jspaulding46947 11-06-2007, 12:26 AM Correct me if I'm wrong....but it seems like you can use just a set of regular co-ax speakers and still get sound out of your stock tweeters?? if thats the case I may upgrade the speakers in my touring a lot sooner than i thought.... awesome job on the setup by the way!
MaxSteel 11-06-2007, 12:46 AM I need to dynamat or do something to the underside of my rear deck. Its rattling hardcore from my sub. Is it a pain to remove?

Not hard at all.
1. Remove the seats. The back piece has screws at the bottom corners and two behind the arm rest.
2. Remove the covers on the rear columns. No bolt involved here, you just have to gently pull them out. I used a long screw driver for leverage. No need to pull the light out first because there's a connector you can unfasten once you pull the cover off.
3. revove the four plastic fastners on the front of the rear deck and then gently pull the deck out.
TheGoldenOne 11-06-2007, 08:07 AM how did you make the circle template? its almost perfect lol
teufel530 11-06-2007, 07:09 PM how did you make the circle template? its almost perfect lol
the plastic enclosure that comes with the stock speakers has a venting hold in the bottom. I placed the enclosure upside down on the clip board and traced the intirior opening.
I then used the cut out template from the speaker box and drew the outside circle and the holes for the screws.
I than placed the tweater on the outside edge leaving enough room for the speaker lip and traced the outline.
Next I took a ruler and drew lines from the outside of the circle past the tweater and connected them making a icecream cone shape.
I cut everything out using a jig saw.
Keith 11-06-2007, 08:06 PM Holy crap Angel, is that you???!!!!! :wave

teufel530 11-07-2007, 12:52 AM Yea its me. Been tied down with a new baby and working my ass off.
Heading off to school in Fort Leavenworth, KS in January for a year. Are there any meets scheduled between now and Jan. Would kill to take another drive with the E34 crew before I leave.

Good effort though. Came up trumps.

Definitely an improvement in sound but the system is still missing some depth. Im going to add a sub to the ski hole.
