Hi,
I'm looking for a winter beater and came across a 528e. I understand these are the economy versions. From what I came across, the mpg isn't as impressive as one of think for an "economy" car. I saw 22mpg on fueleconomy.gov for the highway. Is it really this low? Also, do these cars have timing belts? How often should they be replaced and if they snap. Does that bend valves or is this a non-interference engine like the old Volvos? I'm looking at a 87 auto 528e and am curious about mpg and what to keep an eye out for.

general rule of thumb for belts is 60k or 5 years. Its a VERY easy job by the way, not kidding.
You should get 25+ easily as long as the differential isnt changed out to a shorter diff, and the engine is in good condition.
If the belt snaps say bye bye to your valves. These cars are easy to work on if you have simple mechanical skills.

The belt should be replaced before 90K miles. And yes it is not that difficult of a job. I think I paid less than $20US for the part. I get about 29MPG on the highway and 21-23MPG around town. The car has 148k miles. It's the funnest 125hp around!

5yrs or 60k in normal driving. Straight freeway driving may get you to 90k, but it would not be worth the risk
