View Full Version : Rapidfire turn signal

Fuses all good, all bulbs light up fine, hazard lights are all in sync and at regular speed, no warning messages. I had my port running lights blow a fuse, and this started only after replacing said fuse. Now, the left turn blinks and clicks very rapidly.

Searching (the forum and my fusebox) revealed nothing useful.

Ideas?

Turn signal bulb out is the likely culprit.

EDIT: You probably checked that. My E30 has done that for years but never figured it out.

Yes.

BTW, you seem to've abandoned your maplights FS thread.

Haha, thanks, I'll check up on that!

blinker relay? is it doing it on both sides?

Only on the driver's side.

Bentley doesn't seem to mention a relay for the turn signals. Where is it?

(I should know better than to use nautical terms on this board, but "port" and "starboard" are much better terms than left/right or driver's/passenger's side)

Change the bulbs.. whether they work or not and report back.

If that doesn't do it, get a new plug for the front conrner light.

I know it's going to piss me off if I leave it, so I'll replace the bulb, because I've no other options and bulbs are cheap...but it doesn't make any sense that it would appear to work properly but draw more or less current.

I should mention that I deleted my front running lights by messing with the plugs - I've got one wire squeezed between the bulb and its housing, another wire shoved into the running light plug and taped in place, and those two go to a spare lightbulb (10W, same as the running light, I believe) wedged under a wiring harness elsewhere. I should also mention that I've had this rigged up since...April?, and this started happening only after I replaced the fuse last week. Finally, it's worth mentioning that I briefly had my left front running light wired up normally, and it was still rapidfiring.

So where are the turn signal relays?

Found the relay, fiddled with it, nothing. Swapped bulbs from side to side, and the left still rapidfires. Couldn't find anything relevant under the rear seat.

Should I replace the relay, or is there anything else worth checking?

my first guess was the relay. i'd replace it just to see.

Was the relay the issue? I know on some VW's I had they were notorious for having turn signal relays go bad and they were under the dashboard. Anyway, I have a similar problem with a '91 525 that I just got, except the culprit is the passenger side that blinks really fast. However, the hazard lights work fine. My issue is probably a bulb needing replaced, but just in case it would be nice to confirm the location of the relay :) Thanks.

check to see if the parking lamp filament is burnt out on the passenger side. The front turn indicator/parking lamp bulbs have 2 filaments in them (in the USA)...the lower wattage filament is for the parking lamp, and the higher wattage filament is for the turn indicator.

Your fast blinking may be from one of the filaments being burnt out in the bulb or is loose. You can either swap the bulbs left to right and see if the problem follows the bulb...or pull the bulb to see if a filament is loose or burnt.

I've swapped all the bulbs to no effect. Filaments are fine. In any case, I know that the car lets me know if either the parkinglights or turnsignals are out.

The relay is in the main fusebox. It's dark grey and towards the front, if memory serves. I've yet to replace it, but standby for updates on what happens when I do.

OFF TOPIC, BUT WHAT MAKES THEM BETTER TERMS? IF YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF, THEN WOULDN'T THEY IN FACT BE HORRIBLE TERMS AS YOU COULD HAVE SAVED TIME AND CONFUSION JUST SAYING DRIVER/PASSENGER?

LOL

Ah, but Driver / Passenger are different depending on which side of the car the steering wheel is on. Port and Stbd are always the same as you face the front of the ship, I mean car....at least for us nautically inclined. :buttrock

You mean face the front, as in from the perspective of the driver, not as in looking at the front of the car yeah?

Yes as you stand on the ship looking towards the bow. (It's hard to face the front of a ship in any other sense as you will soon drown :()

Mine started doing the rapid blink this morning, doesn't do it all of the time and if you leave it on it will slow back down to the normal speed, It looks like all of the lights are working. Very strange.

did that end up solving your issue?

moroza

No.

I tried a relay off eBay and a parts car, and all three (including the original) rapidfire on the left. Even swapped the socket.

If I planned on keeping the car for longer (rust + 180whp + 17mpg = no), I'd've replaced some combination of the LKM, relaymodule, generalmodule...and failing that, run my own wires and relays and bypassed this broken stupid shit.

I had the same problem with my passenger side front. The light was working. I pulled the bulb and it appeared fine...both filaments intact. I replaced the bulb with a new double filament and it has not done the rapid flash again. Dumb luck? Maybe, but that rapid flash thing will drive you nuts. Of course I probably just put the "malooch" on myself yet again!

Are you using any Chinese made bulbs? Bmw's don't take kindly to non oem bulbs.

Cleaned the sockets? tsted with the bulbs out for continuity issues to each other or to ground? Sure the Ground is ok? (they'll back feed and light up without it on some cars but it will make everything wonky.)

You are using 1157 with the 5 watt contact masked off right? not with the 15w masked off and wires flopped?? Just hoping it didn't have 56's and at some point the park made cantact and shorted/backfed and fubar'd a wire in the harness.
