Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I just bought a 2004 Z4 Roadster 3.0i with SMG. It's only been 6 days and I've already got a very serious problem.

When I go driving, say on city streets, the power turns off for like 1 second and then comes back up and the car goes into neutral while I'm using the manual SMG. Just today, I was driving it and the power went out, clock reset, it shifted to neutral then BRAKED !! It was really scarry as I was glad that there were no cars behind me. Also, this time the little gear light with the "!" turned on while it was in neutral and I couldn't go anywhere.

Anyways, I had it towed to Irvine BMW and they'll have to take a look at it on Monday. Has anyone else had this problem with their SMG while doing normal driving?

This really worried me as I don't normally expect such problems on a CPO car still under the original warranty. I also got the extended maintenance package and 2 year CPO warranty. I just don't know how to handle it right now, do you guys think they sold me a lemon? This is very frusturating.

this has happened to me the first week i had my car.... but i thought i was just tripping out cus it was late and i was a bit tired... the display blacked out for a quick second and that was it. let me know what they find out so i can ask the dealer to take a look at it before my warrenty expires. good luck.

Thanks for your input. I'm glad I know I'm not crazy now. I'll let you guys know tomorrow what they tell me. I heard that if they don't fix it within 2 tries, you can claim lemon law. But you have to bring it in the first time before the original warranty is up. That's like a few more months for me. Hopefully they'll thoroughly check it, and I'll make sure they got it fixed before they hand it back to me. I'm not about to be driving again with this s*** hiccuping again. CPO does seem like crap to me now.

Have had CPO issues with my 03 Z4-you have to make sure they cover everything -don't let them tell you its not.Recently had the power top hydraulic motor replaced at the tune of $2390.The 15 yr old service advisor at Transatlantic BMW told me it was not covered because it was considered part of the convertible top.Bull-it only took 2 minutes with the service dept. manager to get it covered.Of course it took them 2 friggin days to replace it -and I had to reinstall the centerconsole correctly, but it saved me some loot.Everytime the CEL comes on I have to bring it to them to clear it-they never can find the problem-Don't take the car back until its 100% fixed or you'll be looking at future headaches.

Sorry to be off-topic, but was your motor replacement due to water/moisture building up in the motor area? I had my top replaced under wtty., but it was for a wear mark in the canvass. I'm worried about the motor going out, but the car has literally never seen rain. I may be ok???

Is this a darker silver like Sterling, with red interior?

Sounds like the SMG control module is having issues. My old Z4 3.0i with SMG (sterling silver, dream red interior. Lease returned to Irvine BMW) had the same issue when new. A couple of times it would go into neutral in heavy traffic and leave me "stranded" A quick trip to the dealership to swap out the SMG control module to an updated one solved it.

Well. I must say they were quick at fixing it. I got it back tonight and it's fine. They told me that there was a wire attached to the battery and was causing the battery to come loose !! Thus, it died while i was driving multiple times. They rewired it and secured the battery. I wonder if I'll be having anymore problems with this SMG...

That's weird. The car SHOULD run without a battery. As long as the engine is turning, it's getting power from the alternator.

Hmm. Good Point. I'll give them a call up tomorrow to have someone explain it to me. I didn't think about it, I just accepted what they told me. But, it's been a day so far and everything is A-OK.

Not with mine, originally the rep said I must have driven the car in the rain with the top down-I told him he was nuts.My pump had a hydraulic failure(they couldn't tell me why)-there is a issue with the body drain getting plugged-if I remember correctly there was a thread here on how to clean out the drains. The whole top needs to come out if your replacing the motor-took the dealer 2 days-

I also recently purchased an 05' Z4 3.0 with GPS from the dealership (certified, and all that jazz), and as soon as I drove it off the lot, I noticed that the GPS was not functioning at all. How the hell did they do a certification check, but not notice that the GPS does not work?

I took it back, and they replaced the entire GPS system (minus the screen, of course) for no charge, but I'm still frustrated.

I also have a loud wind noise coming from the drivers side window near the top. They said it sounded the same as other Z4s, but my Z3 was quieter..

Maybe they treat me badly because I'm only 20? I am still pretty ticked off with the dealership, but I absolutely love the car. Driving it is so much more fun than my Z3, and the M sport seats fit me absolutely perfectly (though they make it quite difficult to get in/out)

My experience is that they don't give a crap about anyone's age. They'll treat you with respect when you treat them with respect, and they'll treat you double good when you're informed and intelligent about your rights.

I had to do some shopping around by myself to help my mom purchase her '91 Pathfinder when I was 18. Never had a problem with any dealership I walked in. They know business when they see it. :dunno
