View Full Version : 95 525it surging at speed.
Pianofxr 11-03-2007, 10:30 PM Hey guys,
Got a 95 525it, 130k, runs well except I get a surging at light load. Going up a moderate hill almost always around 50mph. Doesn't present at idle or anywheres else. Only had the car for a couple of weeks and am ironing out various e34 issues. The board and the links have been great BTW.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
4500 RPM 11-03-2007, 10:36 PM Mine does the exact same thing! It can't be a trans thing, I think it's in the engine.
I'm about to change the O2 sensor, that's my guess as to the culprit. If that doesn't work then I'm cleaning the MAF.

We can do that when you head out here as well. MAF cleaner is a wonderful thing.
attack eagle 11-03-2007, 11:00 PM Y'all change your atf recently?
Random thought:
50-55 is where my torque converter locked up, perhaps it is hovering between about to lock up and not?
IF you click to Sport mode and it clears up, and driving the same rpm in 3 up the hill instead of D does not present the issue, I would definitely think it was tranny related.

Wow, you know what, I never thought about that. Makes sense though.
To elaborate on the problem.
Cruising at part-throttle at say, 60 MPH. 2800 RPM or so.
When I give it more throttle the revs DROP! Then when I let up the revs shoot up by about 200 RPM. Any ideas?
Pianofxr 11-15-2007, 08:30 PM Changed out trans filter and the 3 qts Dexron. Made no difference. Was able to take the car on a long cruise today and found it did the same thing.
Exact symptoms ,repeatable, were 55mph, 2200rpm, tip in to throttle to clinb a rise or hill and engine surges 500 rpm more or less. Throttle past it, raise speed or click trans to manual( which naturally raises rpm) and it stops. There is no shuttering like a torque converter slip. Really seems to be at that particular fuel requirement. I don't much about the MAF but would some particular rate of flow cause this? A throttle pos sensor was mentioned, but wouldn't that repeat at any speed? It would do it at a stop too.?
Car is very drivable as is but naturally I'd like to sort it out.
Anybody?
Thanks,
Andrew
playzure 02-23-2008, 11:36 AM I'm having the same problem in a 1995 325i. The torque converter locks and unlocks when applying power at highway speeds. At cruise the transmission is in the un-lock mode(not normal) and when you push on the gas it goes to lock mode for a while then starts to surge. Seem to work normal when cold but gets worse when hot. Shifts are normal. Have not gotten any fault lights or codes. Have changed filter and fluid. Checked fluid level several time. All with no help. Any ideas? Is it a pressure problem in the transmission, weak TC, transmission computer, or ?
Thanks,
Will
