Has anyone ever replaced their door check/stop?

I bought the replacement part, but I believe that the interior door panel needs to be removed and the inner lining needs to be removed as well.

Is that right, and has anyone done that before?

See, in this photo you can see that the door check/stop is still covered by the inner lining. However, it kind of looks like if you just move the speaker out of the way, then you could slide it out.

And in this illustration on realoem.com, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=GF83&mospid=47528&btnr=41_0013&hg=41&fg=40
It shows the door stop completely different than how it really is (at least on my pre- 9/97 manufactured model).

And do I need a new pin, or can I re-use the original one? (item #4 in this illustration http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=GF83&mospid=47528&btnr=41_0013&hg=41&fg=40)

I just replaced mine today took less then a hour you need to roll up the window and speaker, pull back the liner at the front edge. pull the rubber cover and remove the two star bolts holding the check to door. I did reuse the pin and works fine. you can reach inside door and remove old check and place new. The bolts might be tight due to corosion lube , use plilers if they are tight.

Wow, thanks.

Now, when you pull back the inner lining, do you have to re-glue it, or does it just go back?

The vapor barrier is held on with the black sealant when you pull it off i just make sure to stick it back (gets stringy) either back on the door or on the panel it stuck back fine. It would help if its a little warmer when you try to pull it apart. and after removing the speaker you can pull it back enough to get your arm inside the door where the check is.
