Hey Guys,

My car has recently thrown a CEL with code P1160 and P1158, both related to the Manufacturer Control Fuel/Air Metering. Symptoms of the car was just related to start up. Every once in a while, after the car would start, it wouldn't be able to hold idle and die. After a couple more starting attempts, it would usually go back to normal. I'm about to head out to clean the MAF, but just wanted to get some opinions in case it didn't work. Anyone else pull the same code? What did you do? Thanks for the help!

I found that cleaning it was a very short-term fix. I could be wrong, but I think you'll find that you simply need to replace the MAF.

Classic MAF symptom. The car will be difficult to start when cold. One must force the car to run by judicious use of the throttle. Once warmed up, the car will run, but will still want to die. This behavior normally allows one to reach a dealer/indy...where for a king's ransom, they will replace the entire MAF.

Secure a MAF (electronic portion only) from a Range Rover/Land Rover. The BMW and Land Rover are interchangeable, but for a lot less money. Search the forums and you will find the correct one....no need to replace the entire barrel/cylinder.

Good luck. These things go bad from time to time...not a big deal, but irritating.

When you can start the car when it's cold in the morning, try unplugging the MAF and if the idle corrects itself and runs fine, then then it's gone bad. You don't want to reset any of the codes until you replace it first though. Mine got so bad that the car wouldn't run at all, and when it did it would buck and stumble while driving, fall of its face on the freeway, then launch like a bat out of hell. Resetting the codes erases what the computer has learned to work around it until you can get it replaced. I've got 32k and I already need to replace mine again, so I'm gonna try the Land Rover idea and see how it works out pricewise since I spent a few hundred on mine first replacement from www.autohausaz.com
