View Full Version : Oil o_O
M3vil 11-01-2007, 01:43 PM ya so ive tried 5 different oils since ive owned the car (i researched and got professional opinions on both the BMW and regular tech sides first).
so far:
Mobil 1 5-30 (didnt like at all)
Mobil 1 20-50 (not bad, less VANOS tick)
Castrol Syntec 10-40 (one of the best ive tried)
Castrol Syntec 5-50 (again, one of the best)
Pennzoil 10-40 (sucked)
my next test is Mobil 1 0-40 European Formula, the autozone i work at just got it in stock and ive already reserved 8 qts of it.
whats all your climatized opinions on the oil we should use around here?
just curious.
///M3Augy 11-01-2007, 01:44 PM 10w-40 Royal Purple in Summer
5w-30 Directly from the Dealership whens its colder (not really driven in winter, only when roads are clean)
FredK 11-01-2007, 01:49 PM Only the best: cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.
allen201 11-01-2007, 02:13 PM I'm running Valvoline max life 10w-40 right now, quite happy with it. With winter approaching, my next change will be a 5w-30 or something along those lines.
00BMW540i6 11-01-2007, 02:24 PM Amsoil 5W-40 European Car Formula only in my car.
https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx
dave96dcm 11-01-2007, 02:28 PM I use Royal Purple 15w40 in the summer, going to 5w40 in the winter.
Evergreen Dan 11-01-2007, 03:43 PM Ran Mobil 1 5W30 in winter and 0W40 in summer. Started consuming oil. Mike Morris suggested I run Castrol Syntec 10W30 in winter and 5W50 in summer. The car sees a lot of track time in the summer.
Just changed the oil yesterday, so I have no idea if consumption will change or not.
Of course, either oils are really synthetic anymore. I figure a 5000-7000 mile / 6 month service interval is fine with these pseudo-synthetic oils, although my outgoing summer oil was pretty black. The oil regularly sees 260 degrees on the track (with a cooler).
dave96dcm 11-01-2007, 03:59 PM That's too hot, oil starts to break down at 230-240* you need a bigger cooler. If you are concerned with getting too big of a cooler, Earls makes some oil thermostats that open at 160*, I would do that and a bigger cooler.
ESMcBlurM3 11-01-2007, 04:24 PM My last oil change I went with Castrol syn 10-40 - I'm liking it.
I'll be running it all "winter" long.;)
savage217 11-01-2007, 04:30 PM RP 10w-40 Love it. I had catrol syntec 5w-30 before, it wasnt bad it was a bit thin though. I love the rp.:alright
S.A.B. 11-01-2007, 04:44 PM Castrol 10-40 year round.
Evergreen Dan 11-01-2007, 07:00 PM I would think that 10W40 is a little heavy for those cold CT mornings. If course, the frigid NC winters would be even worse ;) .

I've never had an issue. She's knock free at almost 200k :)

That's pretty awesome.
ESMcBlurM3 11-01-2007, 08:39 PM I long for the days to when I will own a 368....
Evergreen Dan 11-01-2007, 08:42 PM Was your car at Lime Rock for BMW Vintage Festival this summer?
Not sure if you are asking me, but, no, I wasn't. I've never been to the festival, but it sure sounds like fun from what I've read.
BTW, in the photo, the car has snows on it. Stock street wheels are in the car with new rubber on the roof. Not the coolest shoes, but, hey, you don't see a 12-tired coupe every day.
Photo was taked at HMS Motorsport's old location.

You dont park/store your car in Framingham at a place called xtreme performance on route 9 do you? I was in there one day and saw and acid green m coupe, looked exactly like yours.
Chronic2112 11-01-2007, 10:34 PM I just started using Valvoline SYNpower and I swear my engine sounds better (whatever that means).
M3vil who is that girl in your avatar?

Acid Green? :mad j/k No, that's not me. I see another one in the Waltham area and on 128 every once in a while. I don't think the other one is a track junkie, though.
Chronic2112 11-02-2007, 10:01 AM Hey I work in Waltham I think I've seen it. ;)
bmxcm 11-02-2007, 10:05 AM i just had an oil analysis done on some RP20W50 that i ran for 7500mi. it did well, still had some active additive in it, but they recommended i try 6k mi intervals this time around:embarrasm. that stuff ticked a bit after auto-x runs, i'm running RP10W40 now and i'm suprised but i don't beleive it ticks now after runs. at least not that i have noticed...y did u ask this in this subforum?

RP is way to expensive. looks like castrol syntec 10-40 wins. personally i loved it. im trying the mobil 0-40 for the next one, than probably going back to castrol 10-40.
thanks guys. just wanted to know what you recomended for the climate.

RP is only 7 dollars a quart...
M3vil 11-02-2007, 06:42 PM ya thats 7$ i dont have. plus my autozone only has 5-30 and 10-30.

savage217 11-02-2007, 07:17 PM Castrol syntec is the same price as RP. If anything RP may be .50 cents or a dollar, at the very most, more than syntec. Its worth it.
dave96dcm 11-02-2007, 07:37 PM I buy RP in a 5 gallon container for like $120 ish, so $6 a quart, you can get 3 oil changes out of it.

Where do you get it? :help
You could have quite a Mazola party with that. :devillook
Must be fun pouring out of that container.
dave96dcm 11-02-2007, 08:42 PM Not bad, I just use a funnel. I get it from a local shop in Fitchburg, I have known the owner for a long time, I just call him the day before and he gets it in. It is Victory Auto in Fitchburg, MA, tell him you know Dave with the BMW and the Impala.

vertius 11-28-2007, 02:28 PM I know, late reply, but I just bought Mobil 1 0W-40 at Advance Auto Parts for $5.88 a quart! Pretty good price.
