View Full Version : Opinions on Chicago Area dealers?
dclee1 11-01-2007, 11:21 AM Hi guys, new member here. I'm itching to pick up my first bimmer, and I want to put down a deposit to hold a spot for the 135. Problem is, I have no experience with chicago area bmw dealers and was wondering if anyone had good/bad opinions as to any of them. Any help is appreciated!

My buying experience at Luxury Motors was very good. They have tons of BMWs and other high end cars.
They have several locations. I bought mine in Franklin Park, location on website is O'Hare.

Hmmmm ....
I have heard mixed reviews about luxury motors actually. The truth is, I have never bought there myself, so I cannot be completely objective. If you are looking at ordering from a new car dealership, I have heard only good things about Motor Werks in Barrington. I have bought parts there in the past and found the service concering parts fast, and very good. That included order parts from other dealerships nationwide (for my 87 six series). Best of luck.
ginz111 11-01-2007, 04:57 PM I have purchased 4 BMW's from Patrick BMW in Schaumburg. I have been very happy with each purchase and every service visit.

your on f crack.....stay away from Lux.Motors !!!! :nono:nono
I would go with:
Patrick's BMW in Schaumburg or
Perillo BMW in Chicago
Good thread on Lux.Motors on the local Chicago Euro forum:

For sales, I highly recommend Motorwerks in Barrington. Excellent experience w/ them. My experience with Patrick was uninspiring, and Perillo was downright infuriating, to the point that I appreciate the opportunity to give them a negative referral.
For service, I'm disappointed with Motorwerks. Nothing terrible, just not very impressive, and their parts and service pricing has been ridiculously higher than Patrick, where I have had excellent experiences on every service visit.
dclee1 11-01-2007, 06:53 PM Thanks for the replies guys, keep them coming.
It anyone's curious about my experiences over the phone, at Patrick I kept getting transferred to a line where nobody picked up, and one saleswoman at Westmont kept telling me how "hot" I'd look in the car and how I'd be the first person driving it around town...if I put down a $2500 deposit...
Anyway, the salesperson I spoke with at Knauz seemed very up-front and did not give me any pressure. Has anyone heard anything about those guys?

wouldnt it be better if u went in person ?
Wojtek79 11-03-2007, 07:00 PM I deal with the guys at Orland Park BMW, and their service dept is good.
Luxury Motors - have not been there but often see bad reviews about them.
dclee1 11-05-2007, 05:24 PM Of course I'll end up going in person to ultimately decide on a dealership, but at this preliminary stage of contacting car dealers, I wanted to ask for opinions and share whatever impressions I have gotten so far. I don't want to end up personally stopping by every dealership in the Chicago area, so I'm trying to whittle down the list at this point.

What are you looking for from a dealer? To be honest, not too many dealers are going to want to chat with you at this stage. They would rather devote their time to a customer who is going to take delivery now vs a customer who may or may not take delivery in the future.
Are you looking for the cheapest price? best service? which one gives the most free trinkets? best coffee?
jakeyb 11-07-2007, 09:37 AM It all depends on the salesman. The only salesman I actually enjoy dealing with in the Chicagoland area is Mark Graffagnia (spelling incorrect) of Bill Jacobs BMW (Naperville, IL). Luxury Motors is full of a bunch of punk ~20 year olds who have no idea what they are doing. I almost bought a car from them, and am glad I backed away when I did. I've had great luck at Patrick BMW, especially with the Service and Parts people. Remember, you may deal with the salesman a few times, but you are going to deal with that dealership's service department more often in the future.
tjmonsen5 11-08-2007, 11:51 AM Anyone have any experience with Anderson? They are undergoing some construction and should be finished in a few weeks, really enlarging the waiting room, parts desk, and showroom. I would try them, the salesman you want is James Orton.

+1 on Bill Jacobs
Bought 3 from there

Stay away from Anderson. I had bad experience in service there. Not sure about sales. Their services is mixed with Mazda and VW, so half the time they have no idea what they are doing.
I would recommedn Levin BMW in Scherillville, IN. Sales dept is pretty good. Service is good too.

True. I have had EXCELLENT service and parts experiences from Moror Werks in Barrington. Never bought a car there, but the parts/service has been top notch on serveral visits.

Mr stockbottom,
nice lookin seven there. You gotta bring that guy by one of our local meets. Drop by the forums and plan on coming to a meet. We're a close knit group of Euro junkies and heavy on the bimmer population. Stop by and ask for Lsixer AKA Adam. Hope to see you soon!!

NinetyEight740 12-07-2007, 10:09 PM i dont want to be badmouthing any chicagoland dealers, but luxury motors is NOT a bmw dealer. I am a mechanic at a dealer and have seen many cars come for inspections from luxury motors that have been wrecked. They may offer you a good deal but you cannot service with them. I personally would only buy from a BMW dealer.
Schalldampfer1 12-11-2007, 09:29 PM I got mine at Elmhurst BMW on Lake St. Very good service there and were flexible with price. I got them to knock off a few thousand easy. Ask for Josh. Tell him Anthony with the 5 that works at the Bank sent you.
cabin 12-12-2007, 02:50 AM As far as service goes, Anderson is a JOKE!
I've taken my previous M3's there a couple of times, and each time, something got screwed up. One time, it took nearly a week to replace the clutch slave and master cylinders. They told me it was going to be 2 days max. The next time, I took my car in to be aligned, have some cooling system work done, and have the tires replaced. Well, the dumbasses somehow didn't realize that M3's have staggered wheels, and put the fronts on tires on one side, and the rears on the other side. How the hell does a BMW dealer make that mistake?
Granted, they're like 5 minutes from my house, I'll never take my car there for service again.
dclee1 12-13-2007, 04:33 PM I think service would be a priority, but of course price is a major factor as well. it's good to hear that people are getting positive experiences with multiple bmw dealerships...maybe that's just par for the course with a luxury vehicle?
I had a friend that worked at a honda dealership for a year that was absolutely disgusted with the type of person that worked there, and what they would do to customers to make a buck. (it was in DC, nowhere around Chicago). and he's not exactly one of the highest moral fiber either, so the fact the games they were playing was disgusting him is saying something.
anyway, i currently have a deposit for the 1 with a guy, Tim I believe, at motor werks, but of course that's apt to change if i hear something that convinces me otherwise. the problem with motor werks is that its so freakin far from the city where i live...
Shivan000 12-14-2007, 05:34 PM I always took my Mini to Bill Jacobs back when it was still under warranty, and I never had any problems with them.
GeilM 12-15-2007, 10:14 PM Does anyone know if any of the local dealers support the Wind City BMWCCA? Would be great if we could find one that supported either the forum or BMWCCA.
cwsqbm 12-17-2007, 07:21 PM Anyway, the salesperson I spoke with at Knauz seemed very up-front and did not give me any pressure. Has anyone heard anything about those guys?
Knaus is fine. Actually, most dealers in the area are fine although its possible to run into a bad salesman at any one of them.
As for BMWCCA sponsorship, Knaus and Motorwerks run ads in the newsletter, and Fields and Patrick let the club use their shops for school pre-techs, and Bill Jacobs lets us use his personal car museum's parking lot to hold the annual vintage fest carshow.
EVILZ33 12-20-2007, 11:28 AM ive bought one car from luxury my family has bought several we havent had a problem but we knwo the owner but i will say this the salesmen there are total douche bags but a couple here and there are pretty good. laurel bmw is a good bmw store my friend works there as a salesmen chris hes a good guy im actually gonna buy my m5 from him at laurel
roys740 12-27-2007, 11:21 PM Personally, I love the Orland Park dealership. They are top notch. They even let existing BMW owners come in and do extended test drives of new models. :buttrock
dclee1 01-09-2008, 05:55 PM Well, it appears that Fields is one of the rare chicagoland dealerships letting people take ED orders out of their initial allocations, so that's probably what I'm going for.
cat97628 01-09-2008, 06:24 PM I bought mine at Bill Jacobs and was happy with the experience.
alloyed 01-10-2008, 11:32 AM Took advantage of the incentives on 07s and now I am very happy!
What service center would you recommend in Chicago? I live close to Perillo, but it seems that the extra drive to Patrick or Motorworks may be worth it?
Any service experiences would be appreciated!

Patrick is worth the drive.
Did you get your coupe from Perillo?
alloyed 01-10-2008, 07:46 PM Did you get your coupe from Perillo?
Nope! Drove up to Zimbrick in Madison, their price was cheaper by several K.

Oh.. I was at Perillo late last week and remember someone working a deal for a Z4 Coupe.
Anyway, I recommend Patrick. Here is a review I wrote up for them for some work they did for me a while back:

alloyed 01-11-2008, 12:39 AM Cool, thanks for the link!
Doesn't seem like there is a clear cut winner, everyone has good and bad things to say about all the dealerships.
Except for Perillo, seems like there isn't much good in that case...
dclee1 01-14-2008, 08:10 PM Yeah, that's the general feeling I was getting from all the review of places - that there was no clear cut winner where nobody had any bad experiences...
jcyzman 01-30-2008, 04:26 PM Hi Very good experience with Lux Motors S. of Chicago. Great way to pick up excellent condition off Lease 2003 530i. Very deep on selection. Great website. Sent company to inspect car then took train from michigan, made it back home same day. Use older salesman. Internet price fixed. Would do it again. Jeff jcyzman@gmail.com

Had the same thing happen to my 525IT with M5 wheels. Tire America mounted the directional tire backward on two of the rims becuase they didn't realize that the rims are also directional.
MGW540i6 01-31-2008, 12:10 AM I purchased an '03 540i from Luxury Motors (Orland Park, IL) about a year ago, personnel did not like the salesman. I've put 20k miles in one year and not one issue. Then again I did go over it with a fine tooth comb. Also, I walked away with 8k more in my pocket, according to KBB.
