uphjly 11-01-2007, 10:37 AM Hi everyone, new to your form, lots of information. I owned a Bmw 5 series back in the early 80's and I loved the car, couldn't kill it, was diffentately on e of the toughest car I've owned, then I got bit by the Jag bug, but I've grown tired of the problems with these cars and I've started looking for another 5 series. I was looking at a 97 540i and I'm really impressed with power/handling of this car. This particular car is in great shape with 1 problem, the owner tells me that every once in a while a code comes up for the transmissiom, I believe he said its power save mode? he said he had it checked at the local BMW dealer and they told him there is no issue with the trans but it appears to ba a malfunction with the actual instuement cluster? Any thoughts, thanks in advance for your input.
Shardul 11-01-2007, 10:40 AM find another one without transmission issues. it is expensive to replace or rebuild a transmission.
fragzem 11-01-2007, 10:41 AM thats a $3000 problem right there
walk away
walk away
+1
for as many as you can find with a tranny problem, there are always going to be several more 540/6's that you can find without it. not worth it!
welcome to the forums.
uphjly 11-01-2007, 11:06 AM Thanks guys for the reponse, so if the dealership has confirmed it is not an issue with the transmission, I've seen his records and talked to the dealership, there still is a chance its a tranny issue? By the way what is that particular code, what does it mean?
uphjly 11-01-2007, 11:07 AM By the way Fragzem I love your profile picture, ya gotta love Keith, classic

uphjly 11-01-2007, 11:14 AM So this module would also be expensive to replace? Just curios guys, I think you are right I should stay away, but it was a very nice car in great shape.
