Does anyone know a good place to get some window tinting done around the west side of the twin cities?

The Zeibart chain did a very nice job on my E36, price was around $300 for their highest quality film. I suppose it depends on the actual person who does the tint more than the place you have it done.

Another vote for Ziebart! They did 4 cars for me and did a good job every time. They are a little on the expensive side, but not too bad.

P&L automotive in Edina has done some really good stuff for my family including tinting a few cars. I know they carry lifetime guarantees on all their stuff if that is important.

Autovisions in Eden Prarie... Todd is the best tinter I have ever seen, Ive had 9 or 10 cars done by him. He's an ass to deal with, but his work is second to none.

Everyone here is welcome to Join Neuwerks for our winter Escape in Febuary or March (haven't decided on a start date)

It is a European car drive from Chanhassen to New Ulm for lunch.. and a return trip to Chanhassen.. We had this event last year and even had a 330CI join us..

Can anyone suggest or know of places in the Twin Cities area that do powdercoating of wheels?

I'd like to get the centers of my E36 wheels done in black sometime...

Does anyone know about taking out the fan and the fan clutch. Is it okay to run without one? Any effects on the engine? Any extra things to apply if you take out the fan?

Regarding fan questions: It's typically considered okay to run without it in MN, as long as you don't spend a lot of time in bumper to bumper traffic at 95F with the A/C cranked.

MTriple, I just bought a 2001.5 Audi S4, and I recall Whitey had that yellow one that was pretty well tricked out. The Audi boards just suck azz, so I guess I need to hit up the BMW guys to find anything out! Haha...you'd be surpised how little there seems to be aftermarket for those cars compared to the Bimmers, I guess I was spoiled before!

Anyway, do you guys still get together? If so, I wouldn't mind chatting up the car a bit with him to pursue recommendations and advice on aftermarket components. Let me know if you guys plan to get together anytime, or have him shoot me an email.

Wow, this thread is huge! I'm here, but my car is parked for the winter. . . Some kind of group drive next summer would be awesome.

By the way, does anyone know about MN Hiway 1? It's around 30-40 miles long about an hour north of Duluth. The pavement is immaculate- not so much as a crack, at least in the five miles I've driven on it. And best of all, the thing has more dips and twists than a go-cart track. There's not a lot of traffic, as not many people regularly commute from Ely to Isabella. :rolleyes The speed limit is 50, with turns rated from 15 to 45 miles an hour, if I remember correctly. The scenery is fabulous. Unfortunately, somebody had the dumb idea, despite the fact that there has never been a fatal crash on this highway, that it is extremely unsafe and needs to be renovated. So, by 2011, it will be just another stretch of straight, boring asphalt. The only work scheduled for 2005 is a single bridge partway through the roadway, so we still have time to enjoy it. As soon as I get a new driveaxle in my car and the roads are clean next spring, I'm going to spend a Saturday up there burning the pavement and taking pictures between runs. I'm already wishing the snow would leave. . .

Anyways, I thought it would be greedy to keep all the fun to myself. I have only sampled a few miles in the family Caravan, but it got me hooked. It's not really a high speed road, which makes it safer, but you can still drive it as if you're on a racetrack without risking an arrest for egregious violation of the law.

Hey guys. I got a 1995 BMW 325is, and its automatic. I was thinking that in the next couple of months i might wanna swap the transmission for a manual one. Hey guys. I got a 1995 BMW 325is, and its automatic. I was thinking that in the next couple of months i might wanna swap the transmission for a manual one. If you aren't gonna do it yourself, it's going to be cheaper just to sell your car and buy one with a 5spd in it already. Unless you swap in an M3 motor at the same time...that would be almost cost effective.

Alright guys. I've been in here a lot and posted a little but unlike most of you I have one of the older year E21's. She's a '78 320is that I've just become so attached to that my long-term desire is to restore her from shark-nose to bumper. Where I need your help is this. Last summer she overheated something fierce and and I'm sure the head gasket is shot and more likely the head is cracked or warped. She starts and runs a little but that's about it. So what I've done is I've managed to acquire another used 2.0 head and I have no idea where to take it to get it checked out to make sure it's worthy of dropping in. I live in Richfield and the worst part is I live in an apartment so no way to work on my car :mad . It was towed last week week because they thought it didn't run. Cost me $285 to get her back. So (1) Who knows some good shops that will do me right on assessing the head and (2) anyone know of any garages or the like that I can rent to work on her this winter? Yes, funds are an issue....I'm looking for something around $50-$60 a month. Wife's a cancer patient so we're a single-income family. Well, sorry so long-winded here. Oh and thanks for posting some shops for powder-coating! :buttrock I've got some 15" Panasports that will need to be restored as they're starting some early stages of peeling.

Yeah, I've noticed everyone has sold them...so now I guess I'm the odd one out, but at least it's different! Haha...I really wanted the 4-doors and didn't want another E36 M3, so the change was inevitable. Since mine is a 2001.5, I'm hoping to circumvent some of the reliability issues. Part of why I want to be well-read on it before modifying anything...it may just remain stock for a good daily driver year round. I've spent enough money on mods...after just rebuilding my '69 Camaro engine last summer...thousands on seemingly nothing much adds up quick.

His specialty is big bore race engines....and airplane engines...he's building a WRX turbo engine for his airplane as we speak. His shop rates are very reasonable. His name is Dick Burns, 952-473-1887. He's not a full service shop, so you can only drop off your parts, not the whole car. He does much of the machine work for the Lotus guys too.

Thanks Josh I'll give him a holler for sure! I may have to have him quote me on the the head swap too providing the donor one is good. It's too cold to do that outside here this time of year. I called a couple of storage places and they want $150+/mo to store car a car and do some minor work.....That's just outrageous!! I have all the tools I need 'cept for a torque wrench so all I need is a spot to store her for a few weeks or so until I get her runnin right.

The picture of the car was taken in my parent's driveway. My parents built the house in 1978. The cracks in the basement floor weren't bad after they put in carpeting. I still can't get over the fact that the house's foundation was built on a slope. To this day, you can place a can on one end of the kitchen floor and it will slowly roll to the other end. :(

I can't believe they let the guy build so many houses.

PS - Orrin Thompson also had a habit of pouring left over concrete into the cinder blocks of the foundation. Much to his dismay, the cable guy found this out the hard way when he tried to drill a hole to run a new cable line.

It has TEC3 engine mgmt.. anybody have recommendations for a local tuner familiar with such a thing?

ooooh, finding someone local to tune the TEC3 is going to be a tall order, I looked into putting it in my sc'd M3 and at the time, Vic Sias/Sias Tuning was the go to guy. I have since got rid of my M3 so I'm not sure if anything has changed.

No exact time or place yet, but it should be 4 hours of driving or so, with lunch in the middle. Last one was from 10:30 to 3.

It's open to all Euro's. Last Fall (Fall Escape Drive) we had two P-cars, my M, and a handfull of VW's. I think some of the B5 Passat boys will be joining us and a Volvo might be joining in the fun too.

hey everyone..just found this post after months of looking atg the rest of this site...i will be picking up my car from michigan any week now..it is a 325i to M3 conversion type project...im going heavy with the "go" mods first & than i will get into the "show" mods..lol..depending on $$!! II started with a $1500 1992 325i shell...& in went a 96 M3 motor, dinan stage 3 supercharger & software, dinan exhaust, M3 5-speed tranny,M3 struts, spindles,brakes, rotors, calipers,sway bars,M3 3.23 rear end with M axles,M fuel pump..uuc short shifter...M3 speedo..eibach springs...the body had some rust when i got it...so my next project is rust removal...bodykit...paint...here is how she started

But seriously, a camera if you want to immortalize the moment. We try and make sure everyone has a full tank before we leave. Usually a food stop is part of the agenda so need not worry about food unless you eat like Jabba the Hut. Oh yes, THM3 is right... eye candy never hurts :D

I know nearly all of you guys have the newer bimmers. But I'm at a standstill here due to the lack of experence with bottom-end stuff. What I would like to know is if anyone who lives near Richfield would mind taking my lil '78 320i 'round the block or so and give me their best indication of what to make from the sounds and response of my car. Takin it to the dealer is definitely not an option as my contract with GM abruptly ended without notice (damn union) so I'm back to searching for a new job. Hence, limited funds. I'm guessing part of it may be a clogged oil screen on the pump but there may be an issue with the main bearings as well. Any garage scholars out there care to take a stab at it? I'd certainly appreciate it. Timeframe is not big issue with me obviously. Anyone who might be interested PM me and I'll give ya my phone number. I'm at 494 and Penn.

Sorry, Neuwerks isn't a chatty group, but yes we are still on for this weekend.

Winter weather is something we all kinda like in that group, we just all wished it was going to be dry, and warmer for us to take out the summer cars.

All of you are welcome to come over to Neuwerks and make the place more alive if you wish! ;)

I think it's sponsored by Northstar BMW (http://www.northstarbmw.org/) , the local CCA chapter here. From what I gather it's a bunch of people meeting in Duluth and driving up the north shore together.

Last time I was up at the North Shore (last fall) I saw a Corvette drive going up when I was coming back. There must have been 50+ vettes all in a row driving together.

I'm going to email someone at Northstar and get more details.

Stock M Coupe headlights are a joke and I couldn't stand their light pattern and output.

So, I tried some HID kit (9006, I believe) in stock reflectors about a year ago. Not good! The light output was great but it was all over the place, blinding oncoming traffic. I went back to stock.

Having been inspired by a whole bunch of people who custom fit HID projectors into stock Z3 headlights, I decided to go for it and stuff 5-series HID's into Z3 headlights. The light cutoff line is now very sharp and the output is great.

However, if I could turn back time, I'd rather buy ProjectorZ's from umnitza.com and save myself a weekend. :)

a guy at my work just tweaked the bulbs and installed them on his e36, i was going to do the same but i didnt want to hack apart my zkw's. ironically i will now be doing more work to install the bi-xenons.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a very positive experience at Samaritan Tire in Minnetonka yesterday. I had them mount one tire and balance four wheels. They not only got the job done fast while I waited (about 20 minutes), but charged me about half the price I've been used to paying at Hopkins Firestone. Mounting the one tire was $10, and balancing 4 wheels was $40 for a grand total of $50. Not bad. :alright

Plus they seemed genuinely happy that I was giving them my business, something that's been lacking in my last few phone calls (was on hold for 10 minutes yesterday before deciding to go to Samaritan) and visits to the increasingly busy Hopkins Firestone. Samaritan apparently also does alignments in-house, so I'll definitely be checking them out in a month or so after I replace my shocks, springs and RTABs. They did confirm that a 4-wheel alignment would cost me $90.

One thing I forgot to ask them is whether they'll do aftermarket install work, such as swapping out my current front struts with my Koni/stock housing ones, something I know a place like Orr Autosport won't do since I didn't buy the parts from them.

Do the suspension install yourself, not too terribly difficult.

In my case, they suck a long one. They won't touch wheels with polished lips and I simply don't understand why the hell not.

They're the only ones here in MN that can repair wheels so I'm fucked.

Yeah I'm planning on it, but hey if a shop would do it for $200 worth of labor, that's on the borderline of what my time is worth. Then if something's not right, you can take it back to them. If I fu*k it up, I've got no one to blame.

I'm from Minneapolis too - so count me in this Minnesota thead. Oddly I found it by accident using the search key "Coolant Flush"... :confused

I'm in Southwest Minneapolis (city, proper - south of Lake Harriet and north of the crosstown) and new to BMW cars. I'm a mechanically inclined noob... My skills are mainly electrical and computer based. (However, I do tackle all routine maintence)

I picked up my Z3 2.8 used with ~45k miles (way under book, cheep) this winter and so far it has been fine. The only problems with it so far I have caused (it WAS flawless) ... broke the driver seatbelt guide and a few trim pieces (since fixed) during a nasty iPod custom installation. The car isn't for worship - it's a daily driver unless it is nasty out then I drive the Jeep.

For the day job I work at US Bank as a Senior Analyst in Risk/Reward Management. There are a few sharp BMWs parked in our lot - I don't know if any of the owners are on here.

Don't think any of you guys know me...still new to the driving scene. I was out of town for the recent BIR events, but I'm planning to be there this May. I've got a bit of work to do before then, though. Brake fluid flush, pick up some spare brake pads, buy a helmet...and after all is said and done, I need to install my new SSK and tranny mounts. Hopefully I can do that before the driving event takes place.

Here's a question, though: when I put my summer wheels back on, I noticed my front tires are down to about 30% tread. Should I leave them on through the driving event and then swap into a new pair right afterwards, or is it better to swap before the event? Since I'm still new, I won't be going WOT out there, and I have completely stock suspension. What do you guys think?

FYI, I was in Duluth a few weeks ago and was doing alot of back road driving in the M3 and there were a ton of Deer running around, had to stop several times during the day to let them pass. I bet we seen 100 Deer on highway 61,So just be careful when your up there driving.

Awesome they will be close to me then and I wont have traverse HW100 anymore during rush hour to try and get my car.

Anyone know if Orr has ever done a e36 328 to e46 big brake conversion? I need new brakes when the car comes out of storage in the next week or two and was thinking it was a viable option considering the dramatic change in braking for the price of basically half a big brake kit for the whole car with OEM parts.

I am going to put on new pads and flush the brake fluid. Then I will be set. If you need a helmet on the cheap. Run up 35 to the Dennis Kirk outlet. I got mine for $40 and its Snell 2000. Its an AGV, nice italian helmet.

Yeah that will be a bit weird. We do both have Hellrot M3/4's. I do not know if we are going to drive up together or seperate. Where is the best place to meet. I think that we should meet somewhere then do a bit of a drive, or photo shoot(dypwick). Whatever you guys think I do not know where you guys want to go. I can get pretty much anywhere so that is not a big deal.

97_SC_///M3, why stock exhaust? Not for your S/C'd M3 is it?

Looking to put a stock exhaust back on and see how much HP difference there is between my UUC Systems U and a stock exhaust. If there isn't much difference I may switch back to stock, since I have a baby now and sometimes the wife likes to use the M3...with the baby seat in the back :cool

i was wondering if anyone had a stock M3 exhaust that is willing to sell to me for a fair price. i dont feel like spending $500+ on an aftermarket muff.

I think Sat would work the best. That way we could all meet and take some sunset pics? if we want to. And that way I have time to wash my damn car lol.

I should be able to swing by, if I have time for a spring cleanup i might even bring out the ole '85 635csi instead of the M3. Not as fast but it sure is a fun car to drive:) so keep an eye out for either an estoril M3/4 or a black 6 slightly lowered with 16" BBS wheels.

97_SC_///M3 do you remember last year meeting that Silver M3? In that parking lot ( I think it was Kmart) that would be at least a backup meeting place. Haven't gotten anything solid from the University regulars yet...

Kmart is the place then? Is that right on University? Let me know, that meeting place sounds good to me if it is where I am thinking. Did we want to do some photo stuff?

Its not Kmart anymore, its WALMART and they are open till 9 or so, so I dunno if thats a good place to go, but we can meet there.

I've been wanting to see an Estoril in person, but a black 6 with a drop and rims sounds extremely nice too. Can't go wrong with either.

Ok soon we are heading out. I suspect we'll be there by ~ 6:30 to 7pm depending on traffic.

Damn I'm sorry I missed it, I had little man with but he wasn't havin' it....was fussin' up a storm (he's only 8 weeks old). Turned out to be a nice evening too, the pics look great. Next time I'll make sure Mom is around so in case this happens again I can still make it:)

Keep the pics coming too...love to see everyones rides. Also, if anyone's going to be out and about tomorrow maybe we can all meet for lunch somewhere around town here (Champps, Don Pablo's, etc...)

*edit* By "tomorrow" I meant today (Sunday), was still dark out when I was up feeding the boy and posting so that kind of threw me. I live around the lakes area of mpls so I'm pretty convenient to get to any side of town.

It was a great time, WAYYYY too cold though. Nice meeting all of you. I do think that we should plan for a drive next time, that would be fun.
