Anyone else excited about going to the track this weekend? The only thing that sucks is I know after this weekend I will have to think about putting the car away for the winter.

I'm not going to the track, but thanks for reminding me of the coming winter:(

Yup. I'm excited. I guess it should be pretty nice this weekend. I'm starting to put together the "track stuff" tonight so I don't forget anything. I've been doing something relatively huge on the car every night since Saturday in order to get ready for this weekend. I finally just finished putting the trunk back together due to the new RSMs. My friend took it apart for me while I took out the speakers, so it took me awhile to figure out the jigsaw puzzle. I finished once, then stared quizzically at it all when I couldn't figure out where the last piece of giant black plastic went. Alas. Finally done, but now I'm tired.

I do wish I had a tow vehicle, though. It would be nice to load everything with plenty of space instead of it all just barely fitting in there.

What's your name (PM if you like)? I can look you up when I get there. Are you going to the dinner Friday night? I haven't decided, but I won't be able to stay up late because I am really beat and will need the rest.

I am putting the new exhaust on the car tonight (UPS says its out for delivery!) and I will put the track pads and rotors on tomorrow before I leave. I think I am going to do the dinner, I need to get that email sent out.

Hey I'm new to Minnesota, I'm from California, and don't really know what I'm supposed to do for my car.
I have a 1994 530i, 5spd, with 216k miles on it.
I go to the U and will be parking in a garage that shouldn't get too cold. When I park at home it will be in a covered garage but has no insulation and will get cold.
What do I need to do for my car so that it will start up in the cold mornings?
I only have a short 4 mile commute to school.
I'm on a budget since I'm a grad student, but what should I do about tires?
I assume that I should buy winter tires or all season?

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thank you.
I've got a set of brand new Blizzaks on 15" steel rims with covers for $300. They came off of an E36, but (according to Tire Rack) they'd fit your car. If you're interested, give me an email trent@stoneblock.com

Hi,

just wanted to introduce myself as a newbie to this forum.
I bought a used 2000 323I. LOVE the handling, the look, and the fact its mine. ( After 5 years that is) However I have had it in the shop quite some time already. ALready replaced the Alternator, Waterpump (twice), got the AC recharged, and had the airbag light reset. Now the Airbag light has come on again, I think is is a faulty seatbelt sensor, I don't want to go back to the dealer since I need to pay for the reset this time. I have done some research and I have seen those airbag reset tools. I was wondering if there is another tool out there that does the airbag reset and more, like oil interval resets and engine diagnostis, don't want to buy 2 separate tools.

Thanks

Thanks a lot Bob,

I might have to take you up on that offer. Since you have the airbag reset tool I can assume you had the light come on too? I have been browsing ebay for the BMW diagnostic interface with your pc. It seems to be able to do a lot but I am not sure if that is so user friendly. Oh I have one more question mayby you know something about the power steering reservoir. it seems to be leaking from the lid? I believe there is a factory hole in it. Is this normal for the fluid to leakout of it or am I looking at a potention replacement of the power steering pump?

Are there any more meets this year or is the "driving season" over?
:-)

Again thanks a lot.

Nope. Sorry, Man. I rarely make it down there. It's about 40 minutes away from me. But you probably wouldn't want me to check it out anyway. I don't have the fine eye for details that some of these other guys do.

You know...having said that...I think Sears Imports is on Wayzata Blvd, 13000 or so. I need to have an alignment done, so I *might* be able to look at it sometime this week, depending when I head down to get this done.

If I'm the best guy available, then I'd be happy to help you out, assuming our schedules can mesh with the seller's. Now, if this is an E36, then I'm probably in pretty good shape to check it out for you. If it is anything else, then I definitely can't do much more than a cursory inspection.

Where in Kansas are you from? I lived in Olathe for 7 years when I was growing up.

I'm living in Wichita, KS but I have been to Olathe several times:) I'm looking at a 98 Z3 that is in a chevy dealer in Wayzata. It would be extremelly helpful if you could go take a look. I have no idea how it looks, they repainted the front bumper and I'm afraid it might not match the rest of the car. I have only seen one or two pictures and they are all pretty small. They are telling me it's flawless, so it would be great if you could see if there's any scratches, dings or dents. If you could tell me how it looks overall in terms of interior and exterior condition, maybe take a look on the situation of the rear subframe (It might have some cracks here and there), clutch, and engine (looking for unusual noises and stuff). The dealer is open 8:30-9:00 Mon-Thu. Any input at all would help a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me know if or when you can so I can let them know you are going. Thanks!

Arrived in the DC area today. Car ran like a champ, but once it got dark I pissed off a lot of people. Thanks to the extra weight in the trunk my hids were lighting up the sky, so I cut my first day of driving short. Today's drive was probably the most scenic I've ever seen. Yes, there are. I've done three of them this year, two at Brainerd and one at Dakota County Technical College. It's a lot of fun, but it has put me in the poor house. Now it is time to get my car paid off and buy a truck as a second driver.

Go to www.northstarbmw.org and you'll be able to see the irregularly updated website for the club. The club is, however, very well run, so don't let the website turn you away. You can join the BMWCCA by following various links at the North Star site, or by going to www.bmwcca.org

John, I think I'm gonna hold onto it in case I ever want to get the car back to stock to sell it. Not sure if you'd want it anyway; it's scuffed on the passenger side and has a small dip in it close to the driver's side foglight. I'll keep you in mind though. My immediate goal after I sell it: buy an all season car that is at least german. I am thinking I can afford an older Audi A4 Quattro. Any hot deals on those around? I dont think I can afford an E46 330XI or 325XI.. :( I want to keep the payments down monthly so I can afford housing and $90k in college loans. I pay $650 a month for the car said and done, and that doesnt include the roughly $180 a month I pay in gas. (probably more than that actually.) Even a newer car with a higher face value would be cheaper for me in the long run with better insurance, better mpg..etc. Any tips?

Definately check out the Northstar BMW CCA (http://www.northstarbmw.org) if you're looking for organized drives and driving schools @ BIR. I've been to a few of the drives in northern and southern MN, and several car control clinics, worth being a member even if just for the Roundel mag.

You asked whether anybody goes up there outside of CCA events...I know some guys who used to, but have stopped because they thought the events were not well controlled and the other drivers were trying to race each other. Bottom line: it was dangerous. In contrast, the CCA events are really well done and safe.

Which events are these? I think you are referring to AARRF. They haven't run at BIR in a while and I've been to a few of their events at St.Cloud, scary...

I personally don't go to the CCA events because I can get more track time for my money with other groups. Don't get me wrong, its a great thing for someone that is relatively new to the experience, and I've heard the instruction is very good, but there are better options out there for those that just want seat time.

I'm a CCA member and do enjoy the summer club drives.

I'm not sure. My buddies just referred to them as "open track days at BIR," so I'm not sure which organization they were under. I do trust their opinions, though...to give you a reference point, one of these guys is a very accomplished driver who attends many of the Skip Barber races/classes. I wouldn't say he's world-class, but he's a very good driver with a lot of seat time in many different cars.

If the worst of the bunch isn't at BIR any more, then perhaps it's all well and good at this point and I shouldn't nay-say the extra-CCA events. No matter what, BIR is a fast, fun track that's real close to home. It would be sad to not take advantage of it in some fashion, CCA or otherwise!

Agreed, and I cant wait for Pine Run to open...

The group that I ran with last summer was Slowpokes( http://www.slowpokes.org/ ) and its a great group, mostly comprised of P-cars, that rents the track out 2 or 3 times a season. They do have cornerworkers as well as a safety crew and ambulance on standby trackside. Not sure what the exact requirements are but I just faxed them a copy of my certificate from a 3-day Driving school I attended in Florida a couple of years ago.

The nice thing about this group is that track time is unlimited. The only time they shut it down is for lunch and breaks for the cornerworkers. Otherwise you can run as much as you want. We put on almost 400 miles in one day lasy July.

NEWS RELEASE

January 3, 2005

JD Investments to abandon Henriette site for Pine Run Motorsports Park

FOREST LAKE, Minn. - JD Investments, the Pine Run Motorsports Park
developer, today announced that it will pursue a new location for its
motorsports facility, which it planned to build on 530 acres north of
Henriette in Pine County.

The decision was made after a year of detailed work and an extensive
environmental assessment that began in January 2005, when JD Investments
announced the project to the local community. Issues related to soil
corrections, a wetland delineation and other factors led the developer
to find a new site for the project rather than pursue an Environmental
Impact Statement as required by the Pine County Board of Commissioners
in October.

A wetland delineation was required to establish or designate on-site
wetlands, but a delineation couldn't be produced despite ongoing
discussions with several regulatory agencies. It was a much-needed
starting point to establish on-site wetlands and produce a final track
layout.

The Pine Run site is currently a sod farm, which raised land use issues.
Sod farms in the metro area have been converted to useable land uses,
but regulatory agencies were hesitant to approve a motorsport facility
use at the Henriette site. The site also would have required significant
soil corrections. Soil borings revealed various levels of peat and mixed
soils, which were extensive in some areas. The developer chose to work
with those conditions if other factors could be met.

The Pine Run plans called for a quarter-mile drag strip, a 3.6-mile road
course and a 3/8-mile go-kart track, all of which would have generated a
significant amount of activity. The new facility will be downscaled to
include less activity and instead focus on showcasing a pristine road
course facility and go-kart track.

"The year-long exercise in Pine County produced overwhelming support
from residents and the business community in both Pine and Kanabec
counties," said Scott Quick, JD Investments vice president and general
manager. "We are grateful to everyone who supported our efforts, all
throughout Minnesota, and ask for their continued support as we evaluate
other sites. We're especially grateful to all our friends and supporters
in Pine County who welcomed our development and saw it as a good
business opportunity for the area. Racing enthusiasts throughout
Minnesota who have followed our project from the beginning should also
know that JD Investments is committed to constructing a motorsports
facility and our decision to move from this site has not deterred our
passion to find a new home."

JD Investments will continue to chronicle its progress on its Web site:
www.PineRunRacing.com.

Not so sure how credible the resource is, but someone that is good friends with the President of the "Bad Boys" Car Clubs (mainly old, wealthy guys that drive old muscle) have been approved to build a 1/4 strip close to the MN Highway Safety Test Track in Saint Cloud. Would be great for me and my friends here to have a dragstrip a couple miles from home. :D Then again I might start breaking shit I go very often. :stickoutt

I don't beleive the plans included a road course, but that doesn't suprise me. How many T-buckets do you see taking laps on a road course heheh. :D

I was wondering if some one knows where I can get a rim repaired around the twin cities.
The lip is a bit bend. The problem is I'm not sure how to identify the rim I have on my car.
I know its 17 inch and the closest I can find is that it looks like BMW style 42. I need to look at it again but I think it said 8Jx17 Does that mean it 8 inches wide?

Thanks

Take a picture of the wheel and post it in the wheel and tire forum. Someone will recognize it.

Yes 8J means it is 8 inches wide.

Precision Wheels Service in Hopkins should be able to fix it for around $130-$150 I think.

I just called them and they said they don't work on 2 piece rims.
If I would like to have it fixed I could try to remove all those bolts and bring the outside only. They said they have problems removing those bolts so they don't even bother. I will try to post a pic once I get my digital camera back.

I have been reading about "RimPro" I will see if they do them.
But I need to ship it to them.

Perhaps sell the rims and get new once??

Thanks for the input.

just called the dealer with the number that was on my rims. (1095342, 8JX17, IS47) It seems there are only 2 placed in the US that have 1 in stock.
But Germany has over 300 of them. I guess I should be looking for a new set of rims since they retail for 547.50. Unless I can find a used one.

It's pretty standard. Exterior is silver, interior is black leather. Nothing too special about it at all. It's a five speed, and the only option other than the winter package is a sunroof. It doesn't even have a CD player, just the cassette deck. 97,000 miles, it was owned by a woman in Wisconsin who took extremely good care of it to 88,000 miles. The guy I am buying it from was going to give it to his son, but he can't afford it while he's in college.

In case anyone's interested, the North Star BMW CCA is hosting two driving schools next weekend (Feb 11 & 12) at Dakota County Tech College (DCTC in Rosemount) Sat. is a Teen Winter Driving School and Sun. is a Winter Driving School.

For the Teen School, no CCA membership needed and the event is heavily subsidized to keep the price low ($50 for the day!) which includes classroom and individual in-car instruction.

Sunday's Winter school is open to CCA members for $100, both teen or adult. Includes classroom and in-car instruction.

We plan on holding the events; rain, snow or warm and sunny (which is entirely possible given the winter we've had so far...)

well this is the 3rd time ive done this. last year i broke 2 ribs when some douchebag t boned me. the bolsters on the seat come around you and if you get hit in the side they tend to hit your ribcage. after i broke those 2 last year i waited about 6 weeks till they felt better and went again. same damn thing happened and i rebroke them. this time they appear to be just bruised because they are getting better much faster and dont hurt nearly as bad as last year

I plan on going to MAM in April with the Missouri Valley CCA (they're running a national DEC instructor development school), then off to Blackhawk Farms the following weekend for NASA's competition licensing school (it's Easter weekend...). I plan on competing in a few NASA TT's this year and then trying to run the whole season next year and see if I can qualify for Nationals.

R.A. w/ Windy City is the following weekend in April, and I'm sure the fiance won't be happy w/ me being out three weekends in a row (AND one of the weekends being a holiday...) She already told me I couldn't go to Oktoberfast in September, 'cause it's her b-day on the Friday. What is TT license?

rcs328
02-09-2006, 10:24 AM
What is TT license?

TT = Time Trial

It's basically the step between HPDE's and full-on racing. You run in a TT run group (if the field is small, they might even combine with an HPDE 4 - which is the highest level of HPDE students) and basically every car has a transponder that tracks lap times. There's usually four 20 minute sessions during the day and the driver with the best lap time for the day in each class wins. Most of the same rules as Open Lapping apply.

THM3
02-09-2006, 10:36 AM
That is what I thought I did not know that, that type racing was around, is it only at black hawk? What is the class break down, and what if anything do you win?

rcs328
02-09-2006, 11:10 AM
That is what I thought I did not know that, that type racing was around, is it only at black hawk? What is the class break down, and what if anything do you win?

Check out NASA's website (I believe it's nasaproracing.com) then go to the NASA Midwest website - it has all the info there. It's similar to SCCA's SOLO II program.

Basically, it's not only at Blackhawk - they hold them at numerous tracks. Class breakdowns take about 10 pages of a Word.doc to outline, including calculating all the up-points for modifications. You're not guaranteed to win anything, except maybe a handshake and a slap on the back. They might end getting contingencies from sponsors (ie free tires as an example), but I wouldn't count on it.

TT's are really just another form of motorsport for people that have evolved out of HDPE's but aren't ready for the time, money and/or talent of wheel to wheel racing.

thebionicman
02-09-2006, 12:19 PM
Here is the website:

It also has the tool for calculating your class. It makes it really easy to figure out.

I have to get a few more (100) laps :eyecrazy in before I am up to the level to be in Class 4 or at least prove myself. Its a humbling experience being at the track.

TTC, you will be running with the S54s, you putting a diff in that thing?

I put a Quaife diff in it a few years back. It's got 3.23 gears (same as E36 M3).

Ideally, all the work being done right now at Orr will help it breathe more in the top end. I've got an MA Shaw ltw replica wing and a front splitter to help keep it on the track. I'm also hoping that the S54 cars will have enough mods done to take them out of TTC...

I stopped by Orr last night (your post from yesterday got me thinking about the 328 again...) and had a look at the work. It's coming together nicely :D

Any local guys interested in a Dinan Powerdyne SC kit? It's running 6psi and the internal belt and bearings were replaced last summer. I'll be taking it off within the next few weeks --- depending on how busy I am.

Thought I throw this out there and see if anyone locally might be interested. PM me if you like more details.

The asking price will probably gauge my interest? What are you looking for?

Does anyone happen to know if there would be a 1988 super eta car (325e or 528e) anywhere, I had a lead on one in brainerd that is on car-part.com, but some A$$ clowns ripped the $hit out of the motor. Now I am looking for one again. Thanks, kinda had to vent too.

$2800 and I would need to swap DME since the one I have already has AA custom software on it as well as the crank pulley.

Can you swap DME's? I was just discussing swapping mine and learned that you'll have problems with the EWS system - that the ignition system won't recognize the EWS chip in the original keys after swapping DME's. Something you may want to research a little further...?

Yes, I'm aware of what needs to happen if the DME is swap. DME will have to be realign so the EWS will work properly. This is something the Dealer or Orr can do.

I also recall a manual override behind the glove box involving some wires. :)

Guess who is going to the 12 hours of Sebring in March? THIS GUY!
I think there will be a lot better cars there (ferrari and others) than when I went to Road America. It will be fun to see it on a different track. too bad BMW won't be there according to their site....
wooo hoooo!
