Nice to see you made it to bfc.com :buttrock .
Unfortunately at my place plants get garage priority over the M3 :( . I tried to run out and get a pic of the snow coming down on the car, but as soon as I got out there it was only raining. Would've been a nice photo op with the contrast between the white snow, green grass and red M3.

Anybody interested in putting their car on the dyno? I would like to set something up at Elite Autosport in Minneapolis. They have a group rate of $50 for 2 pulls with a minimum of 5 cars, a savings of $20 per car. I have used these guys on 2 different occasions and they know how to strap our cars down without bending trailing arms(unlike somebody else in town).

Most likely will be a Saturday, but I will have to call and confirm. Myself and Bluntheadtrauma are going so we only need 3 more to make it happen. However, the more the merrier...

Ok, The dyno day is set for Saturday, May 21st at 11am. We need a minimum of 5, so let me know if you are going to do this. These guys are not normally open on Saturday, so they are coming in just for us. If you think you can make it, but your not sure, DON'T COMMIT! I dont want to tell the guy we are going to have 10 cars and only 5 show up.

You have until May 13th at 3pm to commit to this. At that time I will call Elite and confirm with the number of cars. Again, these guys are great to deal with.

Some of the modifications I've done to my '99 M3 are as follows:

Active Autowerke 12 lb. flywheel
Active Autowerke unsprung clutch disk
Rebuilt Sachs pressure plate
Aquamist water/alcohol injection
BMW X-Brace
JTD underpanel
Koni struts/shocks

I know this has been asked a few times before, once by me too, but today I found out about a local shop who repairs all kinds of wheels, unlike Precision Wheels in Hopkins. Here's the link to their website:

They are pretty expensive since I inquired about repairing my polished lips and they said it'd cost approximately $275 a piece

Ordered some black "newer style" Kidneys for the M3, and a new headunit because my other one does not play.

I have just gotten my 4th ticket for window tint so I have removed the front window tint..but I have a major issue. The tint in the rear windows is of sub-par quality, and I have a very bad feelingg that the top layer will come off fine, but the entire adhesive layer will not... Now I have the defrost strips and if Im not mistaken, there is probably an FM antenna? Well, there's no chance I'll be able to do this myself without ruiningn that stuff. Anybody have experience or know a place that does?

Keep in mind I will be replacing this tint with 50% all around, to be legal, of course.

Dang, 4 tickets? What area are you in? I'm in circle pines and although the cops are always giving me the evil eye some something, never had an issue with tint. I had 20% on a honda 6 years ago, 37% on an E36 for the past 4, and now have 22% on my E46.

Btw, I have really dark tint on my rear windows and the last cop didnt even have a light meter to check.. And it needs a window that can be "rolled" down. Therefor, can he ticket me for tinted windows in the rear if he can NOT check them? Or wil he say "you need stickers to verify their %". I am so sick of it! I can't wait to see Mr. Blad tires tear off his old ones for new toyos.

as to Sunday Evening's festivites:
We got a F250 V10 stuck about 4 times just trying to get Hittles 4 runner out...and once we got back to where his SUV was sinking in the swamp...we could not even get it out. had to get some one that did professional offroading and had a custom Toyota with a huge winch to get him out...and even then he had trouble.
you can hear me and tanner on the video tape saying "no...don't do it...you're gonna roll it....oh shit! and then we make it down just to get into some deep shit.

I did my RTAB's last weekend so I'm taking my car to Samaritan Tire for a 4-wheel alignment today, after reading some recommendations here.

I had them mount and balance some tires for me about a month ago and they did a great job, did it quickly and for half the price of Hopkins Firestone (who put me on hold for so long I went to Samaritan this time out of frustration!). So, I figured I'd give Samaritan a shot at the alignment too.

I'll let you know how it goes. I feel like I got the rear toe back to about where it was before I did the install, since it doesn't pull or track badly but who knows.

They seemed to do a good job, but my alignment wasn't really out beforehand so I don't have anything to compare it to. I really just wanted to get it checked over so my tires didn't wear out prematurely after all the suspension mods I've done lately.

Cost was $90 for a 4-wheel alignment. They also do a nice job mounting and balancing tires, in my opinion.

I'll tell you what isn't going on....speeding....because tonight I got pulled for supposidly a 75 in a 55 ( I know I wasn't going that fast!) and I swear to God...Officer Farva pulled me over....then I go to whip out my Insurance card from my wallet feelin all slick, and i read 4-28-05....and I'm like fuck! so I open the glove box and pull out seriously like 7 insurnace cards....all from previous years...so he is like damnit...just give me your drivers license and he says "you're looking at about 200 dollars here"
He comes back and says "well between the 200 for speeding and the 150 for expired insurance I'd say you are havin a pretty expensive night. So he hands me my WARNING THANK GOD....and I thank him profusely. I talk to him a bit about what band of radar he was shooting and then he says "well..have a good night and try and keep this thing under 100...ha ha ha (he laughs)" I was like, "What does that mean" jokingly and he just says...have a good night...and laughs to himself and says have a goodnight. (I was driving my 87' 240 Volvo Wagon chic magnet) I can't believe A: he gave me a warning and B: made fun of a perfectly nice car...WTF...

good story...just thoguht I'd share

Anyone else go to BIR this past weekend? Pictures will eventually be up at momentumphoto.net, so we'll see how things look once they are up.

What an incredible time, though! Finally using the car for what it was made to do instead of posing with it around town (as fun as posing is...). Absolutely incredible...feeling the weight transfer from side to side in turns 7 and 8, which sets you up just right for turn 9...wow. I'll do it again in a heartbeat.

I went from being passed by everyone to passing many people by the end of the weekend. What a great experience.

My car does have one really quiet funny noise now that I've never heard before on it, which I may need to get looked at. It's a common sound, though...I hear it on old beater cars all the time. Hopefully I didn't do something too expensive.

Is anyone planning on going down to visit the Iowa chapter BMWCCA for Mid America? I might go, but I should buy some track wheels and tires if I do.

And I need to get rid of that noise.

I was there. What a freakin blast! I am still trying to decide on the Mid America event. That is a six hour drive from here. I think I might be able to make sales calls on my way down to shorten things up a bit.

As was stated, it sure was nice to put the car out where it belongs. I am amazed at how fast this car is.

I think I might have to get track wheels and tires. Hawk Blue brake dust and rain don't combine well. I can't get the dust (ie metal) off of my wheels. I tryed to hard in one spot and took the finish off. Now I have to either get my wheels refinished or use those wheels for the track and get a nice set of 18"s for the car.

I think that's your best option, right there. Sorry to hear that. I don't think it's worth it to get the wheels refinished. The 18's look better on the stock suspensions in my opinion.

I was running the Axxis Ultimates in front since I'm a beginner, which seemed to work fairly well, though they took about half a lap to get to full stopping power. I'll swap them back out in favor of the OEM ones for being around town. I don't think anything beats OEM for in-town driving.

Thankfully, the ultimates don't have bad brake dust.

Alright guys,

We are on for Saturday at 11am. I was thinking of meeting somewhere before hand because it can be kind of tricky to find. I drove past the place like 3 times the first time I went before I realized where it was.

I was thinking of meeting in the parking lot of Menard's in St Louis Park on the north side of 394 and just east of Louisiana. Just get off on Louisiana and go north to the first light and take a right. Cant remember the street name but it is the frontage road and Saturn of Golden Valley is on the corner.

I will be there between around 10am and leaving at 10:30 to head over to Elite.

Here's the list:

If anyone else would like to go, or have a freind that would like to go, it's not for just BMW's. They can do anything but all wheel drive cars. Just meet us at the above location on Saturday morning. The more the merrier...

See you guys on Saturday!

DYNORUN.001 Max POWER= 279.8 Max TORQUE= 235.0
DYNORUN.002 Max POWER= 273.4 Max TORQUE= 233.2

Damn, I got pulled over for no front plate and tint a few minutes ago :(

I bet I know 4 guys who have been pulled over in the past month for window tint violations.

They are really cracking down on the little things. Must be looking for easy fee revenue and quotas. There was an article about the licence plates in the StarTrib the other week. I took the clear plastic covers off my plates so the authorities don't think it was some sort of a radar game. I know someone who got pulled over because his tabs weren't on the plates exactly right. And another that took his front plate off because he has an Intercooler and it NEEDS the air. He even had the plate in the car - not good enough. I'm waiting for MN to come out with plates to bolt to be doors of the car. Then we can have 4...

I had to pull the tint off my Grand Cherokee after a scene. I was driving the speed limit not running lights and this guy pulled a U and got right on my tail. Followed me for about 5 blocks (while he ran a NCIC check I'd bet on my plates and it came back clean). I got pulled over on 6th and Hennepin. The tint was "marginal" but was about 2% over according to his pocket tint-o-meter so they gave me the ticket. I even had the recepit in the glove box that showed it was legal for MN. The fun thing was the cop (after I showed him my recepit) said "and your bug guard is too dark". I told him "It is OEM" and shut my mouth. It even has the Chrysler Pentagon on it. I have no idea how a bug guard you can't even see when driving impares the Jeep... He then got huffy and proceeded to check the back windows (also OEM). Then harassed me if I had been drinking (it was 8pm on a weekend - as if I'm that stupid to drink and then go drive down hennepin with 4 people in the car) :confused He then harassed the passengers. Bottom line, he gave me a ticket - I took the tint off cause I didn't want to get harassed anymore, took it to the judge with my recepit showing it was LEGAL FOR MN and a scrap of the old tint - she threw out the ticket but mentioned it was "probably was wise to remove it to avoid future confrontation". It is better than a repeat of the rookie cop scene.

(edit) Most important: LEAVE your seat belt ON until the cop gets to the window. I took mine off right when I stopped to get my wallet out. When he got to the window he was going to give me a ticket for that too. Except a passenger said "he took it off right when you pulled him over after he stopped to get his wallet out". I've been in a 35mph front collision - the belts work - I wear them.

Bottom line. Check all your equipment (lights and such) and play the game. Otherwise, you will get jacked by the man.

Wow, now that guy sounds like an A-hole. 2% over sounds like could be within his equipment's margin of error. While he's giving you that ticket, there's probably drug exchanges happening down the block.
I suppose I need to start playing the game. My car came from Arizona and I believe the tint and no front plate were legal there....MN laws suck. It's not much fun driving when you are worried you could be pulled over at any time. I had assumed that cops would overlook this minor stuff unless you were pulled over for doing something stupid.

What's the fine for not having a front plate these days? I've been running both M3's without the front plate for some time now (few years) and have yet to get a ticket. Nearly got pulled over today tho - officer pulled a 180 and followed me on my bumper for a few blocks. I wasn't speeding so I'm pretty sure he decided to follow me because of the front plate. I thought I was nailed. Can't complain about it - I know I'm suppose to have the front plate on and I still couldn't complain if he decided to write me a ticket. Has anyone been pulled over and ticketed for *only* not having a front plate? Seems that most officers don't care or else I would have accumulated a pile of tickets by now.

No front plate on this car. Never been pulled over in the two years I've had it. I drive somewhat conservatively though, picking my moments. I don't really trust my V1.

Ffroggs
06-01-2005, 12:43 AM
I've got a buddy who was pulled over TWICE specifically for not having a front plate. Well, that's not entirely accurate. He was parked on a city street and had a pretty ticket stuffed under his wipers, and then one time he was pulled over for it. No other tickets...just the one.

But Sammyzuko hit it on the head. It's no fun driving when you feel like you're being watched all the time and can get pulled over in an instant. That's why I put my front plate back on. As tacky as it looks, I feel tremendously more comfortable with it there.

But I'm no speed demon, either. My one ticket on 94 (for going 67 in a 55...sue me...I thought 94 was 65mph) was enough to convince me that the V1 isn't perfect. The laser got me right quick. With three cops running a speed trap, what are you going to do? Anyway, it's a lot more fun using the car at the track, I've found. Now I just need to support the habit. I wonder if I can sell my dog...

Inspection II ran about $500+ to $600+ in PA a couple of years ago, not sure how much it is now... should not be too much more, but your location maybe different.

If you want to DIY, check out http://www.bimmerzone.com/inspection.htm
that can get you off to a start.

Good luck :)

Well, my 2 week warning to "fix" my missing front license plate just expired and you guessed it, I was pulled over again today. This time it's costing me $$. I was simply flowing with traffic, windows down, girl by my side when he came after me. Seems like they're really cracking down now, because I was never bothered until 2 weeks ago. You could buy a Peake tool:

Peake SRS reset tool (http://www.peakeresearch.com/srstool.htm)

but it costs $129.99 plus shipping. If you're going to be resetting the airbag light more than once (not sure why you would), then this is the way to go. I bought the Peake FCX which resets the oilservice lights and reads the check engine codes.

$50 doesn't sound too bad compared to that.

I got a airbag resest tool too, and anyone can use it if they want.

By the way people, I have bought an M3, the 328i is done with.

I need someone too drive it who knows about M3, because I get this vibration in idle and even more when the A/C is on. I can't figure out why it does it.

Spark plugs are new iridium
Intake is clean
oils are all changed
ran a fuel cleaner this week in the tank

I also get this clunk noises when removing my foot off the clutch from changing gears.

If anyone who knows alot about M's please look at it, I can drive it to their house or whatever. I rather not go to the dealer and get rapped.

I believe a noise when the clutch is depressed means the release bearing needs replacing. A noise when the clutch is released may mean a problem inside the transmission.

Orr Autosport is the only independent BMW shop in town that I know of, or you could also go to the big bad dealership (Motorwerks BMW). I have never had service done at either place so I can't comment on either.

You can do a lot of maintainence yourself if you're into that sort of thing. They're really just like any other car. Oil changes are actually easier on BMW's than most cars because the oil filter is removed from the topside of the engine.

As for the side skirts, I'd assume any body shop could to it.

Have fun with it!

It has a Rieger front lip and some other mods.. so I am willing to bet the owner installed a lightweight flywheel. I have the M5 clutch w/ the 8.5lb flywheel that is the quietest on the market and it still rattles when I remove my foot from the clutch. You get used to that..

By the way the 8.5lb flywheel isnt as radical as it sounds, the M5 clutch assembly is heavy enough to make everything work out to around 11lbs.

I've had P&L automotive in Edina do a few of my vehicles, and have been happy with their work. However, Gjerde's in Savage was better, probably had half as much glass showing (tinted almost right up to the edge). Real friendly too. Either of those shops will do a good job.

I had the clutch replaced on my 97 M3 by Orr Autosport (http://www.orrautosport.com) yesterday.

The release bearing was badly worn at 95k miles (and quite a bit before but I was milking it!), and would make a grinding sound whenever I pushed the clutch pedal in. Also the engagement point was really close to the floor.

Now it's smooth like butter! And the clutch is completely silent. I mean, even when I had the windows down yesterday evening driving home, it's like the clutch release bearing isn't even there it's so quiet. The engagement point was a lot higher and took a bit of getting used to again.

Total cost was about $1800 parts and labor. Sounds like a lot, but I looked online and this was one time there wasn't too much in the way of parts markup. The flywheel in particular is really pricey anywhere you go. And the labor required to get to everything is extensive for a clutch job.

I also had the flex disc replaced at the same time since I figured they were in there working on the transmission area anyway. That was about an additional $100 parts and labor on top of the clutch R&R. First and second gear seem a lot smoother now, not sure if that's the new clutch or the guibo but either way it's nice. Feels like new!

Anyway that's another vote for Orr doing nice work at a fair price. Sears quoted me around $2300 to do the clutch. I didn't even call Motorwerks because I still have a grudge against them. Only other guy I called quoted me around $1900. He was someone's recommended independent mechanic guy who works on BMW's. At least with Orr you know BMW's are all they do, and they see plenty of E36 M3's.

Cool. I was going to do my clutch replacement this weekend but I am having serious doubts on whether or not I really need to. It doesn't work "bad", sometimes if I push it hard it will slip but to be honest I havent had it slip in a long time. I have the clutch here just waiting but I dont want to do it prematurely.

I should get my car back on Monday or Tuesday from a new upgraded clutch and lightweight flywheel. Its been over a month since I've driven my car. I never had any noises coming from the clutch, but I couldn't push the car very hard at all and barely had to touch the clutch to shift. BTW it was having some other things worked on so it that is why it has been so long.

Spotted a Silver E36 as I was getting onto 494 at France today at Noon. It was lowered and had tinted tails, exhaust and probably some other stuff. I was in my black, lowered Audi, but I got the peace sign.. gave him the thumbs up. Anybody from here?

Here’s the deal, I recently filled for bankruptcy and I have decided to surrender my car back to BMW. I bought the car with Halogens and retro fitted it with HID’s that include angel eyes. If anyone with an E39 that has Halogens would be interested in exchanging headlamps, I’ll sell both the HID’s for $500 minus any cost it would take to swap the headlamps, if the buyer doesn’t have the ability to do it themselves.

The cheapest I’ve seen these lights retail for is $600 a piece and if anyone is interested, they can have them both for $500 as long as they have factory halogens to exhange and are willing to cover any costs of swapping the headlamps.

I also have a six disc trunk mount CD player that was purchased last December that I will sell for $150.

If anyone is interested, send me a private message and we can go from there.

I know its not the same flavor as most of you are used to, but Car Craft is this weekend Saturday and Sunday and Ive made it there every year for about 5 years.

I plan on going and if a few people wanted to join me I would 'show' my car, enter it so we could have a little group of Bimmers. I know you guys want to! If anybody wants to show, or just go to spectate, or meet up afterwards for the big University cruise / chill out post here and we'll have a rendezvous point.

Hey Guys, I just got an e-mail invitation from BMW to do the "Ultimate Driving Experience" in the E90 330i at the NSC in Blaine. :buttrock Anyone else get this? I did one in Sept. 03 at Canterbury in the E46 330i and it was awesome!

It was pretty much a free autocross class, with a bunch of laps beating up a new BMW :)

It is August 12th-14th. Better sign up soon as it is filling up fast. I will be autocrossing at 5:30 on the 14th. Also signed up to drive the 330 and the Z4. The 645 convertible was already completely signed up for.

BTW I didnt expect to see to many BMW's up here but hey, theres like 3 in town!!! I was amazed! :) THREE!!
