View Full Version : Door closing sounds bad...
wirewizz 10-29-2007, 11:59 AM I'd heard that the sound made by the door closing was bad, so I wasn't concerned when my '04 sounded the same. Has anyone discovered a way to give the doors a more solid sound? I thought about adding some rubber in the right place, but I thought I would check with others before I started to try to fix it. I"m sorta staying in a hotel right now anyway since the Slide Fire in SoCal forced me to evacuate my home. I'm confident at this point that the house is OK. Let me know if there is a cure...

roh92cp 10-29-2007, 01:14 PM Well I have heard that some use a sound shield like door matt, but personaly I think the noise comes from the plastic door lache on the door itself. I have not found a way yet, but I'm still looking at improving the door sound too.
BimmerZealot 10-29-2007, 04:31 PM I notice it the most when my windows are down. It makes the door sound very hollow and cheap. Not sure any fixes for it, but i've definitely noticed it as well.
AndyZ 10-29-2007, 05:51 PM IIRC - there was a post here about putting some extra insulation in the door to make it sound better??

roseman 10-29-2007, 06:03 PM I try not to slam the door. When I close it with just enough force to get it all the way closed,it doesn't sound so cheap.
I don't notice except when the OL is pissed. GH
roh92cp 10-30-2007, 07:22 AM It seems BMW could have put more thought into this. I cringe everytime a friend gets in the car and they close the door.
dtothepowerofp 10-30-2007, 09:07 AM I welded my doors shut so everyone must climb in and out of the windows. I also painted it orange and put an "01" on the doors. Problem solved. :)
anpmech 10-30-2007, 09:11 AM What did they do to fix this? I know my car door slams shut like a bank vault door and sounds nice. Maybe the latch and needed door parts from an 06+ will fit on the previous models.

:werd: Its almost like the window is rattling against the door, but it doesnt get scratched.

I try, but its kinda hard to close the door softly since it is so long. :(

Did you do the confederate rag top also?

I still think the rattle sound comes from the plastic door latch. Does the 06 have plastic or metal latch in the door.
wirewizz 10-30-2007, 11:17 AM Thanks all, it's nice to know I'm not alone...

It's metal on mine. I'll post a picture of it this week.

Hmmm... I might be on to something here. Metal/plastic.
Zed4Driver 10-30-2007, 10:09 PM i saw a fix for it on the old z4um....i had a 2003 and 2004 z4 and both has the "tingy" door closing sound however my 2006 does not have the same sound as the previous they sound more solid.
I recently did some sound attenuation/deadening to the insides of the doors on my '07 Coupe. I used Raamaudio material, which is much like Dynamax.(www.raaamaudio.com (http://www.raaamaudio.com)) It did not make a huge difference. BMW uses a closed-sell molded foam liner to cover the metal door's inner panel, which in itself does a nice job of sound attenuation. I covered the inside of the door with Raamaudio material, and layered closed-cell foam over the Raamaudio. Total weight gain per door was less than 10 lb.
Note, I have a coupe and the doors are rarely closed with the windows rolled down. I am thinking that the window track in your door might be loose, which would be more noticeable with the window rolled down. Check to see if there is any difference between the driver and passenger door sounds. If they both sound the same, perhaps it is a design problem rather than a maintenance problem.
If you decide to remove your door panels, there are a couple of threads illustrating how to do this. If you are trying to get behind the molded foam covering the inner door, I recommend not trying to lift the foam off its glued borders as it will easily tear. Rather use a very sharp knife/razor and cut the foam around the inside of the glue line. When done, I taped it with "Race Tape" aka "100 mph tape" or "green tape".
Kev50027 10-31-2007, 05:59 PM Interestingly enough, I added a brushed metal trunk piece that makes it easier to close the Z4 trunk (because it's almost impossible to do so without touching the paint). Anyway, it totally changed the sound of the trunk. It sounds much more substantial now.
The doors of my '05 still sound pretty cheap though, even compared to my old '00 Z3 and my brothers '93 325is.
I have noticed that EVERYONE asks if they broke the door, because they hear the window pop up when the door shuts to make a better seal. The fact that people always asks bugs me, but I kinda like it. They've been doing that for a LONG time, (it's even on my bro's car), but for some reason they skipped the Z3.

I also thought about adding the "tab" to the trunk lid, but didn't. There are two ways to close the trunk without gettingfinger prints on the top.
1. To the left of the trunk's latch is a handle indentation. Using my right (or left) hand with palm facing up, my fingers grab onto the leading edge of the indentation and with a quick downward motion, I pull the trunk closed. That is, with upturned fingers placed in the indentation, quickly pull down to impart momentum that will close the trunk lid.
2. Put your finger tips/nails on top of the BMW roundel and close.
