View Full Version : He asked for it....
So it was about 1am and I had no place to go. It was a beautiful, warm Chicago summer night. I was sitting at a light enjoying the weather...didn't even have the radio on. Some guy who thought he was hot crap and his tag-along sidekick in the front seat pull up next to me at the red light. Even though I did not look over at them, I could see that they were practically hanging out of the window looking at me. The light turns green and this guy is on it all the way through first and second. I size up his car as he tries to make his best showing from the light. He is driving a brand new STS and still has the dealer paper plates on it. I am sure he picked it up that day and was out thinking he was going to show off.
I slowly pull up to the next light and the guy leans out and asks what I had under the hood. I look over with a timid little smile and say, "It's just a little six-cylinder." He friend pipes up immediately and says, "OH, he's gonna to SMOKE YOU!" My natural reaction was to laugh uncontrollably and slowly slip it into first. I look over and say, "Look, I don't want to embarrass you in your moms Caddy, but honestly, you don't have a chance." He gets all pissed off and stops looking at me and starts watching the light...revving in his best attempt at intimidation. The light turns green and by the time he heard the beautiful whistle of the supercharger it was too late. Just because I don't have stickers and badges all over my car, doesn't mean I don't have 30 grand in upgrades under the hood. When he pulled up at the next light, he had the windows rolled up and didn't even bother looking at me. What a dumbass...
540Rob 07-18-2001, 01:57 PM So what do you have?
JamesM3M5 07-18-2001, 02:33 PM Awesome story for your first post here. Good kill! :D
So, are you going to be an enigma, or are you going to tell us what you have, what's under the hood, etc. I suppose you're from Chicago. Just being nosy, sorry. ;)
Cheers!

jy630 07-18-2001, 02:36 PM Nice story! But you can't leave us hanging...what do you have?
I have a 1997 M3/2. Cosmos black with black leather. Looks totally stock from the outside except for the BBS RKs and the black windows. I am running Dinan SC, Dinan Stage 2 software, Dinan mass air, SS headers and Tri-Flow exhaust, Turner lightweight clutch, Dinan Stage 3 suspension among other things. It is really pretty quiet at idle. Exhaust is throaty, but not too loud unless you really get on it. The exhaust is just enough to mask the whistle of the SC unless it echoes off of something. Looks stock from the outside...no stickers, no huge tailpipes. A real sleeper.
mr happy 07-18-2001, 04:00 PM who are u kidding. BMW is hard to be a sleeper. most peeps just think all BMW are fast. nice kill though
Canatro 07-18-2001, 05:41 PM awesome, and the story was good too.
Ben FR 07-18-2001, 06:19 PM good story. if and when I supercharge my car, I would definitely keep my car on a low profile. post some pics if you get a chance.

nodemgr 07-18-2001, 07:38 PM Great story Jeff. You don't happen to be out in the NW burbs do you? I see a car matching that description sometimes.
Stylin 07-19-2001, 03:08 AM Damn ur car must MOVE!!! I love it..:p Great story as well.. pls join us more often and let us know about ur car.. :)
ChrisFL 07-19-2001, 10:37 AM Great story Jeff. Good way to start out your postings here! Your car sounds very nice. If you can, I'm sure we'd all like to see some picstures of it!
Most people I have come across know BMWs are fast, but think their car is faster...obviously this guy thought the same. And he never would have guessed the car wasn't stock.
I actually live in the loop, but I am all over...go to Schaumburg and Algonquin (sp?) a lot...also up on the north shore. Have friends all over. If you think you have seen me in the NW burbs, I have a Patrick temp plate on the back just to fill the hole until I get my plates. It is registered out of state and they are taking FOREVER to send them to me. If you ever see me, stop me. I always have time to get ice cream and talk or something. I have only one picture of it so far and it really isn't very good. I will take a few more though and post them. : )
ICWIG 07-19-2001, 02:42 PM Good kill.
Sounds like you have a nice BMW sleeper their!
gerry_miranda 07-19-2001, 02:44 PM So your in Chicago...who do you get to work on your Dinan car? I did not think Patrick was Modification friendly......
The dealership itself is not exaclty modification friendly, but some of the mechanics and service advisors are. Not only do some of the mechanics race competitively, they race the dealer owned cars that always have their pictures in the Tire Rack.com ads. There are a few people there that know what they are doing for general work and good repair. All of the serious mods were done at Midwest Motorsport though...they are extremely technical and build some very impressive race cars. They are by far the best in the area. Only problem is, they are only open during the week until like 5 or 5:30 and not open at all on the weekends.
Filip75 07-19-2001, 05:30 PM sweet story, man. Keep it up.
nodemgr 07-19-2001, 05:35 PM Cool, will do Jeff.

Knauz is an authorized Dinan dealer.
Knauz is a Dinan service center, but honestly they could not be less helpful. From their sales staff to their service dept. I have never had a worse excperience at a BMW dealer.
What annoyed me most was the salesman that would not give me the time of day when I was looking at an 850csi on the showroom floor. I am sure he assumed I was some bratty kid that I was not interested/could not afford the car. These are exactly the salesman that give BMW a bad name and lose buyers to Lexus or others. I would have driven home in that 850 right then, but because he was so annoyed that I was looking in the window, I got in my 750iL and drove away...He is the one that lost the 60 grand sale. What a shame.

Yeah, I agree all the dealers on the North Shore are pretty much ass holes, but whose decently close to me that will do a decent job on aftermarket part installation? Places like Midwest Motorsport are honestly too far away, (I'm in Highland Park).
