its about time to do another drive. Since it was brought up about doing a drive through KoleKole Pass I said I would get this drive set up with the help of Jason of course. I was wondering who all is still interested in this. I was looking at Nov 17th or 18th. This will give me plenty of time to coordinate everything get info from the MP station as to what paperwork those without a vehicle pass and ID card will need which I am pretty sure is just your insurance card, registration, and drivers liscense. so who is all in? Now remember this will not really be a speed run as we did previously however its still a nice drive lots of curves, great scenery and of course great friends.

I have to agree with Ed so what would be a good day that everyone could make it. 17th and 18th are just a suggestion. Saturdays are hard for me as thats my wifes day off so thats the day we go out and do things together.

@ Vidal...close shop for the day..

@ beastie what day would work for you?

@ gsn794 when do you leave and when do you return?

@ ben you can come to Laie Point with us, dont want you to feel left out.

@ Gary I will talk to Jason let me know what day you want to take the cruise.

I tried to get up through there earlier today. The MP at the gate, Wainai (spelling?) said that it was closed to all personnel not actively assigned to the satellite tracking facility due to fire hazard. Think we can get around that?

Thrlls...only if on a Saturday, or after 10:30 AM or finish before 8:30 AM on Sunday, and not when there is autox...sheesh! Is that demanding enough or what!!
If we come out on the Waianae side, would an evening run be good to catch a nice Sunset?

MRFLEX

Brenden,

You need to watch the count I am not sure how many cars they will let in with only you and Jason as sponsors.

On the date, it is what is good for you and Jason don't worry about the rest of us. If you have plans with your wife on Saturdays then make it on a Sunday, those who really want to go will find the way or time to make it.

On the Laie Point drive, I think you should bring your wife on that drive.

Not sure if the drive's been capped, but I can probably make it.

If there's a mid-drive or post-drive stop/picnic planned, I can take the 110 and toss coolers & a grill, etc., in the back.

If it ends on the Waianae coast, maybe someone can get access to Rest Camp?

Sorry I had to bring up the point that there is a ratio of sponsors per military person. I didn't want to see someone get turned away at the last minute.

Cal, If Ben (Air Force) got turned away you being in the Navy might not work with the Army.

Kunu
10-29-2007, 02:32 PM
Gary I dont think the ratio is a problem as for the MP turning Ben away thats the Navy side not Army. We have Jason, myself, Ben, Calvin, gene and Kaliimc. There are also a few other people who are interested and would like to attend the next cruise which are military So I believe we have plenty of folks to help get others on post. I will post details later this afternoon.
How many folks would be interested in a BBQ after the cruise? and I was looking at mid morning for the cruise.

I'm up for the cruise. Always wanted to see what's up there.

If a BBQ comes together, I'd switch vehicles and take the truck. if not, I'll take the M3 and hit Popeye's on the way to the meet-up point.

I am interested in the BBQ.

So I did all my running around today, stopped at MP station waste of time they couldnt answer my questions. I stopped at the Lyman Gate the guards who issue the passes said that I didnt need to sponsor anyone. You must have the following documents with you to get on post. Drivers Licsense, proof of insurance, registration for car. I drive up to KoleKole pass today the guard at the top said that its open 7 days a week from 0530 to 1730. I drove it today and its just over 8 miles from one side to the other. There is only one stop at the top that you can take pictures from. So it looks like this is definately a go and we will not run into any snags.

10-29-2007, 09:51 PM
SWEET! Can't wait! Can you tell me how to get there from the Schofield side? I would love to take the Duc up there!

And on a side note, Alex and I will be leaving the island on Thursday and will be gone between one to two weeks. Had a family issue come up and we need to get back home...

Kunu
10-29-2007, 10:36 PM
sorry about the family issue thats not good have a safe trip.

To get there on the schofield side Take H2 till it ends then hang a right on Kunia it will be the second light. Stay in the right hand line. the gate is on the right. Once you enter the gate you will go straight till you come to the 3rd 4-way light turn right that will be KoleKole rd. Follow that road straight do not turn its going to go along post HQ and parade field on left, PX and commissary on the right. then housing on each side. then there will be a shoppette on the right keep going straight then there will be training areas on each side of the road. thats the start of the pass. It will start to go up hill and curves well all different ways.I thought you were behind me this afternoon there was a white S2000 speeding up behind me then I will speed up and he would too. I finally pulled over at the top and it wasnt you. Its really easy to get there from the Main gate. Again have a safe trip home!

Paul arent you the 1SG. you can do as you wish drill or no drill Looking to hit the pass around 1100-1200

Sunday 18 Nov 1000AM Waipio Gentry Shopping Center
We can start there head up through Wahiawa down and do a speed run those who do not want to do a speed run can stay to the rear of the group(same as last time) then turn left head up to the Lyman gate get everyone on post then do the KoleKole Pass cruise (best of both worlds). Then out to Wainaie (spelt wrong) for a BBQ

Yes I am the 1SG, but I don't play it like that. My troops are depending on me and my Commander would not appreciate it. I could fudge the story a bit but that's not my style either. :(:D I'm the type that has to be half dead to not show up for work, it sucks, but that's how God made me.

Probably the best would be getting some Tri Tips just salt and pepper them to keep things simple. Need to know how many people so we know how much meat to get and if kids are coming hot dogs. Or we can do a Cosco hamburger patties and hot dogs.

Other items needed would be the starch, rice and or potatoes

thats to easy I got it covered Gary. Hopefully you can make the drive. ( Tell the wife to call in sick Come out after your daughters Softball game!!)

I called the military reservation site. No issue. The park opens at 0900hrs 9AM for those who are non military. I just go up show my ID and we pick the best tables/ site that are not close to the cabins. It is now called Pililaau Army Recreation Center. Also for those who are non military its not a issue as we will have military folks among us. So we are set for the BBQ!!!!!

Brenden,

Still trying to figure things out on my end. Don't want to miss this drive.

We still need to know who is going to the bbq and what is needed, things like charcoal, the meats, starch etc. unless you want to go simple with hamburgers and hotdogs with buns.

I am not sure how many grills are out there as I have never been there. I think that it may be a good idea to bring the grill anyway Pat and if we do not need to use it we wont have too. Can you also bring the big tent not sure about shade either.

Items I think that are still needed are as follows: ( please add if you think of something else)

Charcoal/ lighter fluid

I can bring two chimney starters. This eliminates the need for lighter fluid. I also have a 18" webber. I'll have to see if it fits in my trunk.
If it's beachfront or windy we will need a LOT of charcoal. I can be the designated cook if no one wants to slave. lol

Okay for those that are saying that they are going on the drive and the BBQ we need to know what you are going to be bringing to the BBQ.

Need to hear from everyone who has not posted what they are bringing. Vexed/Richard is covered by me on the meats as he is on the mainland.

Flex/Richard: Tri Tip Steaks will season prior to bringing so it will be ready to cook.

Anyone want to chip in let me know the more people willing to chip in the more meat and hotdogs for everyone.

Still need:

Bottle Waters
Sodas
Charcoal
Rice
Potatoes

Last count 17 cars with about 25 people so we need to hear from quite a bit of people.

Pat, are you going to have ice chests. If so I will pick up a case of water at the store there as well as bring some diet soda. I will probably bring some chicken for the BBQ. Dorothy will make Potato Salad. There is a well stocked Foodland or something there at Gentry so if we need some extra stuff we can get it there. Did we get the answer on the grills, are they there or do we need to bring some?

Brenden,

I will be going to Costco on Saturday to get the meat that way it will be fresh.
Our church has a men's breakfast every 2nd Saturday, and we have steak & eggs...with some starches, but the steaks are great and the Pastor that does this gets it from this place called Richards Meat...I think. It is located on the side street off of Dillingham across HCC just past the old Dodge dealership heading up Mauka. It must be cheap because we only pay $5 a head for a steak & egg breakfast and there's always left overs for seconds.
However, I believe Costco is closer to you. Y. Hata is another place for Tri Tips. I know because I used to work there years ago.

Gary-

I'm just wondering because years ago my high school had a dance at the Hickam Officer's club and all we needed was to be on a list and have current paperwork and no waiting in line for a vistor's pass. There were other times when I went golfing on a military base and a vistor's pass was required. Hence my question. I'd hate for a long wait at pass and id to spoil any food for the bbq .

I believe that you guys might have a hard time entering the pass from schofield. There is a navy police/guard at the top. Should have made a list all visitor and get approval from security department at West Loch first. Remember LLL/ the pass is part of ammo base.

The MINI club ran the pass in January of this year - I agree with the above. Getting on the base and going through the pass are two different things. It's not a problem for those with base stickers but I believe the guard at the pass gate entrance had a list of those that had to get temporary passes. We had to get the passes prior to the day of the run.

Some notes from our run :
- There are actually quite a few cars going in both directions
- There is only one place for a photo op (a rest stop with markers)
- There is no turning around or stopping after the rest stop (coming from the Schofield side)
- There is absolutely no photo taking after the rest stop (signs everywhere with warnings)
- We were told that the word Kolekole is searched in YouTube and such so don't post "illegal" photos or vids of your activities with Kolekole Pass in the name or subject

It was a great road though! :D Stay safe and have fun folks!

each car will have to get the pass just like Pearl Harbor. I dont see it taking that long. It usually takes about 2 minutes per car to get the pass. I figure about 20 minutes or so not that Long Cal. BTW answer your cell phone I was calling you all day yesterday and even left messages.

There is no longer Navy/ police Shore Patrol ( not sure what they are called) it is a security guard company at the top, I drove up to the pass and spoke with the security guards on the driving through the pass already. As long as we are with them meaning the military personnel we can escort folks with just a day pass through the pass.

The right thing to do is to contact West Loch Security department at 471-5540 and speak with the Major of operation. Tell them you want to enter the LLL Base from the top and down towards the main gate. Ask him if you can give the sponsor's name and guest list and approximately time of arrival. Make sure all vehicle paperwork are legal. Then police don't have to make vehicle pass. Don't just believe getting into pass from schofield can get you into LLL. It's a Separate base. Schofield has contract security at gates and DOD at LLL.

Calvin called and spoke with the Major today. The Major approved for us to pass through the Navy side, He is going to alert the guards that we are coming through on Sunday he gave Cal his cell phone number and land line number just in case. We just have to have a Military person at the front with the post decal and one at the rear with a post decal and of course conduct ourselves accordingly which I know wont be a issue. Good to hear it's a go. I can't make it, got to work. If I get the field sup beat that day, I'll stop by. Remember, this might be the last cruise for Kokekole Pass. We are planning to close the pass.

We are very close to the drive so please we need firm commitments not thinking of or might go, sorry either state you are going what kind of car then go to the BBQ and put down what you will be bringing if not put down you will be chipping in for the meats.

Brenden I think two pans and some foil should do. Are there kids coming?

Yea, I know. I am going to have to replace the front bumper, driver's side fender and possibly the hood as well, so have to see how much the parts are going to cost and when Vidal, or the dealer, can get them sprayed and put on...

Hey are you okay? Sorry to hear about the car but Vidal can fix it to be as good as new. You should see the job he did on Eds car, you can't even tell it was involved in an accident, a true artist at work.

Really sorry you can't make it.

Yea, I am fine; no one was injured thank god. The collision was a pretty low speed affair; I was distracted by my passenger putting a camera in my face as I was slowing into an intersection. Well, needless to say I did not slow in time...

MRFLEX

VERY IMPORTANT: Okay we have been looking at the numbers of those who said they will be doing the drive and we need to make it a firm commitment so we will be only taking those who are going to the BBQ and bringing something.

Sorry but we need to keep things manageable and only those who have stated they are bringing something or chipping in are giving us firm commitments.

So we will be thinning out the list by Friday/Saturday of those doing the drive to only those going and contributing to the BBQ as being the ones allowed on the drive.

Apex, you can catch me at Waipio Gentry at which time I will be collecting and splitting the cost of the meat.

Ben we were projecting 1300 but with the numbers going more like 1330 to 1400 with the lean to 1400. We will need to keep tract and manage at least 15 cars.

Ok, thanks. I will most likely show up some time around then. My carrying space will be at a minimum, but I will donate some cash when I get there. Cool?
