So, many of you have heard about this stupid thing, and I posted in the E30 section, which I'm guessing only Fredk vists...

Thought I'd put it here, I know bimmergirl is out there surfing around not posting, so at least I know there is ONE person that wanted to see this!!!

And yes, as you read this you are going to think, "This kid is f'in nuts."

Wow, that is pretty involved!

It cost 5k to do both rear quarters, the floor, and overall repaint? Did you get factory quarters and inner fenders?

He had to completely rebuild both lower corners of the rear quarter as well as the floors behind the wheel where the water drains from the windshield.

Also had to put the entire back piece in. That's a weld as well. So the entire very rear of the car is welded in, the lower corners, the front, the floor. The back piece was used.

We saved the hood. Took a trunk lid from another car. Two new aftermarket fenders that didn't fit so a cut and weld onto my fenders.

The inner fenders were sandblasted and coated. Any rust he found that was non mechanical was cut out with new sheet metal welded in and shaped in its original fashion. So to answer your question, we used as much of my car as possible, got as much OEM used we could, and the rest was cut and paste from a 6 foot by 3 foot piece of sheet metal.

And then of course the repaint. I think he had like 20 hours into just the battery comparment in back as a gauge on how bad the thing was.

I was supposed to help, but was in FL and have been too busy since my return... But that's ok, I still have new suspension to put in a PS pump and I got the radio in the mail yesterday.

wow, that is dedication!

I would have scuttled the project almost immediately. Like I did with my 318is.

Exactly, frustrated that my car is not back from shop. i had to pay some one to redo my rear brake lines. The had to drop the fuel tank and it has taken them almost 2 weeks. Too long. for a few brake lines.

Oh I need them to finish as weather is here and I want to hide the M for the winter.

The hell? Why did they drop the fuel tank? I did all the rear hardlines and I didn't have to drop the tank, at least on a 318is.

I said what ever get it done. I agree you don't need to drop it but they wanted the ease of work.

Doesn't help I'm out in Cali on fire relief missions. Otherwise I would be there daily.

Yeah, that is what should have happened two years ago. But as I did one thing, something else broke, and at the time the $500 here and $1000 there was cheaper than buying a new car, so I kept on fixing. Before the body work the car had morphed from a DD to a project I fell in love with.

So I scrimped some cash and saved to put it into this car. Of course I've spent double what a MINT IX would cost, but I know what the car needs, and have myself into instead of someone else's work.

And I'm not done! I want to get a Metric Mechanics motor and new drivetrain in the coming years. By the time I'm done I'll have a brand spankin new E30 for what it would have cost in 1989!!! Oh well, I couldn't think of a better way to spend the $$.

That sucks man. I'm hoping to get this thing back in the next couple of weeks. My E46 will not drive in the snow and I'm not going to buy snows for it. I'll rent a car first.

Of course I'm selling my E36 tomorrow too. So here's hoping the E30 is done soon.

ah, I understand why they did it that way--they can avoid dropping the subframe, which could open up a huge can of worms.

It was easy for me to access everything, because the subframe had already been dropped.

Looks like some minor reassembly and you should be ready to roll again, NHskibm.

Very nice man, though you get points knocked off for the spray; Every time I see a black BMW with a nice spray job, I am reminded of how badly I need one myself. :P

Good luck with it, it should look good. My "ix" is the same color and is alittle faded so over the winter i'm going to repaint it the same color...I can't wait
