so i just got me an 03 z4 3.0i.
i have been noticing that when accelerating, once it its 3k rpms the acceleration starts to get a bit jumpy until it hits the 4k mark.

is this normal?

I have the same car as you. I have not experienced this issue (luckily) yet, however I have read a lot of threads on it. If I recall, it seems that most people were able to resolve the problem by having their ECU "flashed" at the dealership. They all seem to stutter or hesitate at the same rpms you are describing. Do a search on it and you'll come up others that had the same problem...

what do you mean by "jumpy"? Do you have the sport button, and does that make a difference?
