Take a 1996 E39 540i that comes standard with a metal sunroof.
I want to take that sunroof out and replace it with a glass moonroof/sunroof with the open/close shutter thing inside.

Can I do this? Is it possible??:help

Does anyone know the answer to this question. I have a 97 with a metal roof that I would like to swap out for the glass roof from an 01 528i

i think it prolly woul be a drag and drop because if they were differnet it would cost bmw to make the bmw's

my brothers 97 (3/96) 528 has a glass sunroof, his shutter works automaticly(no handle on it like mine) so maybe you dont have to mess with yours?

Are they the same size? What are the differences in mounting?

his is factory, looks as the same as mine except no handle on the shutter, so he cant open his shutter with the roof closed like i can

I think that they are the same size and dimensions but I was hoping someone could confirm for sure. I would assume that someone would have done this swap before.

Why do you want to do this swap? As stated, you will lose the ability to open the interior "shutter" manually. Is it an aesthetic thing?

I would rather have glass and I have all the parts available.
