all 3 of these things need to be fixed

1) valve cover gaskets are JUST starting to leak
2) power steering hoses have a slight leak...it maybe just a matter of replacing the factory clamps with some newer ones...(as its leaking right where it connects to the reservoir)
3) throttle body actuator housing caused the engine failsafe on sunday morning....

most/all of this should be covered (unsure about the hoses)

i know valve cover gaskets are a known issue with these cars....but at 36k miles? the car is 4 yrs old.

anyone ever had to replace the throttle body actuator housing themselves?? how difficult is this to do (incase warranty doesn't cover it i can go get the part and do it myself)

no :)

what causes this to fail? poor design? negligence? or is it a fact of life?

if its negligence....and i'm doing something wrong then i wanna make sure it doesn't happen again :)

I think it's just the amazing amount of heat produced by the engines... I'm always paranoid when I park because I can feel the heat off the plastic when I lift the hood.. I could fry an egg on it... though 4 years does seem a bit early...

yea it does produce a ton of heat....and car was originally bought in florida....

i've gotten in the habit of leaving the hood open after driving it for a long period to let the heat dissipate better....after i park it in my garage....it probably doesn't do much ...other than help to heat up the rooms above the garage...BUT it does make me feel better...
:dunno:

At least you don't have to see it smoking at night when the temps drop... makes the front of my car look like a smoke house... ok, so I may be exaggerating a bit.. but I still don't think I should be anle to see smoke after a drive.... :(

There's a decent DIY write-up on http://www.bmwtips.com/
Maybe that'll help, but I hear it's only like a $125.00 job for a indy...

nah i'm not messing with the diy's for now...with my wife being 8.5 months pregnant/added workload at work and some additional IT consulting i'm doing on the side...any free time i have goes to spending time with my wife....

i'll just bill this company a few extra hours to offset the cost of this work :)

easy come easy go!

1)faulty gaskets is about all i can think of, what makes you think they are leaking
2) yes the clamps go bad, you can tighten them or replace with noew ones. very simple should take few minutes
3)cant help you on that haha

just got off the phone with my indy shop

he called the extended warranty company

everything is covered

they'll take care of it tomorrow

total bill for all this would be $1500

i just have to pay the $200 deductible...:)

includes new hoses and clamps for the power steering .... as well!

bought a 5 yr 100k mile warranty for 4k with tax.....its already paid for a 1/3 of itself...cooling system will pay for a bit more :)
