View Full Version : Going in for a suspension upgrade..
colorado 10-23-2007, 12:57 PM It seems like everyone I talk to around my office could care less about my car....so I will tell you all! No pics yet...don't hate I will post soon.
I just got the call from Bimmerhaus (best indie on Colorado) that all my new parts are in :alright
I am getting Koni Sports all around, H&R Springs, Eibach Sways, Ground Control camber plates, and converting to wheel studs. And just for fun a new set of M-parallels getting anthracite powder coated.
I can't wait!
Anthony530i 10-23-2007, 01:06 PM nice cant wait to see post some pics when the job is done

rocketwagon 10-23-2007, 02:14 PM Damn, that's a badass upgrade! Much sexier than upgrading all my bushings. :(
Looking forward to seeing the pics, hopefully some before and after.
GTMAN 10-23-2007, 04:51 PM Cant wait to hear about your thoughts on the setup...looks like it will be quite a difference from stock!
supark 10-23-2007, 06:17 PM very nice! how much is the powder coat running you?

xxpanipuri 10-23-2007, 06:43 PM why did you choose this combination?

The quote I got was $75.00 per wheel...includes media blast, powder and high-end clear designed for automotive applications. The shop that is doing it does all kinds of custom motorcycle powder that is just unbelievable.

I did research here and also talked with Bimmerhaus they have a ton of track/performance daily driving experience so I value their opinion.
I really liked the adjustability of the Koni's (even though the rears are a nightmare to adjust once installed), The quality of the ground control camber plates is superb, very easy to adjust and the finish is fantastic. H&R springs seem like they offer exactly what i want in drop/performance and from what I could gather not too many people making aftermarket sways for the e39 except Eibach.
Cheers
xxpanipuri 10-24-2007, 12:32 PM how much did this setup run you if you don't mind my asking :)

I had the shop track down all the parts and they were super cool about matching prices or selling close to their cost. Once its installed, plus alignment I think the whole thing will be around 3k. Individually most prices were right about the same as online pricing the only draw back is I have to pay tax :rolleyes but it's soooo much easier to have the them get the parts then I know its right.

RobMoore 10-26-2007, 12:18 PM Perfect, a topic of interest for my first post.
I have the same problem. Nobody at work wants to talk cars (luckily they will at least talk about my other hobby, guns).
I know H&R makes a few different levels of spring (Super Sport, Sport, Race), which did you get?
I used to have Sports on my Cobra and hated them. Everyone told me I should have used "Race" ones, since they were better for the street (sounds wierd I know). Is that the case here?

Most would guess that 'race' means a fairly harsh ride due to the characteristics needed to 'feel' the track. I did a race setup on my 280ZX (Eibach Springs, KYB Struts/Shocks and poly bushings) and she rides so harsh that my motorcycle feels smooth as glass. HOWEVER, she now rides on rails compared to stock...:buttrock
I have the factory 'sport' setup on my 540 and I can feel the road but it's still a very civil DD so it all depends on what you can tolerate. BTW, I LOVE the sport setup on the 540 'cause she kicks ass when pushed and feels like a luxury sedan when cruising...a perfect balance IMO. BMW RULES!! :redspot
brandon5069 10-26-2007, 02:04 PM Cool dude, I think you have the wrong idea about higher spring rates....It's not so much about feel as it is about weight transfer and body roll...
RobMoore 10-26-2007, 02:45 PM Good to go. Like I said, the only experiance I have with H&R is what they make for Cobras. For those, the Race setup isn't overly harsh, and the drop is perfect. The sport springs for those drop too much and are too soft. I had wheel rub on every onramp, and it bottomed out constantly.
I'm looking to buy a 540 in the next couple weeks, and I know as soon as spring weather rolls in, the mod-bugs will come out of hybernation. I always get bit.

Well I can 'feel' much less body roll and weight transfer seems far better when compared with stock (280ZX) as for the 540iAs, I think she has the beefed up sway bar setup as well as the sport springs and struts/shocks. I'm coming from an '89 750iL and that was downright mushy stock. :help
Just to be sure, you are talking about how a vehicle's suspension performs when pushed hard into multiple corners and hairpins...correct? Body twisting and the like? Wasted energy that could be put down to the pavement? I still like the factory sport setup on my ride. The two things I might add would be strut braces and a f**king LSD. :alright Although I believe that after many years and hundreds of millions of deutsch (sp?) marks on R&D, BMW has accomplished a mighty task...a great balance between two totally different styles of driving in one fine luxury sedan! :redspot
:round RULES! :alrightbmw
