Can anyone recommend me a place to have dinner in San Jose for a Saturday evening? Only thing I ask is no Italian food...

Price probably won't be an issue but I'd prefer it not to be super fancy. Maybe a good sushi place? Thanks in advance.

What's wrong with Italian food? :) I love Italian food. If you'll make an exception, Maggiano's at Santana Row is some good chow, so is Straits...lemongrass steak FTW! Their lava cake (souffle) used to be really good too, but it's gotten worse over time.

How much are you looking to spend? If you want some good American-style food, I like Arcadia in San Jose, first level of the Marriot on West San Carlos; it's a Michael Mina restaurant. New York strip steak with red wine whipped butter and truffled macaroni and cheese is a must. :buttrock It's not too steep either, tab for two is usually $120'ish said and done, more if you like wine. They're never usually that full, even on Friday and Saturday nights, but I would make reservations anyway. Easy parking at the convention center garage and you can walk through the Marriot lobby. Business casual dress. They had an off-night last time I went, food wasn't up to par, so I don't know what's going on; hopefully it was just an off-night.

I don't know if you will try this or not but I figure you can save it for if you ever do...or for anyone else reading that wants to try this. If you really want to have some fun, Manresa in Los Gatos. David Kinch restaurant, try the tasting menu with wine pairing. Prepare to be blown away. It will take 3-4 hours and the tab for two will run over $300+ said and done but you will never forget it; and if your lady is into food, she will be impressed. Make reservations, fix up, and look sharp!

I've actually heard Blowfish wasn't that good...or was more expensive than what the food was worth so I'm looking to try it out to see if that's true or not.

Damn, great suggestions! I love Italian food, my gf... doesn't like tomato sauce haha. Don't ask. Oh and price won't be an issue unless it starts to reach the few hundred mark... then that's just a bit much. I like wine, but my gf isn't 21 yet so no wine :(

Ah, got it. I guess an Italian food dinner on a date can be seen as too typical by some women as well. Does she dislike Italian food in general or just tomato sauce? I guess knowing that would open up some more options in terms of places to eat.

tanto off saratoga. excellent japanese place with a sushi bar ;)

Nice one. Though this place is 100x better if you speak and read Japanese, since they have a monthly changing menu that's in Japanese. The English menu only has more pedestrian items.

That's not a sushi bar. It's a counter.

Alexander's behind Valco Mall, Sundance in Palo Alto, La fondu in Los Gatos.

Don't know, nice, yeah no. La Fondu is highly overrated.

Yes, you can always go wrong with Santana Row. If you are looking for hype and atmosphere, then you can't go wrong. Assuming you don't mind those awful people who go there.

But the food at trendy restaurants are never good for the price. If you think Blow Fish is good sushi, or Sino is good Chinese food, you need to travel the world a bit more.

Try Manresa in Los Gatos. And Tanto is excellent, just bring someone Japanese.

Great post. Tanto is already high on my list. Between the both of us we know 5 languages. Japanese not being one of them :(

what you gotta wear to this place?

Nothing too crazy, semi-formal/casual. I see people in jeans all the time, but jeans are becoming more "accepting" now.

If she doesn't like tomato sauce/tomatoes/red stuff.. they have different sauces. Pesto sauce, cheese/cream sauce, oil/vinegar, seafood sauce...you get the picture. Look at the menus online ahead of time to get a feel for it!

:buttrock Yes.

And I agree with some of the Santana Row comments. The word "facade" comes to mind too often when I'm there. It's still really nice most of the time and I enjoy it, but the food is not spectacular and there are way too many snooty people there who need to get a clue.

And the best food will always be found at the more serene, humble, modest looking spots; never in places hyped up that much with that kind of atmosphere.

Jeremy Fox (chef from Manresa) opened up a restaurant in Napa called Ubuntu. His wife's the pasty chef there, and she was the pastry chef at Manresa.

Great restaurant, although it's a big weird because it has a yoga studio above it, as part of the restaurant.

It bothers me when people talk about Santana Row restaurants like they have the best food ever created.

The seafood dishes I've had at various Italian restaurants have never really been that impressive.
