View Full Version : Bad night (WTF Falken tires?)

Well, it's one of those bad days, you know what I'm talking about, when it all hits at once.

Well, I spent the weekend in Louiville, KY for a seminar, and on the way back, I find out that I was scheduled to work that night for a third shift. So, spending 8 hours driving a colossal 15 passenger van on barely any sleep only to spend that night working instead of sleeping:mad, not fun. Well, I thought seeing my car after a long weekend would boost my spirits (and driving it after driving what seemed like a 747).

Well, I pull out of the driveway already running late, seeing as I got stuck in a traffic jam on I-65 (construction:mad) and thats when I hear that awful slapping sound. It sounded like my rear driver's side tire blew out, but the car handled nothing like it had a flat tire:confused. I pull off the road and examine the tires. Well, it wasn't a flat, but my tread had literally peeled from the tire and was flapping in the wind. WTF? I was driving perfectly normal, the only thing abnormal was that the car wasn't driven over the weekend (I had my keys with me to make sure of it:redspot)

Has anyone ever seen this happen?:help I mean, the tires are a little worn, not nearly bald enough to do this. Maybe a re-tread or something? They were from the previous owner, so I don't know much about them. All I know is that they are Falken tires. I'm too tired and lazy at the moment to provide further details (haven't slept since 3am Monday morning, and that was only around 4 or 5 hours:rolleyes)

Also, I guess this is the time for some new tires, right? Anyone have any suggestions on a good brand, looking for a good set of performance tires. The car's hibernating this winter, so I'm not interested in snow tires. I'll try to post further details on the tires when I wake up later. Goodnight guys:buttrock

Thats pretty much tire failure. By law, passenger tires can NOT be retreaded.

Many like Goodyear FS-G3's. Performance tire, corner like crazy, good price, phenomenal in the rain, good treadwear. I have them and like them. They do have soft sidewalls (nice ride), but do have a tendency to want to follow the road contour (not grooves) due to the diagonal tread pattern

Did you buy the tires new? And if yes, don't they come with a warranty? I know mine do. If you have the warranty, go to the dealer. He should replace - it's safety.... (I don't have Falken)

what model Falken? this sounds like an isolated fluke to me. possibly the tire was damaged previously and it wasn't a sudden failure.

Try to talk to a falken dealer in your area. Maybe they will take care of you. It sure sounds like a serious threat. Waht if you were doing 85MPH when tread came apart.

Tire delamination is not super uncommon (ask Ford about the Explorer tires).

Given that the tires came with the car, you might not have a warranty to back you up. It can't hurt to try though. The tire dealer, even if he doesn't give you full coverage, might help you out with a good price.

My experience with Falkens is limited, but the 452s that I put on my SVT Contour seemed awfully nice. My Bimmer came with fresh Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s, and they are excellent (except for some flat-spotting when cool), but I will likely not go with them for my next set due to cost.

Cost? Think these are about the least expensive main brand ultra performance tires you can get, that have reasonable tread life. Just my 2 cents.

FULDA! German engineered plus they stick to the road like bimmers, and they aren't ridiculously expensive (i got 275s on the back)

Thanks for the concern guys. I really am lucky this didn't happen on the highway. I tried talking to the tire places around here who sell Falkens, but they gave me the run around, as well as blaming me for this mess (go figure:rolleyes)

I got further info on this tire in question. It's a Falken P235/40 Z R18. I have these on all four wheels. Like I said before, these are the same tires that were on the car when I bought it in February. I know nothing about their previous history. The tread is still fine on them (well, at least three of them:rolleyes), but it could have been some previous damage that had caused this to happen. All I know is that I won't be putting Falkens on my car again, or any future ones at that.

Thanks for the suggestions on what next to put on, and I welcome any additional advice. But for now, I'm being called in to work another third shift again:(

When I posted the first thread, I was 3/4 asleep and was too lazy to see what they were. The tires are: Falken P235/40 Z R18

had kumho asx once. i got measly 8k (rear) and 14k (front) out of them. they get really noisy at half life.

they started out as being sticky and fun to drive at the beginning, but after 4k or so, the advanced compound is all but gone. the rest is just ordinary cheap rubber material that causes the rear end to break loose in a sharp bent, all a sudden, without any gradual warning or feedback.

junk!

there should be a model number on the sidewall as well. not just the size.

[QUOTE=Jerrysull2;The tires are: Falken P235/40 Z R18[/QUOTE]

That is the size of the tire. We want to know what other designations are on the tire besides Falken and the size. It may be a name or a model number or both.

Its important to know what the models is. Pls advise us.

Interesting. I've read quite a few stories of the tread separating on the summer Falken FK-451, but not on the all-season 512.

That is a current all season model. It must have been cut or damaged.

Well, it's a performance all-season, which means its snow performance will be mediocre at best. You need dedicated winter tires for good snow traction.

Well, I got the car right before that nasty blizzard we had here. Driving around wih those tires in snow was like roller blading on an ice rink.
