View Full Version : For anyone who is displeased concerning news coverage in SD
adept 10-23-2007, 12:45 AM I have been very angry at the fact that local news channels have simply NOT reported on any San Diego fires in my area (Norcal), especially with Fallbrook. I was concerned and so I did a lot of research.. here is what I gathered if you care:
There are two blogs that I have found where you can get the most up to date information:
http://catdirtsez.blogspot.com/
http://sosdfireblog.blogspot.com/
Most up to date map I have found... all the other new's channels websites SUCK with their maps!
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&ie=UTF8&om=1&msa=0&msid=114250687465160386813.00043d08ac31fe3357571&ll=32.990236,-116.732483&spn=1.442114,1.697388&z=9
And for people wondering about fallbrook, here is an unconfirmed map image:
http://and-still-I-persist.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/1953-map.gif
Also, you can visit cbs8's website for official info, however these maps are only updated every other hour and this can be frustrating as a lot can happen: http://cbs8.com/
Young Version 10-23-2007, 12:52 AM This is perfect...we're relatively close, and we're both checking on people in Fallbrook.
Thanks a ton for the links.
uberpanzer 10-23-2007, 12:52 AM Yup, I'm pretty pissed at them. They reported not too long ago a southern border for anevac zone as a road the runs north-south. Sorta hard for that to be a southern border. Even if you use Blvd instead of Rd, that East-West running road doesn't meet the Western or Eastern border.
Anyway, glad you found the info and are a bit more satisfied.
Young Version 10-23-2007, 12:57 AM Oh Jesus...the fire is at the intersection of Gird/Reche Rd. That's the closest intersection to my house...maybe a mile away.

My hometown is Irvine. My parents have left the house to my dad's hotel and are staying there but only because my mom is having a hard time breathing with the smoke. All of my good friends who I would call family live even closer to Santiago canyon than I do, and all of them say all is well. There is no evacuation and from what they have heard it is mostly contained. Keep in mind this is all hear-say, but from what I would call reliable sources.
EDIT:
I was able to get some more official news regarding the Santiago Canyon fire:
Orange County Fire Authority reports the Santiago Fire has burned 15,800 acres and is 30 percent contained. The fire has changed course and is moving north toward Silverado Canyon. Lake Forest, Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills are no longer in danger. But 2,000 residents in Silverado Canyon are being asked to evacuate voluntarily in the next hour. They can go the College of the Cayons in Orange or to Saddleback Church in Lake Forest. - 7:12 p.m.
Fire officials found three separate "points of origin," all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. "Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battallion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said. The fire is moving north, and the only mandatory evacuation includes six homes near the intersection of Santiago Canton Road and Hangman Tree Road. -7:21 p.m.

My GF's friends that say they watched their house go live on Secret Lake Ln. I hate to be the bearer of bad news if it does in fact turn out to be bad news. Also, keep in mind that my GF's highschool girl friends may tend to be a little more dramatic and say they watched their house go if that may or may not have happened.

If that's true, and it very well may be considering Pala Mesa Resort burned, that means the fire is closing in from both sides.
turbosporttsi 10-23-2007, 01:24 AM I have been trying to find up to date info as well. Not too much luck. The google map hasn't been updated in 4-5 hrs. the channel 8 site isn't tooo bad. The maps are updated every hour or two, but the info doesn't go more than maybe 15-20 min without being updated.
pimpstaty5y is right.... this IS gay.
ParadigmGuy 10-23-2007, 01:30 AM According to the map both my parents-in-laws house and my sister and brother in laws houses are gone. They're under the red shaded area. Anyway to get more specific info?
turbosporttsi 10-23-2007, 01:32 AM You can try this live feed: http://www.kusi.com/home/10720631.html?video=pop&t=a
Also, the channel 8 news site, http://www.cbs8.com/ has a list of known addresses that are gone. Obviously it's not complete, but it is a start.

That's the problem, at this point the last specific (official) info was a few hours ago. I'm getting all my info from bloggers. If you want very specific Fallbrook info and want to sift through tons of resident's comments... you can visit this article http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2007/10/23/news/top_stories/10_15_5567_22_07.txt and look at all of the comments that people are leaving about the area of Fallbrook.

Thanks. Although I didn't see the address of my bro and sis in law, houses all around that area are listed. There were a few within a half mile or so of my parents in law. I'll keep watching the list for updates.
adept 10-23-2007, 02:04 AM ^^^ Oh whoops were you not talking about Fallbrook?
Most recent OFFICIAL update concerning Fallbrook:
Rainbow/Fallbrook residents being evacuated--Fallbrook #1 priority for state--100 homes destroyed
UPDATE (9:50 pm)
According to John Buchanan, "Right now we don't have an accurate count of the home losses or the monetary loss. We have 2 civilian injuries and one firefighter injury." There are no reported fatalities.
According to Buchanan, the new gameplan is to contain the fire on the west side at Gird Road and keep it from jumping the road. On the south side of Fallbrook, they are trying to hold the boundary at Hwy 76.
According to Buchanan, they don't have a hope of containment until tomorrow and and that is if the weather is cooperating.
bdifc 10-23-2007, 02:14 AM My family lives in Rainbow near the Rice Canyon fire. They saw a small fire around 5am this morning in Rice Canyon. Upon calling the fire department, they were told that it wasn't a priority and it should burn its self out. Irony much?
turbosporttsi 10-23-2007, 02:46 AM That is seriously messed up.
ParadigmGuy 10-23-2007, 09:36 AM They stopped updating for RB and San Marcos. I wonder if that means that things are under control there.
turbosporttsi 10-23-2007, 09:42 AM I have noticed that as well. right now they seem to be covering Bonita, Fallbrook, and Poway area, to some extent.
