View Full Version : Help me disprove friend's "FI"
Porfeo 10-22-2007, 10:09 PM Hey everyone,
The other day my friend came up to me and told me he had created a "Forced Induction" type thing for his car. He said he took his CAI and added an 84 CFM (cubic feet per minute) fan to the tube. So basically it goes like this
K&N Filter > ABS Pipe > Fan > ABS Pipe > Motor (see diagram)
He said that although he obviously doesn't get 50+ hp, he does feel considerable performance gains. Can anyone here elaborate on why this can/can't work? Thanks
btw, here is attached diagram

The flow rate of the fan compared to the rate at which the engine is pulling the air is comparable to trying to blow a tornado away with a window fan. All he's really doing in the end is partially blocking and disrupting the path of the incoming airflow and therefore creating turbulence in the intake. If anything the air flow of the engine is actually powering the fan more than the battery.

fsmtnbiker 10-22-2007, 10:27 PM At 6500 RPM, a 3.2L engine moves approximately 300 CFM of air, assuming 80% efficiency. His fan isn't doing anything but restricting the flow.
Hopefully his fan explodes from spinning to fast and gets sucked up into the motor.

Do you have a website that tells more about how they figure this out by chance?
Oh, and any way you can get me some Rockies tickets and let me stay at your house Saturday & Sunday?

Well said
KyleAwesome 10-23-2007, 12:18 AM Tell your friend to step it up! If he ever wants real power he needs to ditch that home brew and step into something like this:

Rofl, 84 cfm is like a computer case fan!

I agree, and I hope I didn't screw the pooch on the calculations...
6500 RPM / 2 (Engine completes one cycle every 2 revs) * (3.2L) * (.035315 CF/L) * (.80 (assuming 80% cylinder fill)) = ~294 CFM
Oh, and any way you can get me some Rockies tickets and let me stay at your house Saturday & Sunday?
I'm trying to get tickets... Stupid website.
328iJunkie 10-23-2007, 04:51 AM Lol. +1 on the restrictor fan. Yeah it might flow more than the motor at idle, but even there a 10CFM difference isnt gonna create much pressure at all.

can we get the ATR (air to retard) plot on that? I'm guessing that with air being restricted to the brain from such an invention that the retardation should increase....so...causing the brain to run stupid?
Tell him that now he needs to add a boost gauge to make sure he doesn't overboost while hard on the gas.

What are you eating for lunch? I feel much more dumberer after lunch, at least for awhile. Maybe I should install an 84 cfm fan for my brain (or nitrous injection might be a laugh.)

Bigsalgt 10-23-2007, 02:44 PM This is funny! When I think of a better, more productive comment to post, i'll hit up this thread once again!
red97tj 10-23-2007, 03:13 PM he needs to get the tornado also:
http://i24.ebayimg.com/08/i/000/be/56/7d9d_1.JPG
w/ these upgrades he can take on any super cars (mclaren, ruf porsche, lambos, ferarris)...please!!!
he needs to get on the show "pinks" cause he can win lots of car there...even if he gives up half of the track, he'll still own anyone w/ these 2 mods.:alright
Black Mamba 10-23-2007, 03:26 PM Has anyone thought that the the guy who posted the question and the friend might be the same person????
He hasn't replied to any of the comments and also no PICS included....
so I think that he's using the strategy....blame the imaginary friend....instead of making a dumb question and look even dumber.
PICS or ban.

gboezio 11-08-2007, 12:35 AM Sorry to highjack this thread, but I have been thinking lately to upgrade my fan from 80 cfm to 120 cfm, but I don't know what oil to use for this power :az
Garlic 11-09-2007, 01:37 AM To the OP, I've got a deal for your friend!
http://www.birkoph.com/Wolf%20T%20Shirt%20Long%20Sleeve%20Mens-Large_files/borntoroamls.jpg
I'll sell you this for the low price of 24.99.
Ask anyone, it's a guarenteed 25hp, and you'll get so much ass that even your mother will be proud!
PM me for details.
m3j0n 11-09-2007, 02:28 AM im running this exact setup in my e46 m3 except im using a box fan. I definitely got/noticed a HUGE performance gain, but I had to install an extra battery to power the fan. Unfortunately, the extra weight slowed my car down a bit and altered the 50/50 weight balance... Now I have extra straight line power, but I totally compromised my performance in the twisties....

Jon you wouldn't need that box fan if you installed the blower in your closet.

no, silly... the twinscrew is for my e36... i have the box fan FI on my e46.:buttrock It makes far more boost than the twinscrew anyway.

Considering the Twinscrew is still in the closet, and making ZERO boost, that is probably true...
Is your kit gay?

HAHAH umm.....i dont know about its sexual orientation, but i will tell you that i still need to head down to AA to get the parts that they left out of the kit, since they wont send me the parts without seeing the kit in person :shifty... I'll definitely over around thanksgiving time, since my brother wants to have some stuff done on his e46 AA s/c'd m3. Hopefully that will give me enough time to get my clutch and flywheel installed and put on the break in miles.
wtf? :rofl
