View Full Version : New muffler on order!
tortexal 10-22-2007, 11:07 AM So while trying to fix my flex disc i had to lower the exhaust. Well the mounting bolts at the muffler totally broke while removing them preventing the stock muffler from being put back into place. So what better time to have to shell out for a new muffler.

i'll report back with how the install goes and sound clips
jhower08 10-22-2007, 12:01 PM Definately interested in how this goes.
What are your plans for tips? Just throw some seperate tips right on the outlets or run some piping then place the tips at the end? The only thing that kept me from ordering that muffler before was that I wanted to place the tips right on the outlets but figured it would look weird bc according to that picture, the outlets are kind of far apart compared to our stock mufflers.
tortexal 10-22-2007, 12:21 PM crap thats a good point.
tortexal 10-22-2007, 01:59 PM i got this one instead, im going to have to have a Y pipe made to connect it. id really rather not do that but nothing else will look right.

tfritz 10-22-2007, 02:01 PM couldn't you just put the first muffler a little further back and run two pipes off the end bringing them closer together and then put your tips on
tortexal 10-22-2007, 02:28 PM i think that might look weird. i checked youtube and a ton of people are using the above muffler. if i'm not happy with it i'll replace it with something else. there's a few 2000 and above 540s w/ this muffler actually. imo if a V8 can beathe with it my M30 should be ok... i can always cut out cats and resinators but i dont think it'll be that bad.

I had that exact muffler on my e30. It was loud. I liked it though. If you want I can post one of the vids of it that I have to get an idea of what it would sound like.
tortexal 10-22-2007, 02:57 PM Do it! :) i have the miller maf conversion so i hope it sounds pretty nasty
very interested in project. How much will this run, and what is the ease of instalation?
tortexal 10-22-2007, 04:26 PM the muffler was 160.00 shipped from summit racing its the magnaflow 14815. i dont know how much install will be as of yet but i'll keep you posted. I have to finish my flex disc install later this week and get it over to the shop. mabey by the weekend i'll have everything done, if not sometime next week... its real busy on my end recently.

wow, thats like $100 of what Magnaflow's website charges. Thanks!
zubbie 10-22-2007, 05:45 PM Here's some pics of skylinergtr's ride (530) with the same muffler and the link to the original thread

you dont have to use an aftermarket resonator with this muffler, do you?
jhower08 10-22-2007, 06:37 PM not the greatest video for an exhaust clip but its the best ive got.

zubbie 10-22-2007, 09:22 PM you dont have to use an aftermarket resonator with this muffler, do you?
I don't think so. In the pics above there is only a custom y pipe after the cats to the muffler. Don't know how loud it would be. There is a recent post with 5 different sound clips of different exhaust options. I can't find it. I have seen a setup using cherry bombs as resonators to keep the sound level down a bit......
CleanE34 10-22-2007, 09:50 PM looks good. i might do the same with my 525i. either that or dish out big bucks for a REMUS.
clevertd 10-22-2007, 10:47 PM Damn, you're gonna beat me to it! Get vids! I'm just waiting for a little bit more cash before I put on the 14815 as well. For anyone else looking, the cheapest I found was $120 shipped at http://www.performancepeddler.com/.
Hmm.. I interested.. hurry up and get it all installed. I might get a Dinan exhaust for pretty cheap, but definitely still interested in this since the dinan is used...
EDTI: I have the Miller MAF too. So a sound clip would be perfect since I wanna hear it first.
tortexal 10-23-2007, 08:52 AM I replaced the flex disc last night and finally have the car out. it definitely is faster w/ the miller maf than when it was just chipped. The muffler should be here by the end of the week. Thanks for posting the link to the cheaper website i'll have to see if summit will price match. I have to figure out when i can get it to an exhaust shop.... the weather is crappy now and i dont drive my car in the rain :)
shrike071 10-23-2007, 09:13 AM Just as an FYI - the OEM Eberspacher can be found for sub $300. IMHO - they're the best ones out there....

$120!
And the 14815 will work on stock 540's? (cant get to the car right now to messure) If so, this is absolutely going to be my next mod! I figure my mech guy will only charge around $100 for the install.
tortexal 10-23-2007, 10:39 AM the 14815 will not work on anything with out custom fabrication bc its a universal muffler

ok. Explains cheapness. The whole setup w/ custom fab would still be way cheeper than getting a Remus or something like that.
Man, this thread is giving me a chubby of anticipation...
zubbie 10-25-2007, 10:28 PM Skylinergtr has posted a sound clip of his install. Here is the link

V6 and I6 will be different...
skylinergtr 10-26-2007, 01:46 AM i warn you about the exhaust tho. maybe would be as deep and raw as mine becuase its a v8, but i just got my second police report today, and i warn you. if you live in a conservative area like i do, you may end up getting some reports too. just to let you know... this isn't fun.

i'll have sound clips at a later date. at idle it sounds like a V8
heres the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5ntmW5ZGtQ the camera doesnt pick up how deep it sounds at all. its very very deep and sounds nothing like a honda with a cannon on it
clevertd 10-29-2007, 07:52 PM Nice! Sound clips now, not later.:shifty
SC David 10-29-2007, 08:29 PM Very cool! Watch out for those Canadians though. They're within revving distance of you :icon15
skylinergtr 10-29-2007, 11:57 PM looks good:D just waiting for sound clips.
looks good:D just waiting for sound clips.
oh yea
did you have to trim away at the side of the bumper in order to get the exhaust in?
BigTed00 10-30-2007, 02:02 AM what color is that?
the amber corners look great, your car looks great
did you have to trim away at the side of the bumper in order to get the exhaust in?
+1, and is that like a huge dent in the piping?
tortexal 10-30-2007, 09:06 AM No trimming needed. i have it mounted so the tips are sticking out as far as the stock ones but it think it looks weird bc they're so big. i'll have to move it back a bit. I think it might be too loud actually. So to test i took out some female friend and they said they liked it :) i tried to make a video from in the car so you can hear how deep it is but the camera didn't even pick up the sound.
car is granite silver metallic. huge dent in the pipe where it was bent?
+1, and is that like a huge dent in the piping?
I'm wondering that as well.
steevieweevie 10-30-2007, 09:14 AM I'm wondering that as well.
Looks like crushed bent piping that you would get at any muffler shop. :) Go spend $800 at a performance shop if you want mandral bent piping.
AlmostEvil 10-30-2007, 10:24 AM in the first picture, left tube right before the Y there looks to be a dent. its probably just the camera angle or bad lighting though.
tortexal 10-30-2007, 11:24 AM i see what you're saying, i think its the angle i'll check tonight
So to test i took out some female friend and they said they liked it :)
:lol... "hey cutie... wanna go out and see how loud my pipes are?"
did she clean your pipes too? :D
tortexal 10-30-2007, 01:11 PM :lol... "hey cutie... wanna go out and see how loud my pipes are?"
did she clean your pipes too? :D
the convo was like this:
me: i think i ruined my car its too loud
her: Oh Adam thats terrible!
me: i know its crazy i cant even drive it
her: im coming over to hear it
me: no i'll go over there
while driving:
her: i forgot how hot fast cars were
me: you think its too loud (it totally is)
her: no its perfect
us: in her apt parking lot for an hr, we just talked :D
Fleksta 10-30-2007, 02:27 PM I've got the same muffler on order and was going to do the resonator delete when I get it put on. Would a 525 be as loud as the big six with that kind of setup? I'll be eagerly awaiting that sound clip :) as I'm trying to decide if a resonator delete would be too loud.
tortexal 10-30-2007, 04:45 PM well, in the day ive had it do far it seems to have quieted down a bit. my buddy siad the magnaflows will quiet down and get deeper as they break in. i just hope my performance wasnt effected by going from 2 pipes to 1. the shop said it wouldnt at all bc the stock muffler is so restrictive and the magnaflow is straight through. its just weird hearing exhaust all the time now vs hearing the engine. I'm used to hearing where peak power is based on engine noise and now hearing the exhaust throws me off.
tortexal 10-30-2007, 05:35 PM just imagine "VROOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!" :)
eightynine535 10-30-2007, 08:06 PM why did you remove the resonators?
steevieweevie 10-30-2007, 09:07 PM why did you remove the resonators?
lil mo powa!!!!
tortexal 10-30-2007, 10:10 PM i removed them for a cleaner install. and it'll be louder. tonight its a little quieter but deep. sounds good. also the car is still hauling ass so i think its just me thinking the power was gone.
eightynine535 10-31-2007, 12:25 AM no sound clip as promised?
BTW the first Muffler you had in mind could've worked too. If you used bigger tips on the exit pipes, it would make then appear closer.
tortexal 11-01-2007, 10:33 AM sorry ive been way too busy w/ work maybe friday i can a sound clip.
how much was the instal and shipping? this is so appealing....
tortexal 11-01-2007, 05:12 PM install 222 w/ tax, muffler 162 shipped, im calling summit when i get time to have them price match from the 130 advertised on another site mentioned in this thread.
http://magnaflowplanet.com/product.php?productid=6362 is 128 shipped. summit did price match and beat the price by a dollar, so i got a 25.87 credit back.... more booze for me :)
tortexal 11-04-2007, 07:34 PM heres the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7YzuqwFfk0
use some headphones or good speakers to hear it. you can tell how deep it sounds. also i have vids of stock vs miller maf vs this on my youtube.
kahluastud412 11-04-2007, 07:42 PM Ok you convinced me to get one! (dam this forum) more money out the window. Sounds really good by the way.
screwbiedoo15 11-04-2007, 07:43 PM that sounds really sick! i'm hoping the Miller MAF will make my remus a little more aggressive
tortexal 11-04-2007, 07:48 PM thanks, it sounds good but im still wondering if it screwed up my performance.... the car just responds different. i dont know if its as fast
Monastie 11-04-2007, 08:08 PM holy seks
screwbiedoo15 11-04-2007, 09:20 PM thanks, it sounds good but im still wondering if it screwed up my performance.... the car just responds different. i dont know if its as fast
So you think it was more responsive when you had the MAF and stock exhaust than it is now?
tortexal 11-05-2007, 10:18 AM actually, the more it breaks in the better it drives. last night and today its back to normal :) the car needs to be driven hard in order for it to get set into a groove, it needs to be really warmed up per se, then its totally fine.
Fleksta 11-12-2007, 06:16 PM Just had this same setup installed on my 525 today. Damn its loud! Sounds awesome when getting on the throttle. Just cruising around at about 2k-2.5k rpm though there is a deep bass droning that is kind of annoying. I hope it drops off when the muffler gets broken in. Again though, I love the sound when its revving and higher in the rpm range.
Tortexal, does your setup have that droning down in the low rpm range? I can see it getting very unbearable for longer trips.
tortexal 11-12-2007, 06:30 PM it'll quiet down in about a week. will drone a bit at low rpms but i dont do any road trips besides huge crises and w/ those we're driving pretty hard. if you like how it sounds now just wait until its broken in. it sounds much better imo
Fleksta 11-12-2007, 06:39 PM Cool, I think it will be much better if the drone just drops a notch or two, it was rattling my windows on the drive home lol.
eightynine535 11-12-2007, 07:32 PM its not that loud but sounds very nice....I might just have to consider this when i change my muffler.
I wonder how it would sound if you used the first muffler choice as a resonator................????
tortexal 11-19-2007, 05:22 PM updated vid since its been broken in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7YzuqwFfk0
