Yes, they can easily be reset. As for whether you should buy them or not: you will need the electronics too. Even then, you will only be able to partially retrofit them. Search for my name and "rollover" and you'll see some posts on the subject. Good luck.

Could I purchase them and then install on my car and wait till I find the electronics to make them work? I would like to get these and have them installed then make them work later on when I find the parts and have the money

Easy to reset, but very challenging to retrofit in a non-bar car.

Do I have to drill the mounting holes behind the seat? I dont have the back seat in and dont remember exactly what it looks like. Does anyone have any installed pics they can share? I just need to see how the bars are installed right now. If Its as easy as push the bars back down and lock them and mount them to the back seat with screws I might end up getting them

No drilling necessary for the bars. It's a straight bolt-in for the rollover bars. By the looks of your pictures- all the trimwork is there too. If you can get the seller to give you the electrical connector that plugs into each rollover cassette, that will greatly help you build the wire harness later on. Good luck.

Ok I'll post it again, since no one even trues to search:

According to BMW they can't be retrofitted.

Keep in mind you need additional wiring, rollover module/sensors etc for it to work, unless you want them for show only.

And here's some pics of where it's all located:

You can see the cassestte on one side (left)

The sensor

Another one. As you can see it's bolted against the left cassette

And the cassestte again

MParallel is certainly correct in that BMW says it can't be retrofitted. However, that does not mean that it can't be physically done. I have done all of the retrofit on my 95 325iC minus having the diagnostic system check the rollover system upon every ignition start-up.

To sum up what I have found when installing it on my car: You need both casettes, a sensor (there were 2 different sensors depending on year: one for the 94-95 and one for the 96 and later cars), and a hand-built wire harness. The cassettes and sensor are academic: they are straight bolt-in.

Making the wire harness is fairly involved but certainly doable. You must get the wire connector plugs for each rollover cassettte and the sensor itself. Leads from the wire harness go to both cassettes, the sensor, the convertible top module, power, ground, and the instrument cluster. The electrical diagrams are necessary in doing this.

Once the wire harness is hooked up, the rollover system will function physically. That is to say, the bars will definitely pop up if the sensor detects an unsafe condition. This is how far I've gotten.

What remains to be done is the diagnostic function check upon car-startup. That is to say, in a normal rollover equipped car the rollover light in the instrument cluster lights up upon start-up and then goes off after a few seconds. If the light doesn't turn-off, then the car is telling you the rollover system is malfunctioning. You don't need this for the rollover bars to pop-up... it's a diagnostic function only.

I have a good idea on how to activate this function but it requires re-coding the car. Unfortunately, I never got around to finishing this part. See this thread:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152389

To sum up: depending on how much the OP can source these parts for, it may or may not be worthwhile doing this. For me, it was worth it not only for the safety aspect but also because I like tinkering.

Regards,
Joe

Anyways I see I will need a key to reset the bars?
