View Full Version : Black headliner
mikeday1036 10-21-2007, 11:13 PM Just finished the headliner in my car. I started out just with the decklid (it turned purple and has been bothering me) while i was at it i did the headliner and the pillars. I think it looks pretty good. (i havent done the center pillars yet) i have some kinda crappy shots... I cant decide if i like the contrast of the o'shit handles or if i should dye them. What do you think?

4500 RPM 10-21-2007, 11:17 PM Looks great, but dye the panels and the B-Pillar cover.
Very nice. About to do my headliner/decklid in alcantara.
Did you take your headliner out? Any pics?
mikeday1036 10-21-2007, 11:20 PM Yea i was going to recover the b pillars i just havent gotten to it yet, ive been trying to decide what to do about the visors too.
The only pics i have right now are those, i can take more tomorrow.
I did take the headliner out too, not too bad but not fun.
moroza 10-22-2007, 12:06 AM What is that, suede?
Definitely dye/paint the visors, handles, and B-pillar.
offthewall 10-22-2007, 04:04 AM dude! i really need this too.. how hard is it to take the headliner out? what about the process of making everything flush once again?
matt535 10-22-2007, 09:57 AM definately die all remaining bits
bondheli 10-22-2007, 10:24 AM Was it hard to remove the rear deck?

It wasnt that bad getting the headliner out, it took some tetras skills to get it out the rear door but i imagined it being much worse. The only trouble i had was that the suede doesnt stretch very easily so it took some convincing to get things right.
definately die all remaining bits
I'm definatly going to. anyone know of a good dye to use?
Was it hard to remove the rear deck?
The rear deck wasnt bad at all, you have to remove the rear seats and i think the rear pillars (i had them out) then just pull and it should unclip.
530i1995 10-22-2007, 01:23 PM Did you recover or just dye ?

If you want to get rid of the visors, I'll take them (if they're tan/Natur, hard to tell from the pic). PM me if you want to sell them...
Thanks!
Jameseypoo 10-22-2007, 01:59 PM I'm kind diggin the two tone look on the inside
Looks good. LOL, the handles are funny lookin

+1
My interior is tan/parchment. Its my plan to have every thing plastic above the the wood grain black and recover/dye everything above the doors black. Creating a unique two tone
530i1995 10-22-2007, 05:19 PM Drop the two tone it looks like a bad replay of fast and furious

Yea i agree, anyone know of a good dye for that type of plastic? I'm trying to decide is i should cover the visors or just dye them. (visors look really bad in person, very very worn)
Wrap the visors, dye the handles.
WolfStrong 10-22-2007, 07:40 PM I'm liking the two tone personally! I would just dye the pillar black (but keep the seatbelt plastic white) and it would help out the looks a lot.

I like the two tone as well. Thats how my interior is. When my headliner is redone this winter it will look the same as what you have now.
J.Bimmer 10-22-2007, 11:52 PM That looks great, i've got to do mine as well.
Jameseypoo 10-23-2007, 01:50 PM Did you follow any kind of tutorial or anything when you did it? I'm getting ready to do mine and I'm trying to find the quickest way to do it right
Itsnotme1988 10-23-2007, 01:57 PM I like the two tone look! Sorta similar, but not as extreme as what I plan on doing...

I kinda just did it, i only originaly planned on recovering the rear decklid but i just got carried away from there. I had looked in to it online and found a few helpful tips but nothing huge. If you have any specific questions let me know and ill help as best i can.
clevertd 10-23-2007, 03:19 PM Where are you guys sourcing alcantara/material from, local fabric shop?
havok1129 10-23-2007, 03:23 PM looking to do the same on mine. can you post instructions on the easiest way to remove the current headliner?

I just went to jo ann fabrics and asked around. i found a black suede that i thought would be nice, you can pretty much put up anything you want for fabric.

For the headliner removal i had to...
1. remove all the pillars (they overlap the headliner)
2. remove the visor and the clip for it (held in with torqs screws)
3. unhook the dome lights and sunroof switch and remove the sunroof motor acces panel (hook the switch back up after the panel is out you need to open the sunroof)
4. peel back all 4 door seals from the top of the door frame
5. open sunroof and unclip all the clips in the little square holes visible from the top
6. slide the back (rear of car) of the headliner sideways (to left or right of car)
7. the headliner should be unhooked, now just fiddle with the seats untill you can get the headliner out the rear passenger door.

RVAE34 10-23-2007, 05:54 PM I did all my upper bits too. I dyed the visors and handles. I will post the maufacturer of the dye in a bit. Great stuff, but pretty expensive. I love the all black interior. Best upgrade yet!!!
