Well, good luck to ya...

I know for me, I'd rather drive 1/2 as much in my vert or pay twice as much for gas than have to drive a beatle... But to each his own.

that's one thing I've LOVED about the E36 Vert... There are a LOT of verts out there that are "feminine". The old Rabbit convertibles to Cabriolets to Golf convertibles. The Miata for sure. Even (and some people won't like me for this) the Z3 roadster is percieved as much more of a feminine car than the E36. Z4... Less femimine, but still more than a 3-series. I couldn't drive a beatle (hard top or vert). I know I'd get piles of crap for driving another one of the vehicles that has a tendency to be viewed as a chick car.

Now, I'm sure I offended ya, but oh well. just got me thinkin' about why I'm phenominally happy with my E36 Vert. It's one of the perfect cars out there for me. :buttrock

LOL I actually thought that same thing...

"he went from an E36 convertible to a chick car?!?" Everyone has their preferences I guess but gas mileage is not enough of a motivator to get me into a bug. :)

My daughter wants one as her first car because they are "cute" (she's 12).

If you commute 100+ miles a day, and when gasoline prices hit $3.50+ a gallon soon, let's see what's more funny, 24-29 MPG or 45-60 MPG!

BTW, I owned a Jetta (3x), Golf (1x), and Passat (1x) so there you go. Anyway, we all have preferences, and Bimmer is definitely not the one as I found out this time around (too many issues with E36). I guess you could call me a VW lover! I guess I'll be seeing you driving around in a E36 a little longer until who knows what!

I loved the VERT as I opened up on I-95S going 100-110 MPH! Excellent ride. But for some reason, it gets a little nervous, I think maybe because it's flexing. I would definitely be interested in the Coupe though when I am making $200K plus and get it as a toy car. But for now, I need a good reliable, fun to drive, and good gas mileage car, case closed.

*lol*

My E36 Cabrio IS my economical car! Only cost me $7k. And it gets mid to upper 20's; which is night and day better than my 12 mpg Jeep!

But I'm going to see the world a little differently when I live 8 miles from my work. My 16 mile roundtrip commute (which is all freeway except 1 mile) @ 25 mpg = .64 gallons of gas. I guess if you wanted to have the same fuel consumption as me, but have 100 miles to drive vs. my 16; you'd have to be driving something that gets 156 mpg.

So, the solution is easy! Move closer to work. *evil laugh*

I know, I know... Easier said than done, right? I have to imagine that the Portland/Vancouver area of the Pacific NW is quite a bit different as far as finding a reasonable subburban house near work than Jersey. (and all I can do is imagine, because I've never been anywhere close to Jersey)

Too bad that we don't get all the different engines that Europe gets... Then we'd all have a bit more selection.

I am not one to lable cars a "chick cars". I think that is just individul perception. I have owned 10 Miatas and certanly don't see them the way everyone else does (as girlie-cars). I also don't see the Z3 as such (I owned one of those too). Ok, the VW Cabriolet I'll give you as being kinda a chick thing. I do see the Beetle as being a "Cute Little Car" but I still like it none-the less and see it's merits. I personally don't think I could ditch my E36 Cabrio for a Beetle but if it makes you happy I think it's great! I really hope you enjoy the new Beetle and hope it gives you some grins while commuting.

I think the whole "chick car" thing is...how do I put this tactfully...STUPID! I haven't yet owned a supposed "chick car", but I'd have no trouble picking up a Miata if I wanted an economical and fun 2-seater. I'd say you have to be a bit insecure in your manhood to even think about such things. Just sayin'.

Sounds like the Beetle fits your needs well. Have fun!

Given your commute, I understand and would have done the same. Enjoy the Beetle, and if you ever buy another BMW 'vert, we'll still be here!

i have always thought that pretty much all convertibles are 'chick-cars' - some are just more masculine than others. that was part of the reason i had to have my car black on black on black with a manual transmission - i think its the least girly form of e36 convertible.

a 100+ mile commute is tough, i would want the most economical car possible too. :eyecrazy

 for not getting a stupid hybrid.

i went to a cook off with a bunch of rednecks and they were saying stuff like please tell me thats your wifes car. they thought it was girly.

right when the new bugs came out my buddys mom bought a banana yellow one and he picked me up in it. and we were at an intersection and a van full of people were pointing and laughing at us. i felt i should be giving some dude a hand job. it was terrible. havent ridden in one since.
