Hi all, i recently bought myself a "bargain" 850. It's got lots wrong with it but it's my baby now and i'm making it great again. The thing that's worrying me most is the terrible fuel consumption. I haven't taken it on any long runs yet, but with normal driving (not in town) i'm getting 14mpg (UK gallons, so that's closer to 12mpg US). Is that right? I wasn't expecting a Prius but 14mpg has taken me by surprise. Is there anything that i can do? or am i going to have to get used to it.

well i get 15mpg...in my 530i which has a 3.0 litre v8 so id say 12mpg on a 5.0litre v12 isnt that bad

I just got my 850i, and on my first tank i got 12 mpg english so closer to 10 mpg US. However, i was really hard on it for a good part of that tank. I was impressed that i got that type of mileage. I would think you should get closer to 16 just babying it in the city, but that would be max. Highway should be above 20 forsure, if its anything like the V8's i have.

Try new spark plugs, new O2 sensors, etc... Your mileage will improve.

my average is 20 l / 100 km, 50:50 city:open roads. I was staring at the OBC with the same disgust at first, but than realized that its easier to turn the outside temperature on because is its almost always lower than consumption. lol

in high gears, high speed, low rpm you'll get optimum performance. around 3k rpm in 6th gear, the car cruises around 80mph and that gives around 22mpg (UK). This is a 5.6l engine though so I guess you'll get some better economy with urs.

I've seen mine go as low as 5mpg!! but that's as soon as I reset the mpg counter, and get out of the station then floor it! :)

if it's just the OBC figures scaring you - this can be corrected to the value you like :):):)
I bet the pros here know how it works (hidden functions).

That is a little high probably because your's is twin turbo-charged. My 750 gets 14 city and 21 highway (the twin turbo 750s get 25 easy though) when I don't step into it much, which is what I would expect the normal 850 to get. But watch how low you can go when you leave the gas station after reseting your OBD gas mileage read out because mine once said 1 MPG!

Or I can watch the fuel guage drop when under boost...........if I am in boost a lot it gets pretty drastic.....

What as you floor it the gauge slowly drops down to the left?:buttrock

Seems normal to me. I have a 750iL and I got an average of just over 17mpg (US) on my last long trip from Philadelphia down to D.C.

At least the people at the gas station will get to know you by name!

My old E32 V12 got similar mileage in the city.

Either your car runs too rich or you drive to fast and hard because mine goes from D.C. to Columbus, Ohio, on one tank.

How many miles is that? I got to D.C. and back on one tank including some time spent going very slow in city traffic and highway traffic jams. About 350 miles for my trip.

Almost 400 miles while doing 80 MPH as much as possible and making three stops.

I get about 375 on the fwy for trips. I guess I'm averaging 80mph.

That's ok then, I think I could have managed that if it hadn't been for the hold ups. Thanks for the info.
