I wouldn't waste the money on a chip. I've driven many chipped vs. non-chipped m30 powered cars and could not tell any difference.

this means that all the guys discussing the chip issue in this thread (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=826154) are telling BS?
Sorry, but I entirely disagree with what you're saying.

On an auto 635csi? No difference.

To debate this any further, you will need to provide before and after dyno graphs with nothing being done to the car except swapping out the chip. Have you ever seen any of the chip manufacturers post this info? No!;)

and right around 2000-2500, where it's needed.

Dyno graphs are not the be-all and end-all of performance evaluation:rolleyes. An experienced driver will be able to discern qualitative differences in his/her vehicles behaviour, although not a quantitative one, perhaps.

So yes, buy the chip (our forum friend Wolf, aka Wokke sells good ones in my experience) it is worth it.:redspot

Ahhh yes, the butt dyno. Most people dont get their cars dyno tested after a chip only. Sometimes people do it because they can expect a better running car afterwards. I thought that most chips just change the rev limiter so redline is higher. But also, it could change what kind of fuel/air ratios are accepted too? I dont understand how else a chip company can claim 15 to 20 horsepower increases?

Does the 88 need some more speed then? The auto doesnt help im sure, but depending on the purpose of the vehicle, auto may be preferred. If the car needs a tune up, do that first, you may notice a difference, also, a valve adjustment can help response. New plugs, wires, fuel filter, valve job, and fuel injector cleaning can go a long way on these cars. Especially if it hasnt been done for a while. It will also keep the car going a lot longer.

Although, like most on this board, I am not highly qualified on the subject, I am experienced with several chips and simple mods. The biggest thing a chip will do is allow more aggressive timing, allowing you to run higher octane gas, that in itself is a gain. You may not see hp, but should see some increase in torque. Most factory cars don't require 92 or 93 octane gas, and I believe your engine may not have a knock sensor, which would retard aggressive timing, common in all new vehicles. Now, from experience: In my M6 modest improvement off of JC chip. $250. However, want a better mod, that you'll feel in an automatic? Go to Miller performance autos. Install their MAF sensor and chip. You will get improved throttle response (desperately needed, my wife has same car as yours as her toy and that is my next mod) and if chip set for 94 octance, and you run some octane boost, you will DEFINATELY get some additional performance, more torque, maybe some hp as well. I went back to stock chip after selling the JC chip while waiting for my Miller MAF to come in, installed the Miller MAF and their chip and only other slight mod was high flow cats and but dyno says, huge torque and hp gain. Pulls amazingly quicker to higher revs. Had considered installing headers I have and will now likely pass. I was incredibly impressed. Oh, and I wouldn't buy a copy off ebay. If its a defect and messes up your engine, you are screwed...ie fries your ecu, cause a short, etc.

there's nothing wrong with buying chips from ebay, but make sure it is a reputable seller and not just someone who thinks he found a new business by knocking off someone else's chip.
