wokke 10-17-2007, 01:55 AM if the locks on the car have never been replaced any BMW dealer should be able to get you a key. I once locked my key in the trunk with no access to my spare key (business trip). The only problem was, that my locks are NOT original anymore (as I found out when I got the key from the local BMW dealer).
But don't blame the key if you've been too lazy to get yourself a spare one. And breaking such a key in the door handle lock requires quite some lack of sensitivity - it's just a key, not a screwdriver. Try W40 next time you come up against a frozen lock mechanism.

not a big deal, and since you own a vintage 6, the experience will be fun because i bet the parts guys talk about it with you ( i drove my other 6 that day).
oh, an why i quoted you you ask?
because your 6 is H - O - T

alpinacsi 10-17-2007, 08:59 AM Having a copy made of an old worn out key would not have been best anyway. If you have a new key made from your VIN or key code, you will be amazed how different if appears from the old one you have been using. Also, the keys cut at your local store will not be the quality of materials that the original is. They will be plated brass which is soft and more prone to breakage expecially to the way some BMW keys are cut. I have never broken a BMW factory key.
To get a key from the dealer you will need the title or registration and drivers license/photo ID. After you get the key and find that it works, you can have a set made like the original with the lighted key if desired. It seems that the factory key is somewhere around $8-10.
Lsixer 10-17-2007, 10:17 AM Interesting topic. Question for all of you including the OP (sorry about your problem). My door locks have ALWAYS been very stiff, to the point where it feels as if even a careful turning, enough pressure, but, not too much, might break the key. I then discovered the trunk lock/unlock function (duh!). Now, I never stick my keys in the door handles, I always engage, dis-engage the locks via the trunk.
Anyone else experience this?
jbd5015 10-17-2007, 10:19 AM Some people have that problem, my guess is that the locks need a good cleaning/lubrication, and ive also heard that a factory key that is being discussed here makes a difference. A fresh key will push the tumblers into the correct position better than an old worn key.

When I had a new key made at the dealer, the lockes worked much better and the dead bolt function on the door lock would again work.
jbd5015 10-17-2007, 10:58 AM Adding it to the 'list' haha. :(
-Jeff
detroit635csi 10-17-2007, 12:07 PM i have huge guns... ;) thats why the key broke
called the bmw dealer...service guy had no idea wtf to say to me lol he's supposed to call me back...they are the original locks....im not too worried anymore....just need to find a compotent bmw dealer...i'll keep you guys updated...
anyone know where the key code is..?? i cant get in the car so yeah...umm...i have the vin though....that should be enough i think....well as well as the title and what not..
jbd5015 10-17-2007, 12:09 PM Yea, if you have the title that should be good. But you may also need current registration. Hope you have a copy that isnt in the glovebox?
-Jeff
detroit635csi 10-17-2007, 12:16 PM haha yes registration is in the glove box lol
anyhow...i believe it goes like this....i go to the dealer with title id and whatever then give them the vin, they give me the key code and a blank key...then i go to a lock smith or have the dealer "code cut" a new key for me...actually i think im going to make more than one key so i dont look like such a jackass next time haha
alpinacsi 10-17-2007, 01:23 PM It should go like this:
present proper papers to parts guy,
get lecture about how the locks may have been changed and they can not guarantee the replacement will work
pay for replacement
dealer will submit request to BMWNA
replacement key will go to dealer in a few days and you will have to pick it up at the dealer.
You will get a finished key and the code # for future reference.
You might want to hit the edges of the new key with a wire brush to remove any burrs.
dm635 10-17-2007, 04:18 PM Son recently needed a key for his 86. Went to dealer(parts counter) with documentation and I.D. Got the key in a couple days.
My dealer also doesn't cut replacement keys, but at the Indy dealer I had a copy made from mine. Still need to get one that's fresh cut from the VIN.

Hi jeepman2,
check out this (http://www.aaa-car-imports.com/BMW-E24-M635CSI/Restauration/Endergebnis/page_01.htm) and if you're shock proof here the restoration story (http://www.aaa-car-imports.com/BMW-E24-M635CSI/Restauration/Bilder-des-Grauens/page_01.htm)
Cheers

You can get the key from your dealer, they needed registation and my license "Washington" cost me about 12.00 but that was just the key, they charge another 30.00 for the lighted pod it sits in :mad about 1 week out of New Jersey.
detroit635csi 10-20-2007, 01:48 AM got 2 new keys from dealer overnighted....problem solved...well aside from gettting the broken key out of the handle...thats for another day
wokke 10-20-2007, 03:30 AM got 2 new keys from dealer overnighted....problem solved...well aside from gettting the broken key out of the handle...thats for another day
this will be fun, especially if you need to take out the door handle. Have a digital camera on site to document the different steps. This is what I always do when disassembling something complicated.
scottye36 10-20-2007, 03:44 AM lets us know what it cost you
detroit635csi 10-20-2007, 10:52 PM keys? 20 each overnighted to the dealer....but i get an employee discount so it was 18 bucks....total....oposed to 40...dealer mark ups blow thank god i work for one

Driver's door handle is one of the first things on my list to replace.
When I start getting into it, I'll do my best to take pics too.

My door handle is busted where I inserted a jagged green line

Handle still works, but it rubs the upper cover of the doorhandle.
Trying not to hijack the thread, but figured it was semi related :dunno
detroit635csi 10-21-2007, 05:04 AM i love small jobs that are super complicated hahaha ohh i cannot wait
dm635 10-21-2007, 07:51 AM This is not a fun job and easy to get frustated. Make sure you lube up anything that moves while you're in there.
detroit635csi 10-21-2007, 12:53 PM i always lube up when im in there....uhhh
heh

I believe it was only about $12 when son got his key. They called to say over 300 keys were on back order and they ordered a valet key for free. The original key came next day. Only problem is dealer is about a 50 mile round trip.

I seem to have lost my spare key to the E36 :mad
Key looks like its laser cut and doubt I can have a copy made locally.. heard it has to be done in NJ for about $50+
Thankfully these e24's are standard cuts and can be copied at most local key places.
detroit635csi 10-22-2007, 10:51 PM yeah i had to get the code tho...i couldnt just make copy...my only copy was broken! :( maybe our dealer just has stupid markups...i wouldnt doubt it....those cheap motherf....anyways thats another story....getting ready to take the door apart once it snows....will keep you all updated...
dm635 10-22-2007, 11:58 PM This wasn't for a copy. This was BMW presenting a brand new, fresh cut key using only the VIN #. Son had somehow locked the key in the car. The key however, was nearly sheared off and I suggested that he not try to lock/unlock with it after we got the door open, before the replacement arrived.
When I purchased my 6, the drivers door and the trunk both had keys broken off and jammed into the tumblers. To my surprise, when I got them both out neither one was even the correct cut. All I can think of is someone had intentionally broke them off. I had to get new used tumblers and re-key them myself. Talk about fun.
detroit635csi 10-23-2007, 11:14 AM so have you had the door handle apart and off before?
detroit635csi 10-23-2007, 11:15 AM everyone like my new sig? haha
alpinacsi 10-23-2007, 11:57 AM everyone like my new sig? haha
Ok but I have a few questions:
What is a short ram intake?
Are you sure you want to use a 300 degree cam? Or is this the Korman regrind?
Are you using a programmable injection system?
Titanium retainers and what else?
Nice Picture!!!:D
detroit635csi 10-23-2007, 12:34 PM just removed the factory airbox, had a custom pipe and heat shield made, with a high flow k/n cone filter mounted almost right behind headlight, made the engine notieably louder and increased throttle response a bit, retainers and valve springs...rocker arms also, thinking about getting the korman regrind, or possibly a 294 degree cam from this other company i can think of off the top of my head, just looking for something a little bit more aggressive than the schrick 284 i think....
the only bad thing about the intake is that it doesnt like heavy rain much, but i dont drive it in the rain anyhow...
detroit635csi 10-23-2007, 12:37 PM also planning on getting the head shaved to boost compression a little bit, but im not sure of the specific measurements and whatnot at the moment....i was actally wondering if anyone on here had that done. i have also heard about just shaving the gasket but i was also told to not do this because you wouldnt want to reduce the integrity of the gasket.... anyone know anymore on this subject?
detroit635csi 10-23-2007, 12:38 PM just trying to keep it N/A to true bmw form i guess..(well aside from the alpinas)
alpinacsi 10-23-2007, 01:22 PM Be careful where you spend your money. The titanium components will really only benefit in the high sustained RPMs. They add significant cost but not necessarily performance gains for street operation. I use the Ti components for my boat motors but they are running under constant load at high RPM (imagine driving uphill at 5000 rpm for an hour...that is what some of the boat motors can be subjected to). If you think that you may ever go FI, then you might want to consider what will help with that later. Head work can get very expensive and it may not cost much more to go to FI where the gains are very noticeable. I have not priced any of the turbo kits in several years but I would still think the hp per $ increase would be much better with FI.
Todd
detroit635csi 10-23-2007, 05:16 PM it will be over 4k to get a turbo in my car...
around 2 to keep it n/a
dm635 10-24-2007, 10:59 PM so have you had the door handle apart and off before?
yes. this job is not for the faint of heart. i would also recommend that you have a spare one at the same time you are working on the original. you may need parts or just one to reference while the other is in many pieces. also plan on a few hours if you've never done it. the way i type it would take hours just to advise.
it can(and has) be done.

JoeFab 10-25-2007, 08:10 AM Most locksmiths have a special lubricant for locks that is graphite based. This is supposed to prevent dirt from accumulating in the mechanism as is likely when using oil or WD-40.
sbinplano 10-30-2007, 10:33 PM A long time ago I had a 79 6er. Someone walked off with my jacket that had my car keys in the pocket. I called a mobile locksmith and he got the key code off the trunk lock and ground me a new key in the back of his van. This was before the chipped keys though and I don't know if that is still possible. Good luck
