View Full Version : Convince me.
Razza Nuova 10-16-2007, 07:21 PM Well, my current daily driver is a 2008 Audi A6. But I'm really thinking about picking up a slightly used 645 coupe, ideally with a 6MT. I'm assuming the majority of the posters in this forum are 6 Series drivers so if you could give me all the highs, as well as the lows of your cars I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Vinny

If you also search on this forum for E63's or newer 6ers, youll probably find a good amount of info about the new ones from a poster "gbelton". He is our 6er thread E63/E64 guru.

I think your best bet is to go drive one. Then park your A6 next to the 645 and if you don't keep glancing back at the 645 with a smile, then you'll have your answer...

Vinny,
Welcome to the 6er sub-forum.
So you have a A6, that's nice my friend.

How do you like it? Do you have the 3.1 or 4.2 litre engine with or without Tiptronic? Tell us a little bit about your A6 and experience.;)
Now, to your answer your question... BUT it is hard to tell you why you should when we know nothing about why you are looking at the 6er and what you look for in a car. e.g. status symbol, driving spiritedly, etc...
:help us :help you.:)
Highs:
Great daily driver. I drive my 650i year around.
Manual or Automatic tranny is smooth and responsive to the throttle push.
Gas mileage is premium both in city & highway (18-19c & 22-24h).
Properly optioned, the seating will provide great comfort.
Maintenance program only BMW offers (They pay for everything), you just drive it!:buttrock
Very fast for a small GT
Beautiful design (Subjective)
Lows:
If you are 6'2" or taller, the 645/650 is not for you.
If you require lots of horse power get a 650 (360HP 360ft./lb of torque) vs. 325HP 330ft./lb of torque for the 645.
If you want a super soft ride change the RFT to normal radials.
Depending on the build date you may not have BT or iPod capabilities.
iDrive can be intimidating if you do not spend a few hours with it.
You'll need to make sure the car has all the proper software updates before you buy it. (Brief you on that one once you get a little closer).
You can reasonably fit 4 but I recommend you stick with 2 if you're 5'11" or taller.
I can provide you more details based on your feedback.
Give us some details on the car your looking at and I can advise further.

Thanks, that first guy wasn't kidding, that was a great post. Anyway, I have the 3.2 liter V6, with the tiptronic transmission. I just keep it in auto though, it'll never have the feel of a stick shift so I don't care much for it, although it does have its uses. So far I love the car, the Audi navigation system is far better than that in my step mothers BMW and fathers Mercedes, it is incrediblely comfortable and the car was very well executed, however it just feels as though something is missing and I can't really place my finger on what it is.
The reason I'm looking at the 6 Series is because 1) I've always has a place in my heart for BMW, 2) it is beautiful and 3) I really have no need for 4 doors. I really don't care about a status symbol, I'm comfortable enough with myself that it doesn't matter if I drive a 645 or a 1996 Hyundai. I'd like the driving to be a little more spirited than my car is now, but if that was all I was looking for I'd pick up an M3 and call it a day, I do want something alittle more refined if you know what I mean.
The highs are all sounding pretty damn good to me, and the fact that it is beautiful is not subjective, it is fact my friend. Also, the only thing that bothers me is that it is RWD. It isn't a big deal but we do get snow in New York and I wouldn't be driving the 645 like I'd be driving my AWD Audi on those days, I suppose if my whole family can make it I can too though. As for the lows, I'm around 5'11" so height is not a problem. I don't need gobs of power, I had a built Fox body Mustang when I was 16 so I got it out of my system already, I don't want the ride to be too soft so I doubt I'll change that, my iPod hates me anyway so I don't care, Jesus Christ you're not kidding about iDrive. I wouldn't put people in the back unless I absolutely had to, no need for me to dirty up such a nice car.

i'm surprised your getting rid of an '08 audi so soon! but i do see your point, being a VW/Audi owner myself, i love them very much but BMWs are a bit more of a drivers car. i think you would be very happy with a 645/650 ci -- if your worried about winter though, why don't you go ahead and get your 6, and then just pick up a used A4 quattro as your all-weather driver? a nicely maintained A4 can be had for 10 grand these days easily.
gbelton 10-17-2007, 09:37 AM however it just feels as though something is missing and I can't really place my finger on what it is.
It just that. You have the feeling that the designers have taken all of the best and worst made them somewhat harmonious and left out that one element we all love about cars... What is that you ask? Well I think it is 'Soul'.
Car ownership, especially now-a-days is an emotional experience. When we say BMW is more of a drivers car, I think we are saying many things... IMO.
a. We're saying, I like or love the smell of the car.
b. We say, this car is so responsive to my every request (Steering, throttle, etc...)
c. We say, the design of this car is beautiful; its lines on the bonnet, its sleek low slung door panels, etc...)
d. We say, I love the way the car feels when I drive it on the road (Sensory-feedback). Lets you know you're alive, the car and you are one...
Sure there are more but I just share with you a few...;) And of course IMO.
The reason I'm looking at the 6 Series is because 1) I've always has a place in my heart for BMW,
Good reason. Many of us share this same feeling.
2) it is beautiful and
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!:buttrock
I really don't care about a status symbol, I'm comfortable enough with myself that it doesn't matter if I drive a 645 or a 1996 Hyundai.
The guys in this sub-forum will really appreciate this statement!
I'd like the driving to be a little more spirited than my car is now, but if that was all I was looking for I'd pick up an M3 and call it a day, I do want something alittle more refined if you know what I mean.
You have come to the right place and considering the right model for Spirited drive-ability and Refinement so that you may enjoy both the pleasures we 6 Series Owners have come to know and love.
The highs are all sounding pretty damn good to me, and the fact that it is beautiful is not subjective, it is fact my friend.:D
Also, the only thing that bothers me is that it is RWD. It isn't a big deal but we do get snow in New York and I wouldn't be driving the 645 like I'd be driving my AWD Audi on those days,
Ah, very good concern. I sometime take that for granted. I live in NJ and have a place in Upstate NY, so I understand your concerns. First, I do not drive my 650 without snow tires. I change from the Ultra Summers in the fall and I never (Maybe a few times) drive my 650 in any snow covered streets greater than 1'. It can be quite slippery but with snows and experience in driving these wonderful cars year around, I know how to handle them but it is the other cars you really need to watch out for; THEY ARE MANIACS on the road-sort of SuperMenWomen of some sort...:rolleyes
If you must drive, drive with snows and you can also turn off the DSC to allow better traction.
I don't want the ride to be too soft so I doubt I'll change that
You will be very satisfied having a better understanding where you're coming from and needs for today. Of course test drive it as e24mpwr stated. Let me recommend you do a few more things to either seal or end the deal!
Tell the sales guy to leave you alone in the car for a while (30-45-60) minutes. Before you get this guy telling all the wonderful things about the car etc... Give yourself some me time with the 645Ci. Drive it slow. Listen the the music (Your favorite station) or bring a favorite CD. Drive it with the window down. Check out all the buttons, locations, accessibility, ease and comfort. Play/learn iDrive, it's really easy but you have to put some time in to understand BMWs logic. Use the AC and Heat to make sure you like what coming at ya...:lol Get to know it (A little) like you will own it forever.
Now that was just a few things to consider and if you are still aligned with the stars (Ready to buy), then ask the sales guy to come join you now and confirm everything you now know about the car...
Hope this helps.

Razza Nuova 10-17-2007, 10:32 AM PRJCTGRMN- Honestly, I didn't think I'd look to get rid of it so quickly. I like it, alot, but I don't feel like the car suits me very well. I'm a young guy, not even out of college yet and the A6 just seems like something my mother would drive. I don't think I'd look to jump ship on Audi if I picked up an S4 like I had originally planned but at the time of purchase I got a great deal on the A6 so I went with it. Now as for a winter car, I don't think I'd spend $10,000 on an A4 that I'd be driving maybe 10-15 days per year. I'd probably get a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 I6 just to get me through the days driving the 6 wouldn't make sense, that and they can be picked up for like $1,500.
GBelton - You did a great job summing that up. To be truthful, I feel disconnected from the Audi when driving and I've never felt that way in a BMW, not even my fathers old 7 Series and that thing was a boat. Also, the reason I keep turning to the 645 is because there is that fine blend of refinement yet the nice feeling that the car can perform when asked. Regarding the issue of driving in snow, I know it can be done, I managed it in a 450RWHP Mustang that was lighter in the ass than the 645 would be, it just isn't high up on my list of things to do. If I did have the 6 Series as my only car I'd pick up a set of winter wheels and tires immediately and even then it wouldn't be likely I'd drive in more than an inch of snow anyway. I think I'm going to have to go sometime this weekend to test drive one for myself, hopefully the salesmen won't give me a hard time this time around. Getting my Audi was a nightmare, nobody would talk to me because of my age despite the fact that I was ready to drive one home.
JCHenryAIA 10-19-2007, 08:53 AM I've had several Audis from the 5000s to A8s. Nothing in between. I had an 01 A8L that was absolutely gorgeous. Silver on black. Ran faster than the 740il I have. Very very nice interior and comfortable drive. It was painful to sell but it lacked that something extra that BMW and Mercedes have: character. Audi, like Lexus essentially incorporates features from other makes and sort of ends up with a neutral car. I don't know about the newer models at all, (I test drove an 03 A8L and it felt like plastic) but I ended up buying two 98 750ils. I still wish I had kept the Audi though. It just seemed perfect. But I rarely miss it.
Razza Nuova 10-21-2007, 10:41 PM Well, I'm test driving a 645 this week. I'm looking forward to it.

gbelton 10-22-2007, 03:11 PM Can't wait to hear your feedback.
Razza Nuova 10-30-2007, 11:20 AM Well, just an update. I drove a 645 yesterday and loved it. The miles were higher than what I wanted so I'm looking for other 645s but I pretty much convinced myself that I need this car.
Just to add, We recently grabbed a 650, and it's absolutely a blast to drive. Not quite the perfect driver's car.... but damn nice.
gbelton 10-31-2007, 08:51 AM Got any pics? And why do you say it's not quite the drivers car as compared to?? I do not believe there are any other GT's in BMWs line-up, yet... Care to elaborate and oh, don't forget the pics.;)

I don't know, its just too.... great. I'll take a turn at 80mph and it feels like I just glided through; I didn't feel connected. I guess it just caught me off gaurd. Don't get me wrong, its a beautiful car.... I just wasn't ready for it.
You've seen the pics already.
